One Traveller Lifts His Fallen Companionby emmanuel_higgins

Ecclesiastes 4:9

Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.

Two working together accomplish far more and receive a good reward for their labor, while little can be done alone. In union there is strength and victory, while in discord, division and independent action there is weakness, defeat and ruin. Counseling together brings strength and safety because several minds can view every plan from all sides and carefully study every advance, preventing rash decisions and defeat, since even one mind alone can be turned aside from its proper course. Such cooperation bears fruit only when workers esteem others above self, refuse to treat their own plans and methods as perfect, and counsel together with humility, prayer and willingness to be advised, so that they are brought under God's guidance in united effort. In Christ's service this means each person faithfully performs a needed part with regard for others, with workers and churches and institutions acting in concert, for unity concentrates strength for useful service while strife and isolated efforts waste it.

Value of Working Together

Two working together accomplish more and receive a good reward for their labor, while little can be done by one working alone. United effort makes workers stronger and more effective than independent action, and its good return comes through that united effort. In Christian work this means acting with regard for others and working in concert rather than in isolated, sporadic efforts, for unity concentrates strength for useful service while strife and rivalry waste it. Division weakens the work and hinders its growth toward perfection, while consecration, peace, overcoming selfishness and resisting wrongdoing open the way for God to work among and through those united.

In union there is strength and victory, while in discord, division and independent action there is weakness, defeat and ruin. Selfishly valuing one's own plans, opinions and labors and moving independently brings ruin, but pressing together in true yoke-fellowship brings help, strength and success. Those fitted for translation must therefore stand as sentinels by uniting their forces, becoming servants of all and following the great Pattern.

Counseling together gives strength and safety because several minds enlisted can view every plan from all sides and carefully study every advance move, so that no enterprise ends in confusion, perplexity and defeat. This many-sided examination makes rash and ill-advised decisions less likely and gives greater safety against deception and wiles. One mind alone can be warped out of its proper channel by Satan, and even two who view things in a similar light can be overcome and led astray.

Fruitful cooperation requires esteeming others better than self and refusing to treat one's own plans, opinions and methods of labor as perfect. It calls for counseling together with much prayer and humbleness of mind, with willingness to be entreated and advised, and this brings workers under God's guidance so that He becomes their counselor. It requires well-understood plans, union of effort and perfect unity, venturing and planning together according to experience, rather than working on a narrow, cheap, solitary plan in selfish, self-esteemed and unsanctified independence.

Living Out United Effort

In gospel work two messengers are better than one because they encourage and strengthen one another to carry truth to those in deep darkness and opposition, and when they separate to reach more places their meeting again renews courage and energy for the work. From the beginning the same law was laid upon Adam and Eve, who were warned not to separate in their work because either one alone would meet greater danger from Satan, while remaining together gave greater safety. Students likewise accomplish good together rather than alone by helping and encouraging one another and their teachers, sharing burdens and creating a helpful atmosphere.

A husband and wife of one heart work more successfully united than alone by searching the Scriptures together, understanding the reasons of faith, and laboring together to save souls who are out of Christ. Even with the care of children the wife can unite with her husband to bear his burdens, encourage him, copy his letters, and share the various lines of the cause, making his work much more complete. A husband and wife covenanted to God's work carry it forward much better united than separately because they help and encourage and bless one another while ministering to those in need, with the Holy Spirit resting upon them. By bringing together experience and intense interest to cultivate God-given talents to the best and highest account, their connection with the God of heaven makes them a power when blended to strengthen one another and to carry the work forward intelligently wherever their ministry leads.

Those once united as true yoke-fellows in youth should unite again to work together, with the Holy Spirit helping their infirmities, for two united to help one another are better than one. Keeping harmony with a fellow believer such as Brother Palmer and refusing alienation sustains united effort, since in unity is strength and in division is weakness. Joining together to secure property for sanitarium work and to raise the money to pay for it is a plain instance of having a good reward for labor.

In Christ's service each person has a needed part, and success depends on faithful cooperation rather than independent action. Each worker is to act with regard for the others, and churches, publishing houses, and other institutions are to work in concert, for unity concentrates strength for useful service while strife, rivalry, and isolated, sporadic efforts waste it. Believers know God's working among and through them as they are wholly consecrated to Him, strive to live at peace, overcome selfishness, and resist wrongdoing. As those fitted for translation they are to stand as sentinels for God by uniting their forces, becoming servants of all and imitating Christ the great Pattern, since division weakens the church and hinders its unity and growth toward perfection.
