Ecclesiastes 3:22

Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?

The wherefore draws its conclusion from the likeness between humans and animals in death and in the matters being compared. Its reasoning does not depend on a different destiny for humans after death, on conscious existence after death, or on a future state of retribution. A person's portion is to rejoice in his own works, finding joy in the work allotted to him in life. The reason is that no one shall bring him to see what shall be after him, so he cannot see or know what will happen after he is gone. He also cannot control what will happen after he is gone.
