Ecclesiastes 12:11

The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.

Wise words prod and urge people toward the right course like goads, and hold firm with lasting support like nails securely driven, coming from one Shepherd and set before the people by teachers to warn and instruct. The saying stands within the wise preacher's upright and true teaching of knowledge that warns against endless making of books and wearisome study and ends in fearing God and keeping His commandments because God will bring every work with every secret thing into judgment, given after Solomon's own failure and repentance to warn later generations. Essential truth made plain point by point, slowly and distinctly and in small amounts people can grasp, takes hold like a nail in a sure place so they understand, follow, and retain it without confusion or weariness. A timely word for one needing help and guidance can be fixed in the mind by the Holy Spirit to lead toward Christ and shape destiny, so it should be spoken and worked for while opportunity lasts, with heavenly cooperation, since words and conduct leave lasting impressions for good or evil. Truth becomes firmly established when received in practice and felt in the heart, and when taught to children with simplicity as in parables and lessons from nature it remains, while God as Master of assemblies calls workers into united line and worship into solemn awe as in His visible presence.

Words and Their Setting

The words of the wise act like goads that prod and urge people toward the right course, and like firmly driven nails that give lasting, secure support and hold firm. Those stirring and steadying words come from one Shepherd, and were gathered and arranged for the people by teachers to admonish and instruct. The saying belongs to the wise preacher's teaching of knowledge in acceptable, upright and true words, leading to warning against endless making of books and wearisome study, and to the conclusion of the whole matter to fear God and keep His commandments because God will bring every work into judgment with every secret thing whether good or evil. The teaching was given after Solomon's own failure and repentance, to warn later generations and call them to heed instruction. The Master of assemblies is God, so worship should be conducted with solemnity and awe as if He were visibly present.

Teaching That Fastens Truth

Clearly spoken, essential truths taught point by point and with care take hold firmly like a securely fixed nail, so that people can understand and follow them. When Bible truth is made plain through teaching so that people can understand, grasp and accept it, it becomes firmly fixed in their minds like a nail fastened in a sure place. Essential truths set by the Master of assemblies are to be given point by point, slowly and distinctly and in amounts people can understand and benefit from, which helps them grasp and retain the message rather than becoming confused or weary. Giving only a few essential points at one time, slowly and distinctly and within the hearers' grasp, fastens truth firmly like a nail, and this means the preacher must carry the understanding and sympathies of the people, not soar too high where they cannot follow. He is not to overwhelm them at first with strong truth involving great change, but to deal it out judiciously and stop when they have as much as they can comprehend and profit by, so they digest it, remain eager for more, and interest is sustained.

Bible truth becomes firmly established in new believers when they receive it in practice and experience its power in their hearts. Truth taught to children can be fastened firmly in their minds like a nail in a sure place. Truth taught to little children in special children's meetings at camp meeting by kindergarten methods and object lessons from nature is fastened firmly to remain. Especially the parables of Christ taught with Christlike simplicity are so fastened, and this work for the younger members of the family is of the greatest consequence. Even children favored with Christian instruction at home learn much there, receive knowledge, and on returning home bring precious lessons from the treasure house of the heart.

Timely Words That Guide

A timely word spoken to one who needs help and guidance can be made effective by the Holy Spirit like a nail fixed securely in place. Such a word can reach the mind and influence destiny, so there is urgency to speak and work for others while opportunity remains. A timely word may be carried home to the mind by the Holy Spirit to give firm, lasting guidance toward Christ, and it matters greatly because the chance to reach a person may soon be gone. Words spoken in faithful Christian work become firmly fixed and effective like nails in a sure place to win sinners to the Saviour, with human workers and angels from heaven cooperating in the work.

A timely word can be firmly fixed in a hearer's mind like a nail in a sure place and help guide that person. Words and conduct leave lasting impressions that can strengthen good purposes and encourage others to do good, or plant evil that leads to harm. The Master of assemblies calls God's workers to come into line in unity, with no one standing back or going forward alone and no one fighting the battle on his own charges. Each is to fill his appointed place, yield a wilful spirit, and harmonize with brethren even when they do not view matters alike. Those who have followed their own way for a time can still return and get into line while opportunity remains, and it is best and a cause for gratitude that return is made possible instead of being left to go as they please.
