Ecclesiastes 8:15
Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun. Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
The book to which this verse belongs was written by Solomon, the son of David, when he was king in Jerusalem. It came after his unsatisfying experience in wealth and luxury and idolatry, when his many wives led his heart away. Its message is the emptiness of human life and the complete uselessness of all human pursuits apart from God. Its conclusion is that the whole duty of man is to revere God and keep His commandments. For morning reading on September 21 it stands together with chapters 7 and 9.
