Ecclesiastes 8:6

Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.

Every purpose has its own appointed time and judgment. A wise heart is able to discern both the time and the judgment appointed for events. When that discernment is turned to the signs Jesus gave, it recognizes from them that the kingdom of God is near at hand and that the generation seeing those signs will not pass away before they are fulfilled.

The misery of man is great upon him because he must face judgment for his deeds. The wicked know that a judgment is coming, and that knowledge itself adds to their misery, yet they do not know what shall come to pass or when and how it will happen. That judgment extends to every work brought by God into account, including every secret thing. The greatness of this human misery is plainly evident in prisons and hospitals and in the many places where suffering is found.
