Ecclesiastes 12:4
And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low; And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;
The verse describes the decline that comes with old age. The shutting of the doors in the streets means that activity quiets and ordinary sounds in the streets grow faint. As the sound of grinding grows low, hearing weakens and appetite fails. Sleep becomes light, so that a person rises up and wakes even at the voice of a bird. Music loses its pleasure, with the voice failing and the enjoyment of music fading.
This picture belongs to the warning to remember the Creator before the years arrive when life brings little pleasure. These changes are the approaching signs of the days when death draws near.
