Ecclesiastes 12:5
Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:
The verse pictures the fears, burdens and fading desires of old age as life nears its end and death approaches. To be afraid of that which is high, with fears in the way, means that heights and dangers bring fear in old age. The flourishing of the almond tree signifies hair turning white.
The grasshopper becoming a burden depicts frailty and weakness in old age, when strength fails and ordinary movement becomes difficult. The same image also fits physical exhaustion so great that even a small burden feels heavy. Failing desire means that desires fade in old age.
Going to the long home means a person is nearing the grave. Mourners going about the streets means mourners move through the streets at the time of death. The whole picture warns the young to remember the Creator in youth, before the evil years of decline, old age and death arrive.
