Ephesians 4:21

If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

To have heard Christ and been taught as the truth is in Jesus stands opposite to walking as the Gentiles in vanity, darkness, ignorance and uncleanness, and it means putting off the old man corrupt by deceitful lusts, being renewed in mind, and putting on the new man in righteousness and true holiness shown in truthful, pure, kind and forgiving life.

The truth that is in Jesus is found in Him, heard from Him and taught by Him, presenting the great plan of salvation through Christ on the cross, showing sin as transgression of the law and the way to be saved, with Christ magnifying the law by His obedience and making obedience from the heart true sanctification.

To know that truth is not mere head knowledge but true conversion under the Holy Spirit, which sanctifies, refines and ennobles heart and character, governs thought, speech and action after Christ the pattern, and requires repentance, consecration and putting self aside.

That truth must be held firmly to the end as the only safeguard against Satan's deceptions and last-day error, never surrendered or exchanged for falsehood, and gaining the victory in the conflict between Christ and Satan.

It must be presented wisely and lived fully, taught simply and clearly in Christ's spirit of meekness, sympathy and love beginning with Jesus as sin-pardoning Saviour, and woven into character, business, family and ministry in obedience that purifies the soul and saves others.

Words and Ephesian Setting

Having heard Christ and having been taught as the truth is in Jesus stands opposite to walking as other Gentiles walk in vanity of mind with understanding darkened, alienated from the life of God through ignorance and blindness of heart, past feeling and given over to lasciviousness to work all uncleanness with greediness. Those so taught have not so learned Christ as to live separate from God letting the enemy work by and through them, having no faith in associates and refusing the spirit of repentance, nor to enjoy the privileges of the banquet of truth without eating the flesh and drinking the blood of the Son of God, nor to claim to believe and teach the Word to others while working works of unrighteousness. Being taught by Him means putting off concerning the former conversation the old man corrupt according to deceitful lusts, being renewed in the spirit of the mind, and putting on the new man created after God in righteousness and true holiness. That new life is shown in putting away lying to speak every man truth with his neighbor as members one of another, being angry without sinning and without letting the sun go down upon wrath, giving no place to the devil, stealing no more but laboring honestly to give to the needy, letting no corrupt communication proceed but only what edifies and ministers grace, not grieving the Holy Spirit by whom believers are sealed unto the day of redemption, and putting away all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and evil speaking with all malice in kindness and tenderheartedness forgiving even as God for Christ's sake forgave, so that words and deeds are fragrant with the holiness of truth and stand on guard against evil agencies.

The verse belongs to the plain and simple revelation of God's plan in Ephesians 4 that all His children may lay hold upon, declaring the means He appointed to keep unity in His church so its members reveal a healthy religious experience to the world. That unity and health mean conforming life to obedience to the commandments of God and being united in the faith of the Scriptures, bound together as one in Christ Jesus with lives hid with Christ in God, practicing the golden rule, bearing living testimony that the Father loves them even as He loves His Son, appreciating the gift of God, using heaven's provision at infinite cost to draw souls to obedience to the law of God, co-operating as laborers together with God, becoming partakers of the divine nature having escaped the corruption in the world through lust, and by consistent lives, courtesy, fidelity, justice and mercy magnifying the law of God and demonstrating that the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. The truth as it is in Jesus abiding in the hearts of members is what makes genuine peace and true Christianity with transformation of character and pure religious experience possible, uniting members in love rather than allowing differences of opinion to divide them, for truth is one and in Jesus to bring all into harmony on that platform. That sanctifying truth is all-powerful and far-reaching, softening and refining and ennobling those mingled together from different nationalities, taking away what is impetuous and rebellious and bringing man into harmony with heaven, uniting nationalities in one great brotherhood, removing national prejudice, with Christ in men uniting them to prepare for one family in heaven, so no separate interests are to be formed or maintained but in humility and union there is strength with believers subject one to another, one having influence over another as they are transformed and molded after the divine Pattern.

The instruction in Ephesians 4 means much and is to be read most solemnly and impressed upon minds, calling for a great reformation in the lives of believers, in words and works and spiritual understanding, because many have become hard-spirited as strangers to the working of the Holy Spirit. It directs believers to catch daily the inspiration of the angels in the heavenly courts and to breathe the atmosphere of heaven.

The verse stands with Ephesians 4:1-32 as a warning every soul must take to set the churches in order and close the door of unbelief, to make straight paths for the feet so the weak are not turned out of the way, and to rescue souls in peril who do not see their spiritual danger, while Satan's seducing power increases to deceive if possible the very elect, requiring faith and works in clear distinct lines and gathering every ray of light to substantiate the truth and bear aloft the third angel's message. It stands with all of Ephesians 4 and 5 and Ephesians 6:10-18 as protection for the foundation of faith in the third angel's message built over sixty years, so that the truth as it is in Jesus keeps every pin and pillar unmoved against every effort of Satan to tear up that foundation, and knowing the Word's truth calls for readiness to work in harmony and to be prepared for God's seal. Loyalty to God's law is required of those who would live in its principles and receive the blessings of obedience, while verses 11-13 teach that every gift is essential to the success of God's work in the way the Lord works through the church.

The verse is words of inspiration to be studied and obeyed, not to be ignored or disregarded or treated with indifference, for it is the doers of the Word who will receive the reward. Through the power and work of Satan the world has mistaken and forgotten God and is living in sin, with man's influence working against God, his knowledge of God and His Word perverted and his understanding darkened. God does not leave one soul in darkness and does not look upon the peril of men and remain silent, but speaks through His delegated servants and sends His warnings that must be voiced, with fallen humanity as the field cared for by God, bought with a price as His special property, and speaking the truth as it is in Jesus as the solemn responsibility resting upon every true believer as messengers to proclaim the truth as laborers together with God.

Truth Centered in Jesus

Truth is in Jesus, found in him, heard from him, taught by him and learned through him, and Christian teaching and preaching centered in him proclaims that truth simply and clearly. It must be wanted from God and learned personally from the Bible by reverencing Scripture, studying to know for oneself, pleading for light, asking to be led into all truth, fasting and praying in secret, and opening the heart for God to write truth upon its tablets. It is not to be refused candid investigation with earnest prayer, opposed when not understood, decided under opposition rather than investigation, believed or rejected merely because trusted associates do so, proudly assumed as already fully possessed, or despised when unfolded light does not harmonize with preconceived ideas, lest doubt and unbelief be cherished and God's counsel rejected. It must be received with Jesus in it through the Spirit rather than handled through human effort or false theories, and each must understand it for self instead of adopting a position merely because another holds it. Genuine peace in the church is impossible unless this truth abides in the hearts of members, for true Christianity cannot be practiced without transformation of character and true morality cannot be maintained without pure religious experience. It must not be resisted, yet resistance through unbelief was certain to come and brings great sorrow of heart.

The truth as it is in Jesus is the great plan of salvation and the work of redemption presented clearly and simply. It shows Christ upon Calvary's cross to bring redemption within reach, shows sin is transgression of the law, makes plain the plan of salvation, explains clearly the steps requisite in conversion, tells what one must do to be saved, and teaches hearers as children how to make Jesus a friend and bring him into life-work, with simplicity of true Bible religion and heart service rather than intellectual discourse. Presenting it means making plain the requirements of both law and gospel and showing Christ as the way, the truth, and the life, who saves all who come to him and intercedes as victorious conqueror, not as one trying to persuade the Father to be compassionate. In him he becomes wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption, and God's revealed Word exposes sin with power to reclaim from it and keep from transgression, to be studied, obeyed and lived as unchanging. His mission reveals humanity's fallen condition and God's plan to save, for the depth of ruin is seen only by looking at the redemption that draws up, while the law displayed at Calvary shows the extent of that ruin and the plan is discerned in Christ's death. He is the sin-pardoning Saviour whose precious sacrifice and blood forgives sin as the only source of true satisfaction and joy, to be looked to, believed in and presented to the world, especially to men in trust and the higher classes, unpopular yet heard at camp meetings where hearers need special help, and teachers must understand the Bible to instruct those needing light, with forgiven ministers and physicians becoming exponents of Christ's blood.

The truth in Jesus is knowing God's holy, just and good law as Christ lifted it up, magnified it, unfolded every precept and proved it unchangeable by his obedience, leaving an example so man can meet its demands. Obedience from the heart to every precept of Jehovah is true Bible sanctification, not feeling and impulse without searching Scripture, but knowing God's requirements and obeying them, holding truth against Satan's fables through lifelong persevering effort, unto a pure holy heaven for commandment keepers and a crown of life that measures with the life of God. The law known apart from Christ crushes sinful men and blots the sinner out of existence, but known in connection with Christ, receiving him by faith as substitute and surety, it makes man a prisoner of hope, and Christ's death to save proves its immutability. It means entire willing obedience to be sacredly cherished and lived and presented to people in clear plain lines, each believer letting light shine to those in darkness.

The truth as it is in Jesus is simple Bible truth in its simplicity, accessible to ordinary people whose understanding accords with it when guided by the Holy Spirit, with truths necessary for salvation made clear, while people lose their way following their own judgment instead of God's revealed will. It is to be presented simply and clearly for full impression, and simply and forcefully, with receivers speaking it, praying it and living it without departing from God's Word for human ideas, for God's Word is spirit and life working to save and the only safe foundation for trust. It is the word of the Lord and reasons of faith to be sounded forth by laborers who gain access and prepare the way, which thousands in Boston crave and long to hear, needing the Spirit's working on minds to receive it. Every word of it is to be talked, prayed and believed, standing against specious arguments and sentiments different from Bible truth, against hungering for novelty, and against spiritualistic-appearing beautiful sentiments bringing uncertainty and confusion that would deceive if possible the very elect. Holding it means refusing to stand on the devil's side by dwelling on mistakes of men departed from the faith to seducing spirits, and giving attention instead to unworked world-wide fields.

Truth in Jesus can be experienced though its full height, breadth and depth exceed understanding. The mystery of God's love in giving his Son as sacrifice and propitiation for sin cannot be completely grasped or explained in this life and is beyond human understanding. Yet humble contrite seekers who value Christ's sacrifice may see as much of divine compassion as they can bear, and understanding grows with appreciation of his sacrifice as they search Scripture, with redemption opening in increasing brightness and depth.

Prophets defending truth had God's words and understood salvation to be entered upon through the coming Messiah. After Christ came and died as man's sacrifice and typical sacrifices were fulfilled by the antitype, the old truth in the typical service was revealed in true significance. Light from Calvary's cross reflected back into the Jewish age gives character and significance to the whole Jewish economy, and on this side of the cross there is in a special manner the truth as it is in Jesus as present truth communicated through the Redeemer. The Jewish Scriptures with types and symbols pointed to Christ and redemption, but inherited traditions and human interpretations obscured their spiritual meaning, and though Jews had Scriptures and evidence of his identity they rejected testimony because acceptance required giving up cherished beliefs and practices. When Thessalonians misinterpreted instruction to mean the Lord was immediately to appear in the clouds, Paul had to present the truth as it is in Jesus as clear statement to correct error left on record, and every advance of error works good to sincere lovers of God as sentinels search Scripture and make truth sharper, clearer, in bold relief. Spirit-filled apostles boldly witnessed that Jesus of Nazareth is divine, rose from the dead and is exalted to God's right hand, and through such work multitudes came to knowledge of Christ.

The truth as it is in Jesus is the doctrines of God's Word, especially principles of his government which Christ presented and by which he guided Israel in the wilderness by unseen power, to be earnestly inquired into and made the foundation of faith rather than sand. Principles believed and received into the heart govern and control actions, so clearer understanding makes religious life more spiritual and affections more holy, and they are to be cherished in all relations of life to form characters fitted for God's heavenly family, with God's people representing Christ in works, practice and teaching, separate from corrupting perverse lax sentiments. When the Spirit works on heart and mind and self is put aside, truth continues to unfold clearer, growing brighter and more precious as beheld, quickening mind, subduing selfish unchristlike traits, raising aims toward holiness. It is needed by all and found in Christ's words in John 17, alone sufficient to sustain courage, strengthen faith and keep souls in God's love, with faith laying hold on promises as one's own. It consists of fundamental vital saving truths distinct from minor points, perplexing questions and side issues of little importance, for dwelling and disputing on nonessentials draws minds from saving truth, harms spirituality and church peace and unity, and gives critics excuse for rejecting truth and charging Christians cannot agree.

The truth as it is in Jesus reveals both depth of God's infinite broad deep love and firmness of his justice which does not excuse sin or cancel penalty for disobedience. It reaches fallen oppressed people, lifting those who turn from sin and trust in Jesus through repentance and faith. At the cross God's hatred of sin and full justice appear as the eternal Son equal with God bore wrath deserved by sinners as Substitute, proving sin must be repented and forsaken or sinners not healed by faith in his suffering and made pure will bear punishment themselves. It is revelation of the Godhead's glory in Christ, and all one can know of God to soul-saving is the measure attained, for Christ represents the Father; Immanuel, God with us, is most wonderful to grasp, Christ the wisdom of God and great I AM, whose divine character contemplated leads to exclaiming over riches of wisdom and knowledge displayed in love reaching to recover lost ruined man.

Truth includes all Christ taught, with the Son taking human nature to show what it may become when following his Word, tempted in every way yet not overcome, the pattern in all things whose perfect character is to be shown in every part of life. Jesus himself is the light of the world and greatest witness for truth, who when necessary spoke truths keen and cutting as a two-edged sword home to conscience so priests and rulers could not bear his words and repeatedly planned his death, departing elsewhere when they sought his life. Thorough knowledge of Bible truth offers each receiver of Christ preparation for eternal life. Christ the great Worker did not measure work by hours but gave time, heart, soul and strength for humanity, devoting whole days to labor and whole nights to prayer to be braced against the wily foe's deceptions and fortified to uplift and restore. Faith must take in more and become more, for while Satan exists every inducement allures to self-deception and death. God's Word alone moves conscience and quickens mind to understand and heart to feel, so its precious meaning must not be perverted, crushed out or weakened.

Light given line upon line through testimonies was rejoiced in, by which through cooperation with God his people grow to full stature in Christ, but Satan working through misnamed medical missionary work led many to cast it underfoot, covering sacred present truth with disrespectful statements and principles contrary to Christ's teaching that confuse minds about God's Word. Truth is in Jesus and found by searching the Bible, and those who embraced it remain valuable only if they continue following on in that search. Paul proclaimed it as a most effectual missionary worker, a clear eloquent speaker able to meet adversaries on almost any ground they chose, declaring he was not behind the chiefest apostle. It is understood by asking what must be done to be saved, then searching the Bible and praying earnestly for the Holy Spirit. There is call for deeper insight into it in contrast to a fallen hireling world in strange hands where men rule and preach for hire, all business is strife for supremacy, and few would follow Christ if he walked city streets today. Centered in Jesus it has real experienced power, and those experiencing its virtue are to labor for the gospel. Knowing it is essential to eternal life and seeing God's kingdom, not replaceable by learning or intellect, requiring the Spirit to sanctify understanding to convict and convert. It is to be searched out with essential saving and practical truths made clear, while teachings beyond understanding are received as God's revelation not explained by human reasoning.

Conversion and Sanctified Character

To have heard Christ and been taught as the truth is in Jesus is to be truly converted under the Holy Spirit's transforming power, putting off the old self, being renewed in mind, and putting on the new self in righteousness and true holiness, so that sound teaching reaching the heart produces sound conduct pervaded by Christ's love. The converted person is enlightened, with Christ's life within, showing the truth through kind, humble, unselfish conduct, doing right because it is right, loving others, and reflecting Christ in words, motives, and actions in home, neighborhood, and church for eternity. Such change burnishes off sharpness of character and coarseness of conversation, impressing the mold of Jesus in meekness and lowliness, and requires no longer living as before but showing by daily conduct a decided change of life and character.

Truth received with Jesus sanctifies, refines, elevates, ennobles, and purifies heart and character, governing thought, speech, and action, changing mind and character, bringing every faculty under Christ's rule, and making people upright in word and action after Christ the pattern. Separated from Jesus truth is powerless, does not sanctify, and has little effect, but received with Him it has telling power upon the whole man and sends forth light with divine credentials that bears upon the heart. This must be known by personal experience of its effect on one's own heart, not only by telling what past Christians enjoyed, with character testifying for Christ in fresh personal witness, and conduct that degrades purity shows the truth has not taken root and conversion is still needed.

Knowing the truth calls for intelligent understanding of Christ, the love and fear of God, the truths of the Word and the reasons of faith as the pattern of true goodness in whom hopes of eternal life are centered, gained by studying Christ and building character. Merely having the privilege of hearing without gaining this knowledge leaves one destitute of true piety, and feasting the mind on sensational stories crowds it out and unfits the mind for practical duty and religious thought. Its power reaches the heart when one stays close to Christ, brings every ability under His control, hides self in Him, and makes truth one's own by experimental knowledge, with pardon, new birth, the Spirit within as vitalizing power, and higher wisdom for last-day perils, rather than rebellion, debating spirit, or trust in finite men.

Truth must be held as it is in Him, not merely possessed as doctrine, planted in the heart by the Holy Spirit and nourished by watchfulness, prayer, and grace to give discernment, purify, guide, and bless. Having truth without union with Christ does not keep from sin, and hope lies in binding to Christ and striving for His character, with Christ preparing mind and heart to receive Him as personal Saviour. Held and taught as it is in Jesus it purifies, ennobles, and sanctifies, making human wisdom appear foolishness, producing like-mindedness with God, childlike meekness, and a forbearing courteous Christlike spirit that respects conscience and refuses oppression.

There is a difference between accepting and holding truth and having the truth as it is in Jesus which does something for the receiver, for salvation depends not on amount of light but on its use to reveal defects, perfect character so sin ceases, sanctify the soul, and fit to bless others in darkness. Head knowledge alone cannot be trusted, for truth and the plan of salvation can be voiced without its warm converting rays changing the soul, while true knowledge looks to Jesus as sin-pardoning Saviour in entire surrender, feels His mercy and transforming grace, assimilates truth as food becomes blood, wears Christ's yoke in self-denial, and reaches completeness in Him. Knowing it is more than correct doctrine or giving up outward sins; it must take root, shape a Christlike life, and speaking it while acting unkindly when opposed misrepresents Christ and shows one has not learned in His school.

Knowing the truth as it is in Jesus requires thorough repentance, reformation, complete consecration, and a humble teachable heart with self put aside, learned through the Scriptures. Those remaining unconverted in hatred, alienation, strife, self-confidence, and high-mindedness, in word, act, business, and home, have not learned it, and if they do not repent, seek forgiveness, and be purified by the Spirit and cleansing blood they will lose opportunity and face severer condemnation for shaming Christ while professing Bible truth. Pride and taking the teacher's place instead of the learner's prevents coming to that knowledge.

The truth as it is in Jesus is a wall of fire around the soul that clings to Him with mind fixed on Christ and unshaken confidence in His atonement, with Jesus' name driving back temptation and lifting a standard against Satan so the soul stands firm as rock to principle. It is felt in the heart and loved, keeping from every snare while refining, purifying, and ennobling as one beholds Jesus moment by moment, is changed into His image, continues in self-denial and sacrifice, cooperates with One who knows no failure, and stands among overcomers by the Lamb's blood and testimony. Temptations will still pour in as God's proving in probation revealing the heart, with no sin in being tempted but sin in yielding.

Receiving the living Saviour through belief brings a true sense of salvation as a daily experience growing in righteousness and true holiness and increasing light. Accepting truth learned from Him opens the way for God through the Spirit to restore His image and bring new life to sin-defiled minds, requiring joining to Christ, keeping the cross before attention and affections, and being cleansed by His shed blood from selfishness and sin. Receiving and walking in that light lets the Spirit shape the whole person, dispel moral darkness, reveal defects, and bring daily growth in holiness and grace.

Knowing the truth grows as people faithfully serve in God's cause, with God giving fuller knowledge of it. It is necessary for the sorely tempted and ready to die, to be gained as personal lived knowledge with Christ's teaching brought to the heart and presented through the Spirit to help others know it. God can reveal this truth even to those without access to His Word so they discern it and take their place with His people. It gives the true believer peace in believing to take up work and bear trials without losing self-control, with the heart filled with Christ's tenderness instead of masterly passion and harsh words that lose saving power.

Christ opens the mind to recognize truth as it is in Jesus with fresh understanding by the Spirit when the Word is presented, though human messengers' limitations can distort the teaching. It is received in Jesus by humble hearts made ready through earnest continuous prayer, learning in His school and teaching others what was learned. It is light to be understood and rejoiced in by humbling the heart and welcoming Jesus as Instructor, coming with evidence and mercy so receivers are baptized with the Spirit as living channels of light, while pride, criticism, and denunciation shut it out, darken the mind, and persistent rejection after piled evidence brings guilt. Knowing it now is living in the light of God's presence like sunshine.

Truth found in Jesus must be learned through personal surrender to Him, and a teacher can present it and its duties rightly only after that experience, otherwise it is empty talk. It sanctifies the believer through constant earnest belief and following God's exact lines of work, with safety only therein, while Satan seeks to prevent this especially through unsafe association with the depraved that clouds the soul until righteousness and holiness are no longer distinguished from defilement and sin. Knowing Jesus and the truth in Him is a source of joy even amid poverty. It is received, understood, and obeyed in proportion to capacity, opened by humbly yielding to God's drawing and willingness to do His will, and increased by taking Christ's yoke and following on to know the Lord.

Truth is found in Jesus by following Him as ongoing growth in understanding, faith, and holiness, which loses freshness and power when it stops developing. Knowing it changes the heart, and teachers show it by practicing kindness and tenderness with sympathetic words that strengthen, encourage, and bless those in need, expressing love for Christ in word and action. It is known by inward spiritual perception that defines the walk, hides self in Jesus without self-exaltation, and brings sanctification producing self-abasement, lowliness, and humble sacrifice without display. Being taught by Him in whom truth is brings happiness in this life and immortal life to come, separates from the world and transforms for God's spiritual house in desire for pure teaching and changed life, and acknowledging it means laying down opposition to God and proclaiming it clearly for acceptance.

Knowing the truth means being led to it through personal effort and living faith with awakened soul needs. Those who earnestly seek God and Scripture can learn it by coming to Jesus and praying to know it. Knowing it has a refining, ennobling, sanctifying effect on heart and character that the life witnesses to. In Jesus it warms and strengthens the soul through divine grace, producing Christlike character as fragrant as flowers.

Holding Firm Against Error

The truth as it is in Jesus must be held firmly without wobbling, as sure anchorage where the anchor holds, and held fast to the end because the end of all things is at hand. Holding fast that truth means triumphing with the triumphant third angel's message while enduring men saying all manner of evil falsely for Christ's sake, as was said against Christ the Majesty of heaven and the world's Redeemer, without failing or being discouraged. Standing in that truth and holding to the established foundations of faith brings unity with God and fellow believers, received by believing God's messages for the present time and accepting the light given to God's people. It requires standing firm in its defense and using influence for Christ, learning meekness and lowliness from Christ, since self-exaltation prevents clear discernment of His character and work. Those who value this truth and want to reveal its beauty, power, and sanctifying grace receive strength from God to resist temptation, and standing rooted and grounded in it is the only foundation for gospel and medical missionary work to withstand temptation and last-day deception.

Truth in Jesus is the only safeguard against Satan's devices, attacks, deceptions, and snares, including his scheme of putting amusements and this life's interests before eternal life, and nothing else will endure. Revealed truth planted in the heart by the Holy Spirit and nourished and watered by divine grace alone makes men right and keeps them right and pure in humble obedience as shield and buckler, where mere education cannot ensure integrity. It must be brought to bear upon the heart to show where character is defective and what conformity to the true standard requires, convicting the selfish, the proud, the passionate, robbers of God in tithes and offerings, and the doubting and unbelieving, so they are not left blinded about spiritual standing, and its work continues until every man is presented perfect in Christ Jesus. It is to be contended for inch by inch with the Spirit's help, woven into every transaction of life, made prominent and never belittled or crowded out of sight, found in the living oracles as food of the soul binding the soul to Him in whom we live and move and have our being as golden links. Those who do not obey the truth cannot truly possess or appreciate it, and without it even ministers drift away from Christ, away from piety and religious principle, becoming blind leaders of the blind.

The truth as it is in Jesus must not be resisted, yet resistance through unbelief was certain to come, and seeing it brings great sorrow of heart. Some who received great light and knowledge rejected it after conviction, stifling conscience until hardened beyond conviction so conviction could no longer reach or penetrate the callous heart. Sinning against light until callous, they sacrifice principle until they cannot see the difference between the sacred and the common, confusing sacred and common, and go steadily downward in the path of ruin. Misrepresenting that truth through unbelief, prejudice, or a trifling, sarcastic spirit acts against the Spirit of God and becomes an offense to God, requiring distinguishing between sacred and common and choosing open loyalty to the right before men and angels, which alone gives safety in the day of test and trial just before us.

Accepting the truth as it is in Jesus means accepting Christ rather than Satan and his falsehoods, while rejecting it means turning from Christ and identifying with those disloyal to God. Accepting anything in its place is a temptation to yield to the powers of darkness, and Christ wants His followers united in the truth. The truth as it is in Jesus is a sacred trust too dearly purchased for even its least principle to be surrendered, to be jealously guarded. When unsound doctrine is introduced it endangers the flock of Christ, and those in authority have a duty to make a firm, decided protest, since peace and unity do not justify accepting teaching that conflicts with truth in Jesus. Such rebuke will often be used to create sympathy for the reproved without regard for harm done to precious souls and to Christ's kingdom, and the crisis decides who are God's faithful sentinels and who will be true to principle.

The truth as it is in Jesus will gain the victory promised in the prophecy of the conflict between Christ and Satan, a conflict present in every struggle between good and evil, truth and error, and the kingdoms of light and darkness, growing more intense from generation to generation. What is needed is that truth presented as it is in Jesus, genuine Bible truth in its simplicity to be talked, prayed, believed, dwelt upon, filling minds and building strongholds of truth, presented in utmost simplicity as Christ presented it so people can understand and clouds of error are dispelled. Satan's theories, lies, seductive arts, and objectionable subjects are not to be brought before minds that should not hear them, and repeating the devil's lies serves the devil. Handling objectionable subjects as little as possible keeps minds and principles purer, cleaner, and less tainted, standing against specious arguments and sentiments different from Bible truth, against hungering and thirsting after something new, and against spiritualistic-appearing beautiful sentiments that bring uncertainty and confuse minds and would deceive if possible the very elect.

Truth found in Jesus must be acknowledged by laying down arms and discarding the infatuation of false theories and false religion, which are legion and must be exposed and cast out of the heart so people can have truth in contradiction to error, with one continual contest over this surrender. The people must know what is truth, presented in clear straight lines, and because that truth is brought at great sacrifice, obligations are mutual, calling them to surrender hearts to God, help in the work, and labor in His lines. Truth comes with power to expose the conflict between God and the spirit of the world, and when brought plainly and strongly with power from on high to bear against worldly values it condemns exciting pleasures and corrupting charms, burns its way to hearts, and makes plain there is no concord between Christ and Belial. Its faithful preaching by demonstration of the Spirit and power of God raises opposition and awakens persecution and makes the natural heart rebel, because the natural heart cannot discern the things of the Spirit of God. Mere religious profession without a changed heart does not make a person know God, and an unconsecrated, unmoved minister who presents truth in an unimpassioned manner with his own soul unmoved does only harm and lowers the standard, while those in whom grace and truth reign become living representatives of the mind and spirit of Christ.

Truth found in Jesus must be held and taught as it is in Him or it has no value to the believer, purifying, ennobling, and sanctifying the soul, while human opinions and wisdom are exposed as foolishness before God's truth. Knowing the right way means knowing this truth, but people can forsake it when they trust their own wisdom and become instruments against it. Accepting the truth as it is in Jesus makes the believer aggressive for truth by precept and example, so that one soul receiving it weakens the hold of evil angels upon other souls. Evil angels know this, and Satan alarmed at losing his prey first seeks to deceive the new believer and then to oppress and persecute, enlisting evil men rebuked by the believer's light to draw him from allegiance to God and from the narrow path of holiness. The Holy Spirit reveals the truth in Jesus through chosen messengers, and leaders must not treat their own interpretations as foundational truth nor reject new light because it conflicts with cherished beliefs and interpretations, but put self aside, humbly exalt Jesus, and not reject truth merely because it differs from what was assumed.

The truth as it is in Jesus is the sword of the Spirit, which cuts both ways, the weapon of warfare for those who rely on Christ day by day and bring truth into practical life, giving wisdom and power from One mighty in counsel to those who seek the Lord in prayer as Daniel did three times a day. It must be cherished, with heart and mind kept open to conviction to learn the love of a holy and righteous God, which works in a mysterious and wonderful way to secure salvation, with a crown of life measured by the life of God as reward to be won, while Satan presses falsehoods on those who do not cherish it. It is to be stood for steadfastly with the whole armor kept on, requiring wisdom and blessing from God for the believer and his household. It requires holding the beginning of confidence firm unto the end through many opportunities to become acquainted with it, looking to Jesus as pattern in character building, studying carefully the life of Christ, constantly comparing one's own way of viewing things with the way they are viewed in the Word of God, and never misrepresenting the character of Christ. Those who do this stand on vantage ground before God, sit at the wedding feast clad in the wedding garment, the righteousness of Christ, and rear a character structure solid and symmetrical rather than weak and imperfect, never departing from the way of the Lord. People whose hearts are not in harmony with that truth may reject it rather than surrender their own ideas, while those who receive and obey it remain faithful, and introducing falsehoods into God's work mars that truth and obscures its clear witness, so it must be presented as truth in Him.

Presenting Truth to Others

Truth as it is in Jesus must be presented wisely and in a Christlike way to those who have not heard it, including warning of what is coming upon the world, giving line upon line and precept upon precept, here a little and there a little, in words easy to be understood, gently and lovingly to those who have known only traditions and fables. Souls hungering for the bread of life must be fed with bread and not a stone, babes with milk and not strong meat, withholding the strongest meat and parts of the special message until people are prepared to receive them, while discourses are published in leaflets so misrepresentation is corrected and people know exactly what was said. The first principles of Christianity are to be taught step by step before introducing the Sabbath, and the most striking or objectionable features are not to be pressed at the outset.

Presenting the truth means first holding the attention of people who have no understanding of doctrinal subjects by melting and subduing the soul with Jesus Christ as the sin-pardoning Saviour and keeping the cross of Calvary before the people. Transgression of the law caused Christ's death, and Christ died to give men opportunity to become loyal subjects of His kingdom, and this is to be presented positively and urgently with the brightness of Christ's righteousness and practical godliness taught through Christ's lessons, lifting the Man of Calvary higher with no breath wasted in controversy. It means pointing to Christ who came to save sinners, lived as humanity's example, endured rejection and death, rose and lives and intercedes, bringing possibility of close union with Him in light, peace, comfort, and the gift of the Comforter for trial. It is present truth for this time, an important message from another world to be preached in consecration to holier ground with power from heaven, taking hold of the spiritual nature so divine power is communicated, letting simple doctrines shine in true bearings urged home by relative importance, connecting new and old by the Spirit without obscurity, compromise, or fear, and without losing sight of the cross as great center of all truth, which the Spirit makes effective to saving souls and the only safety in perilous times.

Health reform may prepare the way but must never replace or obscure the gospel, which is to be preached with Christ's lessons and brightness of the Sun of Righteousness, without abrupt declarations, through humble loving testimony and practical godliness. Teaching as the truth is in Jesus requires meekness and humility with self purged away, with mind and character balanced by holy enlightenment of the Spirit operating on heart and moulding character, sought prayerfully as hidden treasure. Taught free from self it has a hundredfold greater converting power upon human hearts, while mingled with self it shuts out wisdom from above and loses that power, and presenting it simply, truthfully and humbly requires divine power sought from a heart hungering for Christ's righteousness. Workers trained and educated under Christ's Spirit with wills submitted to God are more effective than many lacking knowledge and faith, and messengers must understand the truth to work together with God, since God's power alone softens hearts and removes worldliness and pride.

Presenting the truth as it is in Jesus means presenting it in Christ's own spirit and manner, in constant touch with Christ, softened and subdued by contemplating Him, looking unto Jesus constantly, catching His spirit, and praying for Christ as pattern, so as to be a wise careful gentle teacher. It is to be shared with sympathy, tenderness, love, meekness, lowliness and reverence in speech and conduct, relying on the Spirit for words and sharing through the story of the atonement, not to provoke contention or win arguments or retaliate in sharp critical debating manner when opposed, and in this way it reaches honest hearts. God's word itself cuts to the heart, so harsh or severe speech is forbidden, and truth must be presented as Jesus presented it — with love, tender sympathy and perseverance to meet each need and bring the lost back to God.

The testing message for the world must be presented with life hid with Christ in God, where self is lost sight of because truth is so large, far-reaching, deep and broad, preaching not self, education, flowery discourses or floods of empty words. It means preaching big scriptural ideas people can grasp and leading them to dig out precious ore hidden in Scriptures, letting the Bible interpret itself, hiding in Jesus, and letting the Spirit come to hearts rather than relying on education. It means meeting ridicule and opposition without ridicule and sarcasm as weapons, but speaking calmly and distinctly for Christ's sake with discourses mixed with faith, in meekness and lowliness, clad in the whole armor of God and His Spirit with His righteousness before and glory behind, so heaven works with human agents where one plants, another waters, and God alone gives increase. When presenters are sure Christ is in them and abiding with them, walled in as it were with Jesus, the presentation has telling influence and success, and though many will not hear, honest inquirers dissatisfied with spiritual declension and hungry for bread of life will hear.

Truth as it is in Jesus is truth ministers must proclaim clearly and decisively with the Spirit and power of God, awakening conscience and bringing hearers to decisive life or death, elevating, refining and sanctifying true believers to live unselfishly. It must be presented surely and thoroughly in kindness and love for souls, leaving no uncertainty, to answer errors brought with force and apparent truth, kept warm with love for lessons of the Word and filled with expressions of Christ's love, communicating light and knowledge. This requires daily reconversion, living faith in Christ's grace, power of the Spirit to impress hearts, wisdom from the Spirit, and recognition every soul is precious, with ministers, converted teachers whose hearts reach out to lead souls to Christ, and parents filled with Scriptural evidence teaching in families in love, making words of truth a savor of life unto life. Those trained to work for Christ become prepared to present it, standing on an exalted holy platform without mixing truth with error or fanciful personal ideas, and living in accord with it. Presenting it requires trained understanding gained through earnest prayer and humble study of Satan's fall and Christ's life, teachings, miracles, death, resurrection and ascension, leading to seek God's wisdom to distinguish good from evil and righteousness from sin.

Truth is to be presented in simplicity meeting people where they are as Christ worked, so the uninformed may be reached and highest minds benefited also, with simple grasp of the Word and simple presentation, not burying truth so deep in science that common minds fail to see it. It means giving simple matter full of knowledge meeting wants of people and awakening minds to climb gradually, keeping religious phase before people in health teaching with Bible hygiene and temperance from Christian standpoint, with no abrupt declarations, health reform as wedge by which truth may enter but never replacing gospel. Doctrines presented with true godliness speak to hearts, and standing on eternal truth requires seeking God's help, with humility and dependence inviting heavenly agencies while impatience, jealousy and faultfinding show evil influence. Satan's theories, lies, seductive arts and objectionable subjects are not to be brought to minds that should not hear them, for repeating the devil's lies serves the devil, and handling them less keeps minds purer, while instead present truth is given, talked, filling minds and building strongholds of truth.

The truth is to be brought to minds in deepest degradation only after sympathetic care for physical necessities through medical missionary work, with the Spirit cooperating to stir moral powers and awaken minds to grasp firm rock foundation without startling strange doctrine, rescuing many including once able ministers overcome by intemperance. It is to be presented to sick and afflicted with solemnity, seriousness, simplicity and tenderness so they are drawn to the Saviour, with Christ upheld in word and deed as hope of eternal life, and kind gentle loving modest courteous words and actions helping win souls to unite weakness with His strength. Medical missionary work is to open the way for its reception, its leaders commending it by conduct and showing health reform brings physical, mental and spiritual improvement.

Presenting truth requires dignity, calmness and composure without excitement, speaking slowly and calmly yet earnestly as witness to souls in decision, revealing holy sensible calm not storm of confusion, with order and discipline, sobriety and holy consistency, not misrepresenting holy doctrines by strange performances, tumult or fanaticism that prejudices unbelievers against the message for this time. It requires distinguishing sacred from common with open loyalty before men and angels, which alone gives safety in day of test just before us, giving clear trumpet with no uncertain sound, plainly and with strength, so unconverted professors may hear, be converted, and look for His appearing without sin unto salvation. At the Sanitarium visitors should hear gospel plainly, its distinctive teachings evident, while Christians recommend faith through modest Christlike conduct rather than attacks on other beliefs, preaching earnestly and fully not weakly or diluted, revealing gospel in daily life as life to receivers and death to rejecters, with grace bringing belief and baptism.

Defending and vindicating truth as it is in Jesus must be done putting on Christ and abiding in Christ, keeping self out of sight, making no boast of knowledge, standing on eternal Word, making no reference to sly thrusts, manifesting no retaliation, sensitivity, irritation, sharpness, hasty feelings, hasty words or loss of self-control, but ever maintaining Christ's gentleness and dignity and elevated ennobling character of truth, with zeal controlled by the Spirit even when Scriptures are wrested and fables presented as truth. It must convince not humiliate, shunning controversy and overcoming evil with good while true as steel to principle, showing difference between truth and error with practical godliness, using Bible evidence for every point and sword of the Spirit skillfully, not words to condemn or assertions without proof, and before rulers needing Spirit-filled utterance without harsh words toward the ignorant. Having this truth means being imbued with Christ's Spirit, filled with fullness of God, with self and pride dead through close communion, unity, much seeking of heavenly wisdom and prayer, while acknowledging none know all Bible truth, and workers are to use influence on His side revealing genuine spirituality, firmly defending truth without dragon spirit of anger and accusation.

Truth is to be presented in love cautiously step by step where people are, dealing with souls honestly ignorant yet interested because Christ draws them and conscience tells them Bible teaching is true, with greatest care and constant guard, dealing out only such portions as hearers can grasp and appreciate. The most objectionable features are not to be pressed at the outset, nor denominational identity declared first, nor distinctive doctrines like seventh-day Sabbath and non-immortality of soul pressed to erect formidable barriers, but advantage taken of circumstances, speaking first on agreed points, dwelling on practical godliness, giving evidence of being a Christian desiring peace, loving souls and conscientious, thus gaining confidence, subduing hard heart and preparing soil, then leading along to further doctrines when time allows. When presented thus hearers recognize with joy new light on the Word, but when given in too large measure some go away never to return, misrepresent truth and wrest Scriptures to confuse others.

The saving truths of the gospel centered in Jesus, embracing whole gospel in third angel's message, must be presented in all work with full distinctness and power with nothing lessening force for this time, to separate a people to stand on eternal truth as life-and-death message and great power of God made effectual. The truth as it is in Jesus must be advocated now with every talent held in trust to stand before world in clear lines, because effort to press Sunday law must be vigorously met, crisis is right upon them, last issue will soon be met, and they are not ready. Teaching must avoid entanglement with unrelated theories and hobbies having no connection with work for this time, such as whether world is round or flat, for Satan leads minds to distracting theories so they will not give solemn message; shape of world will not save soul, while believing and obeying means everything, calling for true godliness, heart holiness, freedom from selfishness, envy and jealousy, prayer, humbling soul, faithful continuance in well-doing, and leading flock to higher streams to seek God while He may be found.

Truth presented as it is in Him will have an effect, and when disciples proclaimed that truth hearts yielded to power of their message. Presenting it is work God appoints men to do in this period of earth's history, done under God's daily supervision by working of His Spirit on mind, with angels as helpers, to impart truth and mold minds rather than be molded, carrying great responsibilities to stand before medical profession without endangering influence but in unity and harmony as blessing sharing knowledge God gave. In Los Angeles it is to be magnified, carried on in earnest faith with wise personal effort to bring many souls from darkness to light without delay, for delay leaves undone what might have been done years ago.

Presenting truth as it is in Jesus requires having His Spirit with contrite heart and humble soul-saving works whose character saves precious souls, looking on faults not to condemn but to restore and heal, keeping God's holy law while others disregard it, forming character for eternal life by receiving and diffusing light, and growing in grace by imparting what is received as worker together with God. Laying hold of God by faith and laboring to bring souls to Christ requires dwelling in doctrinal discourses upon this truth. Teaching should direct mind to truth in Jesus not divert from it, and doing it well requires qualified people with experience and wisdom. It must be known and then taught just as it is in Him, which requires searching Scriptures as diligent students with wisdom above human, hearts softened and subdued, receiving ingrafted Word, with Scripture as supreme standard and detector of error deciding all controversies, no human opinion received without comparison and no smartness mixed with divine truth.

Truths drawn from the Word concerning salvation of souls are to be presented as it is in Jesus. It must be represented clearly, for conceit, blindness and unbelief misrepresent it, while careful attention to prophecy keeps light shining amid moral darkness, requiring knowing prophecies and refusing wisdom in own conceit, watching in faith so light shines in clear distinct rays. It is to be presented without opposition or controversy to perishing including those in high positions for whom far more should be done, by humble ministers with wives sharing burden in humility dignified by grace, prepared to speak in mothers' meetings or other meetings. The truth for this time is to be presented as important message centered on Christ proclaimed with power from heaven, communicating divine power to hearers when it takes hold of preachers' spiritual life. Learning it means receiving instruction keeping people faithful, presented distinctly from Scripture as living reality amid drawing-away influences.

Truth must be presented with Him at center, including proclaiming prophetic truths in Daniel and Revelation while uplifting Jesus as center of hope. It is to be presented so hearers apply it to own lives and become wise unto salvation. It must be presented in way representing Him, calling for candid investigation and sanctifying effect, not heated criticism or rash defense. Those exposing error must do so in Spirit of Jesus with Bible-based love, patience and forbearance toward those in error. When people hear and are taught by Him they can accept truth as it is in Him, and simple words of truth can lead unbelievers to accept it as Christ's righteousness and grace appear in souls.

It is to be presented with Christ's preciousness and value set forth faithfully, calmly, without impetuosity, hurried speech or lack of tact, speaking truth in love with love of Christ manifest in heart, countenance and words, with manner and words under Spirit even in controversy, self hid in Christ, so words true because inspired by indwelling Spirit lead many more to believe, while impetuosity robs precious words of power. Messengers must understand it to become laborers together with God, God's power subduing pride and enabling Christlike words and actions. It must be presented not controversially, seeking God with much prayer to teach workers how to work and how to present it where interest is awake. Those teaching it must present it as clean vessels leavened with Bible religion, under subduing sanctifying refining influence, pure steadfast unmovable abounding in love of Jesus, living representatives by strict holy compliance with God's law in purity and holiness, so powerful influence goes forth as light reflecting light with power attending proclamation.

Truth must take hold of spiritual nature not remain mere doctrinal discourse, and then divine power is communicated through teachers to those addressed. It is to be taught with mind fixed on God and filled with Spirit, affirmatively and with love, without accusation or words stirring enmity and strife. Its presentation bears divine credentials only through workers whose self is subdued and yoked with Christ, receiving divine touch and catching Master's Spirit to work out what Christ works in, with Christ as perfect Pattern of humanity. Presenting it means directing people to Saviour gently and courteously even to opposers. In high broad sense it requires workers rooted and grounded in faith once delivered, understandingly efficient, giving sign of their order and showing plainly they are on Lord's side. Learning of Christ means studying His Word in meekness, lowliness, obedience and willingness to do God's work in God's way, an enduring work putting Christ first above personal views. When opponents press for controversy it is to be presented with Saviour uplifted without rashness or discourtesy. It means representing it in simplicity through Spirit of truth to reach and bless perplexed bewildered people. It requires power from on high with simplicity, truthfulness and humility, hungering for Christ's righteousness and turning from world's pollution, never basis for self-righteousness.

Learning it equips believers to present it to others as missionaries with Christ as helper. It is warning message exalting standard of God's law where lowered and trampled, borne in Jesus' name and strength by grace to reach hearts and break self-satisfied feeling of needing no physician while spiritually sick, deceived, unchristian yet pleased with self and walking in darkness as in light; spoken in freedom strengthened by Christ's power it is felt as saving power lifting speaker above weakness even while afflicted by Satan. A person is convinced when it is presented to mind and appealed to heart with only truth and love, never compulsion, restriction or force, for Christ refuses every other method. Presenting it brings spiritual light through Spirit, calling hearers to obey God and walk in commandments. It should be simple and forceful so minds are strongly impressed. It is to be presented in meekness and lowliness with tenderness and love even for bitterest enemies and prejudiced, not entering controversies or stirring prejudice but representing Christ's sympathy as learned from His merciful works. In original purity and life-giving power unmixed with error or selfish indulgence, believers show its saving power through genuine goodness, words, actions and Christlike example, so its preserving qualities stand clear and people learn God's requirements. It is to be declared through holy lives and speaking of Saviour's love so people may be saved. It reaches needy through Christ's words spoken again by faithful followers, giving bread of life and waters of salvation. Bringing people to know it is aim of missionary work, and workers are to urge souls to embrace it, leading them to know it and reflecting received light to others, bringing it by both instruction and example as light to searchers.

Living Truth Every Day

Truth learned from him must be brought into the life and woven into character and daily business dealings, testing purposes and governing conduct in purity and integrity. Kept apart from life it has no convicting power and leaves the soul ensnared by Satan's schemes, going blindfold to ruin, while joined to life it keeps by God's power as one strains to leave the world and attain Christ's perfection. Practicing that truth means letting Jesus remove faulty traits shaped by Satan and form Christlike character, being firmly grounded by living according to every word of God with its influence evident in words, manner, voice and actions at all times and in every place.

Obeying the truth purifies the soul and prepares for the mansions Christ has gone to prepare by denying self, taking the cross and following the great Teacher. Knowing the truth requires more than correct creed or inherited faith; it calls for the whole heart given to God in loving self-denying effort that illuminates the soul to do good, enables obedience to God's law and love to God and neighbor, with no excuse from difficulties since God requires nothing impossible. Seventh-day Adventists are called to reveal this preparation to the world, and failure to come to knowledge of that truth and obey the commandments dishonors God.

The truth as it is in Jesus means becoming partakers of the divine nature to escape corruption through lust, to be manifested as true godliness in every line of service. This is to be brought into families for children's salvation and made the education in schools, combining religious culture with general education as the only safety from unsanctified knowledge, impressing its lovely powerful value on young minds to regulate life by God's word unto obedience and service. Constantly beheld and woven into all that is done it brings health to soul and body and beautifies all it touches, and through living faith in Christ's merits the soul is converted and transformed into Christlikeness with angels beside humble daily learners.

Children should be patiently taught to cherish this truth and understand governing laws to live in harmony with heaven and stand before the Redeemer. Parents must first learn in Christ's school to teach children toward salvation, and teachers daily taught by God can bring many to know it and equip them to share its light, with students needing clear Bible evidence so they can serve acceptably in connection with the church as Christ's body.

The truth in Jesus is to be lived and obeyed by manifesting His love in relieving the needy, distressed and suffering with mercy, sympathy and practical aid to break the yoke and set the distressed free. It is not to neglect suffering humanity while exact in tithing mint, rue, anise and cummin, for seeing and serving the poor shut out from truth reflects Christlike character and helps others see truth in Jesus. When those professing Christ practice the golden rule the gospel will have the same power it had in apostolic times.

Representing the truth requires a Christlike disposition in temporal affairs and business, showing industry, frugality and Christlike economy while purging avarice, overreaching and every kind of dishonesty. It is shown by kindness, humbleness of mind, forbearance, generosity, courtesy and singleness of purpose, obeying plain commands to the letter, seeing and relieving the cause's necessities, opposing greed and selfishness, thus exerting salt-like saving influence that represents the kingdom of heaven.

Having learned of Jesus produces constraining love triumphing over the natural heart, seen in dress and spirit appropriate to worship rather than extravagant display. Such learning makes the worshiper a living epistle known and read of all men, lifting from low condition to noble aspirations with the soul wrapped up in God; all professing the gospel light must reveal it by words, spirit and dress with visible change to modest apparel distinguishing him who serves God.

A mother's appointed work is home missionary labor presenting and living the truth with words before her children and not leaving them under demoralizing influences for a larger field. Failure from lack of faith or from not presenting and living that truth may be tried again by other methods with counsel sought from God on the knees.

The truth as it is in Jesus lays solemn responsibility on every believer to represent Him in good works and save souls as living channels of light, speaking of the Saviour's love from a warm heart, telling that God alone forgives sins, scattering Bible truths in papers and books, watching because even the elect may be deceived, and giving present truth to the cities without delay. Giving entrusted means to advance it increases love and is recorded for reward, and worth before God rests not on position but on consecration and faithfulness in humility and faith, with personal effort manifesting Christ's self-denial and self-sacrifice to bring salvation into view.

Every minister must preach the truth as it is in Jesus as a careful messenger under the Spirit with lips sanctified by truth, certain of what is affirmed, refusing new theories and boastful self-exalting words. He must walk carefully so no soul is led into deception by example, since leading one soul astray is worse than never having been born. Instructors must first take heed to themselves, purify their hearts and desire to be filled with the truth in its pure holy sanctifying power, keeping God's ways with conviction and joyful fidelity rather than transmitting superficial vacillating obscure thoughts that dishonor truth and reproduce defects in others.

Workers know the truth only as they live it and give it in Christ's power not self-sufficiency, remaining learners studying Scripture for fresh light. Truth not lived and shared loses life-giving power, while those truly converted bless others, honor God by strengthening fellow workers with only healing words, and proclaim present truth with converting power. Relying on self keeps seekers of the lost from accomplishing much; they must abide in Christ and have the mind of Christ.

God will bring the truth to people in the Roman Catholic communion who serve Him by the light they have but lack His Word and cannot discern between heartfelt service and empty forms, and many will join His people. Receiving it leads the color line to adjust itself, and the whole church should devise ways for high and low, rich and poor in all churches where God has jewels to hear it by lifting up Jesus and showing Christlikeness in humility and love without sweeping denunciation. Wealthy absorbed in worldly things need personal faith-filled effort to awaken spiritual need, and education in commandments and this truth must reach throughout the world without excluding the poor.

The truth must enter the heart and shape life, home and church with active use of God's means and wholehearted work in and through Jesus, with God providing channels for grace. It is to be loved keeping God's love burning, awakening dormant energies to seek the Lord with all the heart, and to be accepted day by day with open minds never feeling all light is already received, resulting in sanctification to the divine likeness and true godliness freeing from selfishness, envy and jealousy. It must be known then practiced heartily at any sacrifice as self-sacrificing witnesses, receiving by seeking the Lord directly rather than looking to human agencies faith that works by love and purifies the soul.

Speaking the truth in love as it is in Jesus means with boldness, certainty, hope and courage not doubt, requiring Jesus abiding in the heart by invitation and watching words and manners as indicators of spiritual health. When stamped on the soul Christ's mind controls every thought, purpose, imagination and plan, giving love for Him and pity for souls, constraining to lay self on God's altar in self-sacrificing missionary labor with eye single to His glory.

Learning from Him in whom truth is found is shown by love for God and fellow believers, copying Christ the perfect Pattern whose ways bring pleasantness and peace, becoming meek and lowly, revealing His character daily and bearing living testimony. Practical knowledge of God through Jesus is the measure of knowing truth as it is in Jesus, learned at the great Teacher's feet by beholding, contemplating, talking of Him with heart aglow, then practicing and teaching that practiced truth. Clinging to the Bible lets its sacred truths purify, ennoble and sanctify, making human wisdom appear foolishness, producing like-mindedness with God in childlike meek humility, forbearing courteous spirit, and refusal of oppressive power over conscience.

The truth as it is in Jesus must be represented by departing from all iniquity with wholehearted service, holding every emotion and thought in subjection to Christ through prayer and living faith since temptation is no excuse and neither earth nor hell can compel sin without consent of the will. It is a wall of fire around the soul that clings to Him by fixed mind and unshaken confidence in His atonement, with Jesus' name driving back temptation; being tempted is no sin but yielding is, and temptations are God's proving revealing the heart. Only such faithful lives with piety, holiness, purity and balanced experimental godliness will stand the judgment and pour light on the world, separating in spirit and action from the world while giving food in due season.

The truth found in Jesus must be both presented and lived, taught by precept and example with Scripture opened to those in error and light flashed on their pathway. A consistent patient life under abuse without retaliation, marked by meekness and forbearance, can influence others to faithfulness, for Christians are watched and those who do not study Scripture may learn belief by observing life. Living it means faith working by love purifying the soul under truth's controlling power, with union and love making truth definite and practical, shaping living and conduct everywhere to glorify God.

Believing the truth produces self-denial, benevolence and liberality, economizing resources to advance the cause and reach regions beyond as stewards for God, while God cannot bless a self-indulgent church. Misrepresenting it credits human merit with salvation, whereas every power, grace, repentance, inclination, pardon and even faith comes from Christ and service is acceptable only when cleansed by His righteousness.

The truth as it is in Jesus is not dry theories or straitjacket legal religion but love of Jesus working outward in meekness, kindliness, patience and gentleness commending itself and melting prejudice. It is life-giving savor of life unto life in contrast to truth held in unrighteousness which is a curse, worth possessing, practicing and defending in self-denial including appetite, requiring thorough conversion and standing on eternal truth contending for the faith once delivered.

God gives light, mental and moral powers, the Spirit, opportunities and His attributes to supply character defects for perfection of character as laborers together with Him, with no work managed in human wisdom and all outward work vain unless God works within until self dies. Truth is searched out by teachable learners with will joined to God's will in living faith, cooperating with divine influence while God works to will and do His pleasure.

Truth is discerned only by perception asked in prayer while consulting the Word, feeding on Christ's words and practicing truth at all times, bringing sanctifying power and eternal life. Scripture is the supreme detector of error deciding all controversies, found by reverent diligent searching with softened heart and above-human wisdom, opened to understanding and applied to heart by God's Spirit rather than by mere reading or by following influential men. It bears the Author's impress to be cherished, requiring giving up even cherished opinions not of God and guidance by the Holy Spirit.

Truth is found in God's Word learned through Jesus, guiding character-building into Christ's likeness, so seeking present truth elsewhere requires renewed conversion with habits mended, evil ways and human ideas abandoned, duties taken up, and Christ beheld step by step even by a cross. That truth is learned step by step by careful study opened by the Lord and confirmed in experience, and disregarding light in His Word leads to losing heaven.

Teaching the truth is joined to seeking fresh grace for wholehearted courageous service as Christ's soldier. Truth is to be practiced not only taught in words, with students learning it by serving the community in practical work like cooking and caring for the sick which softens hearts through witnessing suffering and poverty. It is the gospel lived and acted, prepared for by practical work that carries truth to new places, converts souls, and builds churches, meetinghouses and schools, which God honors.

Having the truth is shown in Christ the great Worker giving time, heart, soul and strength, laboring days and praying nights to meet the foe and uplift humanity, requiring enlarged faith that preserves God's Word which alone moves conscience. Learning in His school makes missionary workers spiritual, prayerful, closely connected with God, with sanctified will and sound judgment, denying self under His yoke and weaving His grace, love, zeal and perseverance into all work. Thorough knowledge of Bible truth thus prepares each receiver of Christ for eternal life.

Lessons God gives to bring believers into close heavenly relation and uproot selfishness are hindered when people are too full of business for religion, and God may save them by stripping riches to poverty. Having the truth means being imbued with Christ's Spirit and fullness of God in meekness with self dead through close communion, unity, wisdom-seeking and prayer, while none knows all Bible truth. It is the binding force joining people to God sufficient to hold mind, control impulse and direct movement, making human binding agreements and centralized controlling power unnecessary and wrong, so every human yoke is to be broken to bind to God and look to Him not men.

All workers in a sanitarium are to live the truth bringing heaven's wisdom and godliness from Christ's grace to lead souls to the water of life. The truth in Jesus is to be represented through institutions that acknowledge Christ as Chief Physician and follow health-reform principles, with rightly conducted sanitariums as beacon lights leading toward conversion. The truth as it is in Jesus is practical spiritual truth that must penetrate people and society by being put into practice and carried to unreached people and places.

The truth as it is in Jesus is found by reading the Bible, so those unable to present truth should seek understanding in their neglected Bible to go with present truth. It is the words of eternal life to be preached and taught in educational work and church schools as a rock foundation, first learned by the teacher in Christ's school with fanaticism left out. Ministers must represent it with consecrated energy, truth abiding in the heart and appetite for Christ, speaking short pointed animated words with living power rather than long cold discourses, with no striving for supremacy.

Knowledge of the truth as it is in Jesus is gained by placing oneself where it can be learned, mining Scripture as hidden treasure, asking God for illumination, and training under capable biblical teaching. Truth must be spoken with Jesus' character in kindness that blesses fellow workers, doing kindly acts, commending good, and never leaving a coworker in doubt or discouragement. The truth as it is in Jesus requires earnest whole-souled study, meaning receiving Christ as Alpha and Omega, and schools need strong-minded Christians who have so received Him.

Believing the truth as it is in Jesus leads people to make it known, just as cherishing unbelief or criticizing the Spirit spreads that spirit. The truth as it is in Jesus is truth brought into the life that converts the soul and sanctifies the heart to bear fruit as branches of the living Vine, while profession that keeps it from life leaves one unconverted as tares to be bound up unless sanctified. Learning from Him belongs to a life of obedience, and teachers as well as students are to be learners in His school growing in love of truth after the divine likeness.

The truth in Jesus is to be imparted to others, with knowers following His example by ministering to the spiritual needs of those who do not know Him. The truth calls believers to unite in love rather than dwell on differences, confessing backsliding and pleading Christ's blood to overcome the enemy. Christian truth is found in Jesus by hearing and being taught by Him, and when cherished in the heart and lived out it saves, shapes character, adorns with holy conversation and kindly words, and wins family members by holy life.

Having the truth as it is in Jesus brings a sense of personal danger and responsibility, requiring help from on high, strict self-judgment, shunning worldliness, and pleading Christ's righteousness as example with entire dependence on Christ and doing God's will from the heart. A sanctified life declares the truth that is in Jesus, including that God alone forgives sins and the good news of the Saviour's love. That truth sanctifies believers to plant living saving faith, fulfill baptismal vows, follow Christ's ministering example, and impart His love in self-denying medical missionary work.

The truth as it is in Jesus is not mere knowledge but truth in practical life, proved by not domineering over or excluding fellow ministers but showing Scriptural love that melts the frozen heart. It must be made to appear as truth by practical godliness, decisive choice for the Lord, and immediate refuge in the stronghold, knowing Christ pleads as Advocate and the Holy Ghost beholds the course. When the heart is sanctified by the truth found in Jesus, a person speaks words that bring life rather than death.

Those who receive the truth found in Jesus through faith and share Christ's love are appointed to make it known and work with Christ in saving souls. Learning of Jesus means becoming like Him, necessary preparation for missionary work. When truth is presented as it is in Jesus, Phariseeism, strife for supremacy and selfish pride are put away and there is growth in Christ's graces. God's wholly surrendered people work together to share the truth given to the world as truth in Jesus. Living the truth means making the representation God wants before angels and men, revealing the value of Christ's righteousness through helpful words, purity of action, and nobility of principle.
