Ecclesiastes 5:14

But those riches perish by evil travail: and he begetteth a son, and there is nothing in his hand.

Wealth kept for its owner can be lost through painful misfortune and evil travail, so that it perishes entirely. When that loss occurs the father who has begotten a son finds his hand empty, with nothing left to give or to transmit as an inheritance.

Failure to pay what has been vowed to God invites divine anger against the withholder. That anger can destroy the work of his hands, turning the unpaid obligation into the cause of ruin.
