Ecclesiastes 6:3

If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.

In this verse the word soul denotes the inward part of a person where feelings and desires reside. It is the seat of the emotions and affections rather than any other sense of the term. To speak of the soul as not filled with good is to speak of those inner cravings left unsatisfied. The man described may have length of days and many offspring, yet his inner life remains empty of good.
