Young Farmer Sowing Seed Across a Ploughed Fieldby emmanuel_higgins

Ecclesiastes 11:4

He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap.

To observe the wind and to regard the clouds is to watch for ideal conditions, to hold back until conditions are perfect. Such watching keeps a person from sowing and from reaping, because waiting for circumstances to be just right prevents useful work. The verse therefore warns against delay and hesitation, against letting uncertainty or circumstances stop work. It calls instead for determined effort rather than allowing uncertainty or circumstances to prevent useful work. This waiting is exposed as indolence, and what is required is persevering effort that uses the abilities God has given.
