Ecclesiastes 2:14

The wise man’s eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.

The wise are distinguished by having sight where it belongs, enabling them to see and to walk with understanding, while fools walk in darkness without such guidance. Yet both are overtaken by the same final event, so that neither wisdom nor folly escapes the common end. This was learned in Solomon's reflection on his pursuit of pleasure and achievement, where even wisdom proved unable to make earthly life satisfying or to prevent its shared outcome.

To have eyes in one's own head is to see for oneself in spiritual things rather than looking to the ends of the earth for another to see on one's behalf. That personal sight is vital touch with God and experimental, firsthand knowledge of the truth for oneself, instead of depending on erring mortals to tell what to do and direct the course. Those lacking that direct connection cannot serve as channels of truth and light to others. Those who are purified and taught by the Holy Spirit receive a heavenly anointing that enables them to discern heavenly things and to flash light amid the surrounding darkness.
