Roman Soldier in Armor Holding Shield and Swordby KandD

Ephesians 6:13

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Wherefore the command is to take the whole armor of God in order to be able to withstand in the evil day, and after having done all that is required to keep standing firm in spiritual warfare.
The whole armor is truth, righteousness, the preparation of the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the word of God, with praying always, watchfulness and perseverance, and no piece may be left off.
The strength to stand is not in self, human power, wisdom or organization, but in the Lord and the power of His might received through Christ by those who know their utter inability.
The withstanding is not against flesh and blood or fellow believers, but against the devil, principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world and spiritual wickedness in high places.
The evil day is the present continuing conflict with seen and unseen foes until the close of history, including solemn testing, persecution, deception and the final crisis, so the armor must be taken daily and kept on continually by obedience, prayer, faith and watchfulness.

Meaning of Command

The command is to take up the whole armor of God in order to be able to withstand in the evil day and, after having done all that is required, to keep standing firm in spiritual warfare against Satan and darkness. The withstanding is not against flesh and blood or human beings but against the devil and his wiles, principalities and powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places. The armor to be taken is complete with no piece left off, comprising truth about the loins, the breastplate of righteousness, feet shod with preparation of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith to quench fiery darts, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God, joined with praying always, watchfulness and perseverance. The gospel is the believer's defense and sufficiency, and standing firm in difficult fields also requires removing inherited or cultivated traits that Satan could exploit and letting Christ's Spirit govern speech and mental, physical and moral powers, lest those traits bring defeat when victory is needed.

Having done all means having done all on one's part to cooperate with God and then to stand, striving to do everything possible to gain victory in the Lord. It means having obeyed the instruction given by the Lord through His servants, and heeded in camp-meeting work it brings wonderful victories. It requires being strong in the Lord and in the power of His might and not in self, self-confidence or self-sufficiency, abiding in Christ with constantly increasing growth in grace and knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, without which one is not fit for the work, especially in positions of responsibility and trust demanding deeper piety, more earnest faith and more zeal as a witness of His grace. Resistance must be intelligent and understanding, making the Word of God the counselor and defense, and above all taking the shield of intelligent faith to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked from whatever source, with spiritual consciousness strengthened by continual increasing faith, looking to God continually, pleading His assurance, and hanging the helpless soul in humility upon invisible power on the ground of having taken the armor.

Having done all means doing all that Christ commands in the Old Testament and the New Testament, standing on guard over self lest evil agencies warring against believers succeed in leading to words and deeds that please the enemy. It includes putting off the corrupt old man, being renewed in the spirit of the mind, putting on the new man created in righteousness and true holiness, putting away lying and speaking truth, being angry without sin and not letting anger remain, giving no place to the devil, working honestly to give to the needy, letting no corrupt communication proceed from the mouth but only what edifies and ministers grace, not grieving the Holy Spirit, putting away bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, evil speaking and malice, and being kind, tenderhearted and forgiving as God for Christ's sake forgave, so that words and deeds are fragrant with the holiness of truth. It means holding fast integrity in trials in little things and showing only a noble spirit, keeping Christlike dignity and self-control with no inconsistency between faith and practice by doing just as Christ would do in one's place. Having done all means having met every provocation, petty vexation, discourtesy and scorn with manful resistance in the battles of the Lord, so as to remain standing in a watched battle with all the universe of heaven watching the result while Satan watches to catch the believer off guard and stirred to impetuous words and spirit, to gain advantage to sift him as wheat, pleasing the enemy and grieving heavenly angels.

The struggle includes resisting wrong tendencies within oneself as well as opposition from those close to oneself, after doing all that the Spirit of God teaches in order to fight the good fight of faith. The fight includes resisting enemies within one's own household and one's hereditary and cultivated tendencies, with watchfulness and prayer needed because the human heart is wayward. Standing means keeping integrity and Christlike self-control through trials and provocation rather than letting Satan gain advantage through impetuous words or actions, with strength through Christ who gives wisdom, righteousness and grace, letting heaven shape mind and heart so as to remain faithful. It means cutting off sentimental and unsanctified affections, placing undivided affections upon God, wholly denouncing soul-deceiving and soul-tarnishing sympathy, refusing to gratify self and parley with Satan and invite temptation on weakest points, not neglecting prayer, and seeking uplifting influences that refine, ennoble and fit for sacred trusts, because continuing to gratify self leaves religion like sliding sand with no foundation, easily swept over by storm of trial or tempest and swept away from the truth with loss of the soul.

Even after doing everything required believers must continue to stand firm in truth and righteousness, for the church is still militant, not yet triumphant. Every believer must be prepared for battle against satanic powers and not merely against other people, putting on and keeping every part of God's armor with no piece left off, watching over the soul and allowing the Holy Spirit to develop character and perfect holiness, with Jesus Christ as Leader. They are to withstand spiritual conflict including discouragement, opposition and false accusations, endure patiently for Christ, keep fighting the Lord's battles, and be ready to face another conflict, trusting God and moving forward in faith under His leadership. The armor is not laid aside until the Master calls the work to an end, while God's servants remain submissive to His will and ready to take up duty, not abandoning the battle or laying down the armor before the Lord releases them but persevering to the end and remaining faithful.

This applies to enduring apostasy and the efforts of false teachers to draw disciples away after facing trials and disappointments and doing all that is required. Standing is part of the lifelong struggle that follows conversion, requiring maintaining Christian integrity, resisting discouragement, and holding fast confidence in God to the end. Conversion does not finish salvation; the race must still be run in lifelong warfare with no release, demanding determined energy proportionate to eternal life, making Christ the dependence under otherwise unbearable trials, maintaining Christian integrity to the last, not murmuring against God, not becoming discouraged and casting away confidence, neglecting no means of grace, and encouraging the soul to believe and trust in the Lord Jesus as the only hope. Those who take part in vindicating the law of God must put on the whole armor to fight manfully against Satan's untiring energy against the law as His witnesses pressing the battle to the gates, in a war with no release where the work must advance or go backward.

God's faithful workmen are enlisted soldiers who must not throw off their armor but wear it till the end, serving till the close of the battle and laying it at His feet only when the Lord releases them, with perseverance in the strange great work God gives linking heart and soul together on the pilgrimage of this life toward heaven as home with faith that God does not forsake, while deserting before the end disgraces the soldier and dishonors God. Life is a continual conflict against tireless forces and foes needing strength in Christ to overcome countless temptations, otherwise to be overcome with loss of soul, and the work Christ has entrusted must be completed in this life because a second probation will not be granted. This standing is joined with following Christ, remaining separate from the world, and enduring faithfully to the end against the devil and spiritual powers.

Enemy and Warfare

The withstanding and holding of ground is not against flesh and blood, human opponents, or fellow worshipers, but against the devil and his schemes, principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places. The full equipment of truth, righteousness, readiness from the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, God's word, and persevering prayer is what makes that standing possible after doing all that duty requires. The struggle is spiritual evil met only in God's strength against Satan and his emissaries.

The conflict is between Christ as substitute, surety, Captain, Leader and Commander and Satan with fallen angels in a vast confederacy of evil over souls for an eternal invisible world. Believers stand under the blood-stained banner of Prince Emmanuel and Prince Immanuel, sharing His conflicts and struggles and waging determined war shoulder to shoulder against the powers of darkness. The same wrestling Christ bore in descending step by step in humility, pursued by the enemy, is also their work, and in it they are barricaded by the Ten Commandments so that by doing them they live in them. Christ leads in battle and renews the strength of every faithful soldier, and with supernatural assistance human weakness does the deeds of Omnipotence while the whole universe of God is marshalled behind the Commander for those who faithfully obey. Those loved by God and delivered from darkness into the kingdom of His Son must therefore be strong and not feeble and wavering tossed like waves of the sea, dead to self and hidden in Jesus without disparaging one another, facing difficulties bravely with unswerving principle unto a crown of life.

Satan leaves no means untried to deceive and turn people from the right course, coming where they are least guarded and keeping them continually under fire where much is at stake for truth. He watches going out and coming in to find opportunity to hurt or destroy, works most successfully in darkness against those ignorant of his devices, looks for a weak spot to tempt into sin, and gains no advantage when his method of attack is understood. He hunts with great power because his time is short, yet also comes in deceptive disguise wrapped in garments of light as an angel of light, using both open threats and whispers to catch the unprepared. Guarding the mind, treasuring truth, walking humbly, watching every point to keep the fort, and holding God's commandments written in heart and mind are the way to stand ready at any moment through the whole battle.

Going to that battle without the equipment through presumption leaves one exposed, grievously wounded, insensible to the wound, soothed, charmed and fascinated under a fatal spell in Satan's power. Parleying and reasoning on forbidden ground and indulging doubt and unbelief while enshrouded in unbelief attracts evil angels and drives holy angels away. Steadfast resistance in the Lord's strength rather than self-confidence, with determined effort, deep heart preparation, prayer and faith, and with several going together shielded by strong angels, breaks every fetter, drives back the spiritual foe, and brings closer to God in triumph. Choosing one's own course and separating from angelic help exposes one to the wicked one, while working in harmony with God's angels and refusing needless danger as Christ did keeps the standing secure.

The struggle includes inward contention where unbelief battles with faith as well as outward deception, doubt and confusion, and it contends for the usefulness or life of the godly to mar peace as long as they live. Opposing forces arise within household and heart, even enemies in one's own household, and victory in that fight is ensured only by the free Spirit of God. Taking the equipment therefore means closing every door against Satan's entrance, giving him no place, living in the family so he can take no advantage of anything said or done, guarding against attack, and relying on the merits of Christ's blood and saving strength with earnest unyielding faith. Though he heats the furnace, Jesus and angels watch the trusting so only dross burns and true metal is unhurt, and when darkness gathers and hope seems to fail, standing means trusting the atonement alone, swallowing the will in God's will, and pleading for patience and grace to overcome rather than removal of trial, which never ends in perishing.

Because the warfare is not with men, workers must not war against brethren, form a hollow square to aim missiles of destruction at fellow servants under the same banner, spend strength picking flaws, or wound and tear down one another. They must not be drawn into controversy and debate over questions of Bible truth, join issue with the wily deceiver, meet Satan with human argument or presumptuous ventures to prove position impregnable, but must do the work given them, point weapons outward, and answer error with Scripture. God protects those doing His assigned work and defending revealed truth and His law as Paul did, and fitness to stand requires new birth and sanctification through practicing truth found in Old and New Testaments under the eye of Jehovah in full view of seraphim and cherubim. Alertness in the present battle against forces opposing God keeps the brave soldier from turning arms inward.

The stand is also required against opposition from unconsecrated professed followers who claim Christ yet lend talents and ability to the enemy and are used by him to hinder God's work.

Pieces of Armor

The whole armor to be taken is truth about the loins, the breastplate of righteousness, feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith to quench all the fiery darts, the helmet of salvation or hope of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God, joined with praying always, watchfulness, perseverance and supplication. No piece is to be left off, and one or two pieces are not enough, for the struggle is against the devil and his wiles, principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places, not merely against human enemies. Taking it all enables withstanding in the evil day and, after doing all that is required, remaining standing firm in spiritual conflict.

Having the loins girt about with truth means purity of purpose to serve the Lord Jesus Christ and not self. Truth as armor guards against fiction, false interpretations and fables, and strengthens against temptation from within and without as a sentinel in the heart. It must become settled, intelligent, fixed conviction and living experience, not merely inherited religion, with the Word made counselor and defense and resistance intelligent and understanding.

The breastplate is Christ's divinely provided righteousness as personal Saviour, not one's own, received by faith and expressed in right conduct, personal piety, righteous principles, rectitude in every action, harmony with natural law, and putting away sin because God hates it. It fortifies the soul against moral darkness and Satan's devices, wards off darts, and protects spiritual life, and laying it aside leaves one exposed to temptation and to fall under its power. Humble trust in God and cheerful obedience to Christ's life and words irrespective of the world's opinion, refusing conformity to its customs, improving every religious privilege, and inquiring of God daily, are as essential as they were to Gideon, assuring the presence and protection of the Captain of the Lord's host. This steadfastness in principle resisting every corruption distinguishes those bearing the seal of the living God from those receiving the mark of the beast.

Feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace is the believer's defense and sufficiency. It calls for going among people in darkness from house to house and from place to place rather than remaining inactive at home, carrying truth and proclaiming the third angel's message. In daily conduct it means approaching no one harshly or angrily and walking humbly before God whatever the place of service, keeping close to the Lord, holding to the standard, and praying and striving for victory.

The shield of faith quenches all the fiery darts of the wicked from whatever source they come and guards the heart as the seat of life. It must be living, abiding, exercised, active, settled and intelligent, a stablished belief that God knows all the trials and difficulties of the warfare and is near to strengthen and uphold with everlasting strength. Unbelief dishonors God by belittling His power and talking unbelief, while feelings and sentimentalism give no protection, and faith tested like gold in fire must watch, hold up the shield, and trust God's protection so the wicked one cannot harm.

The sword of the Spirit and God's Word, with truth and faith, is the weapon against evil, to be given even to children and hidden in the heart. Used as Christ used it to meet the foe, it trains the soul to meet Satan's attacks, recognize his devices, overcome temptation, and gain keen perception for stronger attacks. Studying it strengthens believers and settles them in truth so that, having done all, they can stand, and the Holy Spirit uses the Scriptures to strengthen understanding and resistance under persecution and to keep Jesus and God's requirements in view.

The whole gospel armor is Jesus Christ Himself and His righteousness, the armor of truth found in His Word and the equipment of His word. Taking it is hiding in Him, being surrounded by His righteousness as a garment, kept so the wicked one cannot harass or confuse faith, with His peace as legacy left to believers. Though the armor seems too weighty to be borne, He is the strength that carries it, and the battle the sufferer cannot actively fight can be entrusted to Jesus who fights for them, while truth as it is in Jesus planted in the heart and nourished by the holy oil, with loving protection of the Saviour as sure defense against Satan's schemes, makes one humble and teachable rather than dictatorial and able to overcome temptation and powers of darkness.

Taking the armor requires praying always with earnest persevering prayer for the Holy Spirit, His anointing and baptism, watching over the soul, letting the Spirit develop character to holiness, and refusing to become so busy that there is no time to pray.

Evil Day Described

The evil day is the present continuing conflict that lasts until the closing events of history, when seen and unseen foes must be met and confederacies against the Lord of hosts, formed by satanic agencies working in human form in every city with professed saints and open unbelievers organized in opposition to God's law, continue until Christ ends His intercession before the mercy seat to put on vengeance. For that reason there is no time to be weak or off guard for a moment, but to be strong, constantly guarded, spiritually ready and steadfast rather than living a weak, half-awake, haphazard life until victory. Taking the complete armor conquers all foes met, including foes not yet developed, amid constantly changing scenes, confederacies increasing in number and power, opposing influences, delusive theories, growing apostasy, and the last great conflict in which satanic agencies in human form oppose the building of the kingdom while heavenly angels in human guise are on the field, the two parties continuing till the close of history.

It is orders to soldiers for the time of the end, when successive scenes crowd together to bring Christ revealed in the clouds with power and great glory. Readiness to stand in the day of the Lord means standing firm wholly on His side in harmony with heaven's work of preparing a people to stand, with loins girded and lamps burning, clothed with Christ's righteousness with inherited and cultivated evil tendencies removed as character is remade, awake and courageous amid deceptions and receiving heaven's light and power, without gloom or sadness. The evil day includes solemn testing and sifting just before the close of history and the Lord's soon coming, when every case is decided for eternity and the unjust are found among the just. Those who received great light but refused to live by it will have darkness corresponding to the light they despised, while only the pure in heart whose works correspond to the light given will be counted on the Lord's side, which requires not folding the hands or sleeping but waiting, watching, vigilantly working to save souls, strengthening the mind, purifying the soul-temple by truth, disciplining character to God's standard, and heroic determination when rulers offer no protection.

The closing time came after the midnight cry and the shutting of the door in 1844, when Jesus is soon to step out from between God and humanity and the sealing is to be finished. It is a fearful time at Christ's coming as in the days of Noah, when men have resisted the Spirit until He is less and less manifest in the earth and angels fold their wings and cease their watchcare, when it is too late for wrongs to be righted and no prayer or word of peace will prevail for rejecters of light. Putting on the whole armor while probation continues keeps from drifting down the current of worldly iniquity to be swallowed up with destruction, enables resisting evil with Christ's help, facing Satan come down in great power knowing his time is short with the commandments written in heart and mind to go on strong and bold and hold up the commandments and the testimony though opposition is many and tall, so as to be hidden in trouble such as never was and ready to meet the Lord in peace.

The evil day brings persecution for faithfully serving God according to conscience, when motives are impugned, best efforts misinterpreted, and names cast out as evil. It brings a religious-liberty crisis of laws compelling worship according to human opinions, with earthly and satanic powers united to oppress God's people, including the Sunday movement to be met by putting on the whole armor through working, watching and praying with humbled hearts, crying aloud, proclaiming boldly as laborers together with God, and standing for the faith of Jesus, God's law, and religious liberty while leaving the Lord to accomplish His work. Withstanding then requires moral courage, firmness, and knowledge of God and His word amid hostility, false accusation, distorted judgment, and efforts to make evil appear good and good evil.

The evil day includes Satan's lying wonders more fully exhibited, with the sick healed and miracles performed that will tempt many to receive them as from God, together with spiritualistic deceptions and error overspreading the earth while Satan himself works miracles before the people. Many will be ensnared and taken because by departing from the plain precepts and commandments of God and giving heed to fables their minds are prepared to receive these lying wonders. Unless grounded in truth, refusing to be influenced by whatever the enemy presents as truth and remaining under God's instruction as the great Author of truth, they cannot stand; the armor is faith in God's word prayerfully studied and practically applied as a shield from Satan's power, with watching, trust in God's protection, the shield of faith, reliance on the Lord's strength rather than self, steadfast resistance, determined effort, prayer and faith, and victory through Christ's blood, for going without armor onto forbidden ground in presumption, parleying, reasoning, and indulging doubt attracts evil angels and leaves one wounded, charmed and fascinated, while going with the armor in united prayer and faith brings shielding by strong angels that breaks fetters and drives back the foe.

Preparation to stand in the battle on the day of God includes using every opportunity and means to win people to love God and keep His commandments, drawing nearer to God, obeying the whole truth, purifying the soul, and gaining victory over pride, selfishness, love of the world, and every wrong word and action, for only holy beings can dwell in God's presence. The refreshing or latter rain will not make up for neglected preparation, and when probation closes and the final declaration fixes each condition with plagues falling, there will be no time to make preparation and no Mediator to plead for the unprepared. The full armor is needed to withstand the dangers of the evil day and remain standing pure from evil and lust amid the perils and corruption of the age, and people are unready when they lack the armor of righteousness and fail to obey all God's commandments. Keeping every piece on and standing awake as a faithful watchman is required in a time of confusion upon confusion, accidents by sea and land, increasing crime, corrupt and untrustworthy officials, and withdrawal of the Spirit from nations that have discarded God's Word for false theories and false laws exalted above His commandments, as signs fulfilling show the end near, with the individual work of fitting to sound the last message of warning and preparing the church so those who had light are awake for the closing scenes soon to come.

Strength From God

The strength to stand in the evil day is not in self, not in self-confidence or self-sufficiency, not in human strength, might, courage, knowledge, arguments, organizations or institutions, but in the Lord and in the power of His might supplied through His Son. Those who are weak in themselves stand by relying wholly on God with a heartfelt consciousness of utter inability, sustained by His everlasting strength with ministering angels near to strengthen and uphold. The armor is God's provision for spiritual health and power, and obeying the instruction given through His servants, cooperating with divine power, and looking steadfastly to Jesus bring victory over the adversary without fear of Satan's strength. Faith and prayer arm against deceptions and spiritual powers, for unbelief dishonors God by belittling His power, while settled belief that He knows every trial and difficulty honors Him.

Taking the armor requires knowing self and proving motives and desires again and again until there is heartfelt consciousness of inability to fight the Lord's battles in own strength. It means seeing and realizing the weakness and depravity of men, putting entire trust in God rather than in men, and being aroused and not ignorant of Satan's devices. It requires knowing well one's own character, the sin that most easily besets, and the temptations most likely to overcome, faithfully examining motives, principles and actions by the standard of duty revealed in God's word, and not exposing oneself needlessly by standing on the enemy's ground. With loins girt about with truth there is purity of purpose to serve Christ and not self, and with the shield of faith all the fiery darts are quenched.

Standing firm follows Christ's example, for though tempted as humanity is He resisted and stood where Adam fell, and He offers strength and salvation to those who receive Him. God's requirements are possible because divine grace has power to subdue even outbursts of passion and to express itself in personal piety, righteous principles, right conduct and rectitude in every action. In striving against personal inclinations the Holy Spirit helps believers gain the victory, and the righteousness of Christ worn as a breastplate protects spiritual life in harmony with the laws of nature. People can stand against Satan only in Christ's strength, for when humanity yielded He stood between the living and the dead, accepting the punishment in humanity's place and giving another chance.

With Christ's help those who meet His conditions overcome, relying on Jesus as Advocate and becoming impregnable to Satan's darts. Christ leads His people in battle and renews the strength of every faithful soldier, and they do not fight alone because Christ and the angels are with them and Christ has overcome the world. They can resist the deceiver and stand on vantage ground, but they continue to stand only by holding to Christ and following where He leads. Earnest prayer and living faith in this conflict bring great victories and at last a crown of life to those who face difficulties bravely with unswerving principle and willing obedience.

Taking the armor means complying with the prescribed conditions and laying hold of the help provided. It means talking confidence in Jesus Christ rather than talking and thinking and magnifying the power of Satan, since Christ is a living Saviour who will complete the redeeming work His death began. Standing in this armor means holding to active faith that works through love and purifies the soul, representing Christ rather than a harsh, domineering spirit. It means letting peace and righteousness and love fill the heart through the sanctifying power of truth, engaging in aggressive warfare not against brethren but against satanic agencies, refusing faultfinding, criticizing self closely, and seeking more knowledge of Christ.

God gives a divine armor that Satan wants to strip away, setting every conceivable power at work through the father of lies to discourage and make fainthearted the chosen of God. To keep it and stand requires trusting Jesus like a little child, doing what can be done as an instrument in the hand of a Master Workman without worry, staying cheerful, and finding daily rest and peace close by Jesus rather than trying to bear constant strain. Keeping it is letting the light shine instead of making it shine, with Jesus doing the shining, and letting the righteousness of Christ surround as a garment, with all knowledge and wisdom received from the Holy One who will not fail nor be discouraged.

The gospel armor is not too weighty when Christ Himself is the believer's armor. Taking it is hiding in Him, and hidden in Him the person is kept so the wicked one cannot harass or confuse faith. The battle that a suffering believer cannot actively fight can be entrusted to Jesus, who fights for them, and the protection includes the peace Jesus has left as His legacy.

Taking and Keeping Armor

Taking the whole armor is required of everyone who names Christ, so that each may stand in the evil day and, having done all, keep standing as a successful co-laborer with Christ, and this calls for repeated self-examination over whether one is clothed with the whole armor. The battle cannot be fought in human strength, for the wrestling is not against flesh and blood but against the devil's wiles, principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places, and the more one knows self and proves motives and desires the deeper becomes the heartfelt consciousness of utter inability and the need to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Resistance must be intelligent and understanding, with the Word of God as counselor and defense, and above all with the shield of settled, intelligent faith that quenches every fiery dart from whatever source, resting in established belief that God knows all trials and difficulties in the warfare against evil and stays near to strengthen and uphold with everlasting strength. Unbelief dishonors God by belittling His power, while faith refuses dependence on broken reeds and human aid and refuses to place man where God should be, hanging the helpless soul in humility upon invisible power on the ground of having taken the armor. Loins girt about with truth gives purity of purpose to serve Christ and not self, and following the directions for the armor leads to humble, careful work that does not bind others to human plans or lord it over God's people, since such domination endangers both ruler and ruled.

Readiness does not arise suddenly when final trials come, but self-denial and willingness to bear the cross must shape daily life and be taught to children by word and example. Daily time given to prayer, meditation, Scripture study, and communion with God connects the soul with heaven, gives sanctified boldness to enter within the veil, ennobles character, brings clearer understanding of truth and duty, and imparts a saving, transforming influence with desire for purity and heavenly virtues. Putting on the armor includes fighting one's own battles, praying, communing with God, keeping watch over the soul, and drawing near to God so He draws near to uphold against the enemy and to help recognize sin and turn to Christ. Faith in God is itself armor and His word is weapon, giving inner power to resist temptation, and when needed fasting joins prayer to strengthen faith for victory over Satan's oppression. Constant prayer and watching guard against old habits and natural inclinations in the daily conflicts of the Christian life, and each person must personally take up the full armor to withstand evil and remain standing after doing all that is required.

Preparation requires an individual experience in the truth of God's Word, living communion with God, and consecrated service in doing all God requires, set against real spiritual powers and wickedness that demand power from above. This readiness rests on daily conversion, humility, and unquestioning trust in Him who has all power and will not abandon His people, enabling them to face enemies in Jesus' strength, faithfully perform duties, and remain alert and active rather than passive with a clear living witness. The armor cannot be borrowed or transferred, and no one can wear another's shoes for him, for each must have his own living experience through sanctification of the truth, remaining one with Christ and His little ones, learning of Him continually. Each must stand before God alone, having on the whole armor and having done all, to stand, and in that individual standing alone is independence found, while in all other labor workers remain dependent and must maintain reciprocal relation and cooperation.

Taking the armor requires practicing the Word rather than standing with the world, for without practicing it no blessing and cooperation with efforts can be expected, and the mind must be cleared from selfish indulgence in eating, drinking, and dressing. It requires refusing to imitate men and imitating Christ instead, refusing scheming, confederating, underhand working, untruthful practices and corrupt business dealing, refusing to be fashioned by the world's criterion, keeping perceptive faculties awake, and holding integrity and loyalty to God and one another by doing to others as one would be done by and committing no injustice for advantage. Careless words and unreserved attachment to worldly interests weaken resistance and can lead away from Christ, so believers must give themselves wholly to God and turn from love of the world, since friendship with the world is opposed to God. When worldly cares crowd out self-examination and secret prayer the armor is laid aside, leaving Satan free to dull the senses and make people unaware of his traps. Practical separation from the world and from popular churches, refusing to copy worldly fashions and customs in dress, buildings, and display, is how God's people stand face to face with the foe in the strength of God-given truth, which is as much more powerful than worldly customs as the heavens are higher than the earth for proclaiming the gospel to a world dead in trespasses and sins.

Putting on the armor means actively fighting the good fight of faith and using God's appointed means to war against unholy lust. It means resisting selfish gratification and putting away picture-idols that stand between the soul and God and do nothing to spread the truth. Partial obedience and failure to overcome leave defects open to temptation that can gain supremacy, so the heart, motives, desires, and habits must be pressed toward the full standard of righteousness in conformity to Christ's will. It means laying off the pugilistic armor and temper of the natural heart and putting on Christ's righteousness, never acting out the natural heart nor working in finite individuality, for when one works in self the angels stand back and leave that person to carry on the warfare alone. It means cutting off sentimental unsanctified affections, placing undivided affections upon God, wholly denouncing soul-deceiving sympathy, refusing to gratify self and parley with Satan and invite temptation on weakest points, not neglecting prayer, and seeking uplifting influences that refine and fit for sacred trusts, since continued self-gratification leaves religion like sliding sand with no foundation, easily swept by storm and tempest away from truth with loss of the soul.

Every piece is essential and none is to be cast away on entering battle, for safety in battle comes only by being armed and equipped with the whole armor, not a little part of it. Increased responsibility requires preserving connection with God, humbling the soul in contrition before Him every day, and serving with heart and strength in the channel of light in view of the holy character of the work, and like a general going into battle workers must not throw away weapons of warfare nor cease piety and devotion as duties grow. Partly meeting the standard or failing to overcome leaves defects of character able to gain control and lets evil triumph, so determination and perseverance against every spiritual foe are required. Stern battles must be fought against determined foes, with Satan disputing every step of advance toward heaven and coming to destroy, and spiritual strength and courage to stand are gained not by having one's own will and way but by following the will and way of Jesus as Leader and obeying His orders. Faith will be tested severely, so every piece must be kept on at all times to endure.

Safety is assured only when the whole armor is kept on continually, working and sleeping in readiness, for light and darkness, truth and error, righteousness and unrighteousness never harmonize and allow no compromise or fellowship. Christians must keep the armor on and be ready for battle at all times and in all places. It must be kept on continually to withstand spiritual opposition, including professed Adventists advocating error and definite time and trying to turn others against the faith. Keeping every piece on guards amid teachings that undermine truth and distract from what gives spiritual strength, helping believers remain Christians and stay prepared for the coming of the Son of Man. Neglecting private devotion is like laying it off and leaving one open to snares, while vigilance and readiness clothed in all the armor enable standing firm in time of danger.

Taking the whole armor means drilling like soldiers on a drill ground to be ready for actual service when needed, with earnest, painstaking, thorough preparation for spiritual warfare against tradition, superstition, and error. It means drilling day after day until ready for any emergency and for actual service at call, taking part in the drill and educating oneself in all duties of the army, learning to obey before being fitted to command. Training for games does not prepare faithful soldiers of Christ for spiritual conflict and victory. Taking God's power as dependence and His grace as strength, seeking clear conceptions of duty by Scripture study and earnest prayer and then faithfully performing it, trains the mind beforehand through daily tests and faithfulness in little things, since little everyday incidents shape character and form habits of integrity for greater responsibilities, and every event of life is great for good or evil. In days of trial and peril this fortifies one to stand firmly for the right independent of every opposing influence. Standing demands a sharp eye on the adversary and on self, for security depends on the state of the heart and taking heed to self, guarding against little departures from right and little indulgences that seem trifling yet lead on a track separating from righteousness and from God to loss of heaven, wanting not one's own ways but God's ways and striving with all powers of being to bruise Satan underfoot, to be right with God, and to have clear title to the immortal inheritance. Continual watchfulness, prayer, and reliance on God guard purity, since circumstances can gradually weaken the soul unless divine power keeps it.

The armor is put on by cooperating with God in keeping from evil practices, by watching unto prayer, watching and praying not to enter into temptation, not taking the first step in a wrong course, and letting the Lord be strength and helper. With Christ abiding in the heart and trust in God, nothing in the world can change the heart, and there is no fear even if the earth shakes and pillars tremble, giving an intelligent faith like Daniel and his fellow captives in Babylon, whose faith could not be changed, whose principles could not be corrupted, and whose affections could not be separated from God and His love. Youth lack training for this when they try to uplift themselves and rely on own strength instead of depending on the Holy Spirit to strengthen and empower for the Lord's battles. Taking the whole gospel armor means standing firm after weakening, being true to one another and to God, letting fidelity mark all work, not striving for highest place or seeking to be first, but seeking to represent most accurately the truth for this time. It is the duty of every soul to have spiritual strength for given duties by constantly trusting Christ to supply needs, going forward in the strength of His might while helping the weak, looking to Him for orders and obeying His commands, and by that obedience receiving wisdom to see clearly the wiles, devices, and stratagems of the enemy to deceive and ruin.

When weariness, discouragement, and failure come in strife against internal foes, the armor must be girded on anew to face defects of character seen when the heart is viewed as God views it, for the heart is deceptive and desperately wicked. Putting it on again means arising with eternal life in view and toiling on to gain it by persistent energy, patient industry, unwearied effort and untiring zeal, by personal effort and in penitence and repentance through faith in Christ's grace to conquer self and perfect the heart, which is washing the robe of character white in the blood of the Lamb. Perseverance, courage, and watchfulness distinguish those who gain the prize through renewed persistent effort rather than yielding to discouragement.

Work and Witness

Taking the armor is especially required of ministers, that they may live exemplary lives before members and younger workers, walk in the light as Christ is in the light, hold to the Man of Calvary, discern and give the messages due at this time with a certain trumpet sound lest souls sleep unto loss, since Satan directs special artful power against preachers and publishers of present truth, and the evil day is now amid the closing scenes of history in a wrestling not against flesh and blood but against principalities, powers, rulers of darkness and spiritual wickedness in high places.
Keeping every piece on is required of ministers and servants to withstand attacks, for laying aside part or exposing sacred truths to reproach exposes weakest points to poisoned arrows, weakens the cause and gives enemies triumph, and they must defend truth even at cost of life rather than go unarmed without sincere prayer, true faith and the Spirit of Christ with hands hung down, trusting own judgment while the enemy guides judgment, which blinds discernment, blocks living water and shuts out heaven's light in lukewarmness.
The command calls Seventh-day Adventists to be strong in the Lord and ready like Nehemiah against attempts to frighten, weaken work, deceive through false counsel and tempt to sin for reproach, for the enemy mingles evil with every good work if workers are not on guard, and to stand against the wiles of the devil leaving no piece aside, holding Bible truth and God's law, resisting errors and man-made tests, guarding the foundation of the third angel's message which is the gospel of peace, righteousness and truth, and proclaiming present truth with increasing power unmoved by misplaced prophecies.
Members of home churches seldom visited when ministers go abroad must take the whole armor and stand firmly for truth, putting on the gospel shoes for a trembling, soft, humble approach to souls to lead them to the Saviour, walking from house to house carrying truth, selling or giving literature, teaching neighbors, warning neighborhoods, cities and villages, keeping close to the Lord, holding the standard, praying and striving for victory, going among people in darkness rather than remaining inactive, walking with Christ and relying on His righteousness by faith with active exercised faith as shield.
Taking the armor means going forth into needy fields rather than staying in overworked places where remaining gathers crowds, loses faith and sacrifices foundation truth, entering every unentered place with earnest labor bringing souls to embrace truth and convicting about the Sabbath through the Holy Spirit turning transgression to righteousness and obedience, hunting and fishing for men with perseverance as those waiting for the Lord in clouds knowing the message will win hearts, laboring in cities and open-air meetings boldly yet with propriety and sound sense clothed with righteousness, sanctified by truth to receive needed help, proclaiming the final warning to those without light.
Physicians, nurses and medical missionary workers must take the whole armor to withstand in the evil day and stand, preparing to meet God and quitting themselves as brave soldiers against wiles not of flesh and blood, putting on every piece through moment-by-moment trust in Jesus rather than personal strength, girding on with reverence not carelessness, kept by God's power, fitted through trial, cleansed by the Lamb's blood, relying on God's wisdom under the third angel's banner, persevering in faith with awake repentant converted hearts under God's control imbued with power from on high, the standing itself being practical medical missionary work testifying to sanctifying truth.
For young women in sanitariums keeping the armor means girding and keeping on heavenly armor for moral protection in daily work by strict guard over self in word and action, being reserved, modest, kind and courteous but never free especially toward married men, abstaining from every appearance of evil and giving wicked men no occasion to speak evil of truth, because observant eyes judge whether workers are children of God and the sanitarium is a haven where shipwrecked souls must find safety, so those who will not keep it must sever connection.
Parents must put on the whole armor and gird for battle in managing and training children by studying and obeying God's Word and bringing home rules and discipline into strict accord with Thus saith the Lord and church order in harmony with the divine plan, standing firm in right in trustful dependence so God aids every right movement and cooperates where human effort joins divine effort, teaching children by example to be missionaries with unselfish persevering effort to bear responsibilities and practice Bible lessons unto conversion, salvation and rapid growth in faith, prayer and knowledge.
Youth need every piece to resist the tempter and overcome folly and wickedness around them, choosing to stand under Emmanuel's banner by knowing God and Christ with mind filled and kept in touch with Him so intellect works with God, fighting manfully not by human strength, keeping heart and mind subject to God's will with eyes fixed on Jesus, for turning from Him brings self-interest and carnal reasoning that makes the armor seem too hard, and abandoning principle to fit irreligious companions throws away protection just when most needed, while preparation should begin even before birth.
Students live in enemy territory and must expect difficulty, putting on the whole armor provided through the Son as ransom, relying on God not self, choosing principle, surrendering will, obeying right and forming character for heaven, and colleges must equip with earthly and heavenly armor above all to equip themselves, giving youth in Battle Creek every advantage through thorough education in every grade to stand awake in truth and righteousness holding the field not as defeated, for those suspended are thrust onto Satan's battlefield without defense as easy prey and targets for fire and devouring wolves.
The verse exhorts every member to unity, giving preparedness of heart to enter heaven and strength to withstand and keep standing through careful self-examination, drawing in even cords, refusing weakened influence from others' faults and petting of self, for as on a battlefield success requires discipline, order and harmonious action on eternal interests enabling angels to cooperate, wearing God's armor together not any man's, counseling with prayer and humility, venturing without waiting orders for every movement, working in charity and love not narrow cheap planning, each consecrated, watching, waiting, praying, daily converted with holy atmosphere adorning doctrine in home life.

Withstanding includes patient endurance in suffering, discouragement, opposition and false accusations for Christ, keeping fighting the Lord's battles ready for another conflict under His leadership, not intimidated by threatening nor changing testimony nor turning from given work but speaking boldly with every piece on, and after doing all standing firm waiting on the Lord when plans are hindered, moving with moderation and caution when motives are misrepresented, bearing wrongful accusation as Christ bore, taking courage in Him who knows thought and motive unto present success and final reward.
Resisting includes helping tempted people resist even under unreasonable demands, through truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, word, prayer and watchfulness, cooperating with divine power and relying on abundant grace without fearing Satan's strength but looking to Jesus and growing in faith, being clothed with God's Spirit with righteousness before and glory behind, going forward in Christ's meekness trusting God to work through agents, meeting every occasion with Scripture without hasty retaliation nor entering Satan's ground, safe close to Jesus as armor on every side.
Satan's fiery darts often come through family members speaking or acting unguardedly without intent, which he magnifies to pierce the mind, watching going out and coming in and working most successfully in darkness against the ignorant, gaining no advantage when understood, and bracing against the supposed injurer to stand for termed rights mars happiness and makes one his agent to wound the innocent with double advantage, so true withstanding prays for strength instead of contending for self, refuses retaliation, chooses kindness and loving words over harsh discord, and in marriage calmly takes the most favorable view of the husband's requirements yielding even against feeling, saving unhappiness and gaining victory.

Victory and Reward

Under His banner soldiers can never be conquered, for angels from the heavenly courts fight beside them, yet every brain and voice must enlist in the work at the call of a trumpet giving a certain sound, and Christ renews the strength of every faithful soldier for the time of the end when successive scenes crowd together to Christ revealed in clouds with power and great glory. Beloved people delivered from darkness into the kingdom of the Son must take the whole armor to stand before Him with character purified and made white, facing bravely a pathway that will not be smooth but full of peculiar difficulties testing faith, taxing patience and trying steadfastness, casting off works of darkness, persevering in service and willing obedience, knowing Christ has overcome the world and such perseverance wins a crown of life. Those who persevere are pictured as a fully armored company moving in order like soldiers and winning the victory, having endured agonizing struggle, while evil angels press around but cannot overcome or overpower them. With this heavenly armor the enemy's assaults have no power, God's angels surround and protect, and heaven's angels fight beside soldiers in struggle not against people but against spiritual powers, equipped with truth, righteousness, gospel of peace, faith, salvation, God's word, prayer and perseverance.

Taking the armor as being clothed in the panoply of truth enables standing faithful among the faithless and loyal among the disloyal as God's representative with a voice as from heaven, strong in conscious innocence with no fear, sadness or discouragement and joy as a son of God even before a hostile throng with death near, so that words become a shout of victory above battle's roar declaring the cause devoted to God can never fail and truth will triumph even if its advocate perishes with face beaming with heaven's light. Soldiers of Christ must be ever on duty, never yielding to temptation, never unjust, neither yielding nor fleeing but maintaining integrity by God's strength, holding fast to It is written with unyielding firmness, maintaining principles of God's law at any cost, remembering crowning requires striving lawfully, for Christ has overcome on their behalf, placed them on vantage ground, made every provision to overcome, and divine power stands behind every will resolutely set to do right. Girding anew and holding post leads to victory and at the end the conqueror's crown, and the command to take the armor is no mockery but rests on a true God dependable in all circumstances and a Word that cannot fail, so the fight inch by inch for the crown of life uses It is written kept well supplied in the armory to meet advances and train the soul for still severer attacks, with truth, Word, faith, righteousness and hope of salvation as armor and eyes anointed keen to detect devices.

Believers need the armor and readiness at any moment against powers of darkness, turning in trial and temptation to God in prayer and wholly trusting Him who gives grace and strength to overcome and stand victorious. Having on the whole armor gives protection in coming trials because Satan is not dead so his thrusts prove harmless, opening vast resources giving moral power to do righteousness under all circumstances, and encountering difficulties and blasts of adversity makes workers better and abler, for trial is God's chosen means to test and discipline and one of His appointed conditions of success. Followers face conflict with the prince of darkness and are called not to ease, honor or earthly riches but to hardship and even death as their Captain endured, kept from the prince of evil only because Jesus reigns. Fighting in the strength of the Mighty One puts believers on the side that will win at last and conquer in the end, while the evil day is deadly conflict with greatest work and most perilous scenes still before, requiring hearing God's voice while He still speaks in many ways and placing the hand confidingly in His saying Lead me, guide me.

Taking heaven's armor means joining to Jesus and keeping close to His side, hiding self in Him and bringing every ability into subjection to Christ, for knowledge of truth alone is insufficient and heart-reaching power comes in representing truth always as it is in Jesus. This covering gives safety, strength and full victory in meeting opponents who hate truth with deep prejudice and seek to provoke hasty words to evade light and confuse the ignorant, sustaining under irritation, glorifying God and revealing clearly truth's contrast with error, whereas leaving it off lets nature flash in excited irritating words giving no strength, weakening influence, dishonoring God and letting Satan triumph. Girding on God's armor gives full confidence while the world teems with every kind of error, as divine knowledge and wisdom to every truly converted soul having light, keeping close to Jesus and the Word, cultivating entrusted abilities and lifting Bible truth, to keep fables out and give clearness to discern false sentiments, fallacies and sensational absurd theories that will increase. The armor enables withstanding evil and remaining standing after doing all, applied to standing against misleading theories clothed with Christian armor grounded in gospel peace, and those clothed speak truth with great power so those kept from hearing accept without fear of family opposition, identified with the latter rain refreshing from the Lord's presence and loud cry of the third angel.

God's whole armor of righteousness equips to withstand the evil day and remain standing after struggle in final battles, warning Satan tries to make the believer stumble and urging constant awareness, with safety by faith in earnest prayer at Jesus' feet and strength by learning His meekness and lowliness, fighting faithfully and not presuming safety from temptation. The Christian life is battle and march requiring engaging every power of soul, body and spirit and looking to Christ for strength and grace, with victory assured through His death, and overcoming requires earnest effort while God's grace enables conquering. Standing firm after encountering false theories and sayings of men means holding the foundation already laid rather than a new one, holding foundations laid at the beginning by prayerful study and revelation as first disciples did, refusing to tear them away to build a new faith or lay stronger foundation on supposed new ways, keeping the confession that no other foundation can be laid than what is laid.

Taking the full armor cheerfully with hope and faith to stand as valiant soldiers means cheerful faithful willingness to engage for Christ, endure hardest part, fight the good fight, share victory and receive eternal reward. God's truth enables standing through trial and oppression as Christ endured, and those placing themselves under God's control to be led gain zeal from unseen allies, exhaustless resources, greatness of enterprise and power of Leader, catching the steady trend of events ordained by God. Inspired with the spirit of Him who gave His life for the world, they no longer stand impotent pointing to inability but move in perfect unity to give the last mercy message, pressing battle to gates, willing to do and dare knowing omnipotence supplies need and the Lord as mighty Conqueror works to victory. Preparation to stand firm in coming crisis is not met by worldly ambition, unconsecration and self-deception which leave ministers and believers unprepared against Satan's wrath and inventions unto shipwreck of faith, but by correcting wrong habits and devoting wholly to God.

In closing days when Satan's forces bring trial and sorrow on commandment-keepers they cannot stand by own strength but God's power keeps them to withstand opposition. Withstanding in the evil day means earnest persevering resistance of a wily foe contending for usefulness or life and marring peace lifelong, by closing every possible door against Satan, living in family so he takes no advantage of word or deed to tear down, praying earnestly with unyielding faith relying on merits of Christ's blood and claiming saving strength. His power is limited: he may heat the furnace but Jesus and angels watch the trusting so fire has no power to destroy true metal and only dross burns, and when darkness gathers shutting Jesus from sight and hope fails, standing means trusting solely merits of atonement, casting helpless unworthiness on the crucified risen Saviour, waiting patiently in hope under clouds with faith swallowing will into God's will, pleading for patience and grace to overcome rather than removal, and such never perish. All claiming to be God's children must arm for unceasing conflict of truth and holiness against error and ungodliness never left to few while others rest, meeting demands of the time with energy, perseverance and unswerving faith in God alone, vigilant and determined as Satan's power increases working terribly earnest knowing time is short, while indolence, sloth, presumption and self-confidence bring defeat.

A person must be equipped girded with truth and wearing righteousness or fall by the enemy's hand. Christ's soldiers must put on God's armor to stand against evil by pressing back moral darkness flooding the world where error and sin are embraced more readily than truth and righteousness. Christians equipped for conflict against evil agencies not human enemies, clothed with God's righteousness, can stand against every foe and gain victory as God joins His power with efforts, and wearers fight the enemy's hindrance of church progress. Those fighting for Prince Immanuel in spiritual warfare must make earnest painstaking preparation as soldiers drilling day after day till ready for emergency and service at call, taking part in drill and educating in all army duties, learning to obey before fitted to command. Serving Christ as soldiering under His banner calls for heroic effort and patient endurance, standing unshrinking in front when enemy presses, withstanding by turning to God as Stronghold bringing promises of the Word, strengthened from above for the hour, with victories causing leaning heavier on the Mighty One not self-exaltation, presenting salvation so forcibly it awakens answering chord in other minds.

Ministers and believers face battle against the Devil's temptations including doubt and unbelief, where he uses even few words to unsettle minds and ministers repeating doubts spread attack to others. The call is to awake and take the whole armor, repenting selfishness, coldness and indifference, living truth's sanctifying power and working with the evangelist to bring others to truth, applied to awakening to duty in neglected cities to withstand trial and remain standing. Advocates of truth must enter conflict in God's strength not own, for confidence in ability and past success is not God's armor and self-reliance leaves weakness against Satan's advance of error, while success in defending truth comes from trusting God not taking credit for victories He gives. Taking the armor for great direct conflict in spreading truth means girding living abiding faith and continual prayer, for Satan hinders because truth strengthens what remains and decides the undecided for God, bringing sickness, distress and dark powers for ascendancy, so withstanding means laying hold of sure promises, praying believing without ceasing, anointing the sick with oil in the Lord's name praying for healing, and standing free to glorify God.

Workers must be equipped to stand firm against the enemy while doing work, as those sent to Battle Creek were to be firm in principle, put on armor and present truth humbly clearly faithfully so youth be not led from truth in Jesus, gaining victory with Christ as helper. The call applies to God-fearing honest single-hearted workers looking steadfastly to God's glory as they contend against error. Throwing down the armor represents giving up struggle, as the discouraged brother returning to harmful habits, but encouraging message and grace helped him rise again. Having on whole armor of righteousness to stand and work just where God desires requires closely criticizing personal devisings rather than treating them beyond question and earnestly considering eternal interests, receiving God working with those working with Him, while God will not endorse work framed by human planning. Taking God's armor means wearing it by doing just as He bids under Jesus as Captain and Leader, for strength lies in obedience to His Word giving power not of ourselves.

Taking the whole armor and keeping it on meets in human flesh dark powers working in human flesh, for solid missionary work and faithful ministry standing on elevated platform of eternal truth and rectitude proportionate to great needs, placing on right side daily connected with Jesus with angels round about doing angels' work, saving souls who without warning may plunge into eternity and guarding against trifling with own salvation. The Spirit makes fit workers by putting God's armor on, and being armed means cheerful service keeping sadness and discouragement off face, giving Christ's full joy through keeping commandments and abiding in love. God's whole armor equips to endure earnest conflict and remain standing, exemplified in Paul who wore it, fought faithfully, finished work and mission and died conqueror having overcome the world. Wearers stand as faithful sentinels doing assigned work with humble faith and sincerity. Preparedness is first proved in home by faithful home duties and spiritual progress unto perfection, with family seeking with humble hearts to know Christ abides within, then carried into mission abroad and church work, and those entering service put on armor against wiles with earnest desire to learn bearing responsibilities with strength and courage for conflict growing severer toward close.

In earth's closing days putting on the whole armor withstands growing dangers and enables remaining standing after doing all, demanding earnest work, renewed energy and vigilant action, for indifference and sloth lose personal religion and heaven, though angels stand ready to help so faith be not eclipsed by fierceness. With perilous times before, all knowing truth must awake placing body soul spirit under God's discipline and staying wide awake because enemy is on track, putting on armor by loving obeying present truth and following directions in word, testimonies and books making plain duty and position, heeding warnings line upon line leaving no excuse if disregarded. Constant temptation to carelessness and indifference will come and Satan will try to deceive even the elect, but obedience to every requirement, standing in light and working for God's glory protect from assaults. Readiness rests on daily conversion, humility and unquestioning trust in God of all power who will not abandon, facing enemies in Jesus' strength, faithfully performing duties alert and active not passive, with living experience bearing clear witness. Christians must keep armor on ready at all times in all places, safe only keeping it on working and sleeping in readiness, for conflict of right and wrong since Adam yielded rages with Satan working smoothly through worldlings unsuspected, good and evil never harmonizing with no compromise between light and darkness, yet divine vitality in doing right Satan cannot overcome so truth triumphs and God vanquishes.

Persecution for faith belongs to spiritual struggle against evil powers not merely people, and the Holy Spirit uses Scriptures to strengthen understanding and resistance to withstand and having done all to stand. Ministers buckle armor by holding to high standard in the Son's life and labors, studying Word requirements, cherishing Christlike simplicity and keeping truth's simplicity in view, for active labor in faith and love with reward to every humble laborer. The verse calls for readiness and perseverance relying on God's protection not human strength to withstand and after doing all remain standing. Standing firm requires obeying entrusted truths, walking by faith, keeping close connection, following the Captain and letting God direct warfare, for indifferent noncommittal position brings no victories. Putting on every piece of gospel armor right now through Holy Spirit's power with clear sharp discernment keeps from captivity to stand firm and reach heavenly Canaan where the Lord is Father and wickedness ends, especially as great trouble approaches.

Spiritual progress occurs in real conflict requiring readiness, with truth girding mind, righteousness protecting, salvation as helmet, Spirit's sword as weapon, and earnest prayer and faith, which is no fight against one another. All armor must be put on because enemy works on every side needing God's power every moment. Christians as soldiers on service battlefield under Christ as Captain must put on whole armor for aggressive warfare: waking, working while able in His grace, exercising ability so it grows, sharing His self-denial not expecting ease, unearthing buried talents to be active diligent, refusing to remain crippled defective cowardly compromisers weakening forces, forgetting infirmities advancing at trumpet lifting standard through battle under orders, entering earnest engagements because the Lord comes. Those putting on whole Christian armor placing fully under God's control receive strength to honor Him daily, do will and follow way, gaining mastery over satanic deceptions and discerning falsehoods and enticements. Proclaimers of the third angel's message put on whole armor to stand boldly at post amid detraction and falsehood in closing scenes, fighting good fight resisting with It is written, staying where Father Son and Holy Spirit are efficiency giving selves unreservedly, so heaven's strength commands believers and trust in God barricades with impregnable wall.

Taking the whole armor means girding and standing ready to journey to help needy souls because sanctuary work is almost finished and work must be done while day lasts, withstanding Satan's oppressing power by faith to beat him back, and when victory not first gained by fasting and praying bringing sure triumph. Believers personally put on whole armor against hindrances of envy, faultfinding, disunion and distractions blocking proclamation, to be prepared and tell those unreached reasons of faith where the world stands in history. Taking armor now is united determined effort to save souls especially in cities with no delay for lack of means, turning attention to cities, calling lay members with means to supply need, reconsecrating in harmony with God and Christ, resisting temptation to commercial enterprise instead of investing in the Lord's work, proclaiming worldwide as urged for twenty years. It is waking to God's purposes and individual responsibility using every gift to give last mercy message, for the evil day is now when darkness covers the world, and withstanding and standing is being light-bearers awake using providential advantages, moving to victory in perfect unity pressing battle to gates because God lives reigns conducting the universe and with Christ and angels works intensely to quell Satan's wrath so plans are not thwarted and works for servants as mighty conqueror.

Standing firmly equipped especially in great need means trusting the Lord as strength and holding together to truth of His Word, not finding fault but mutually encouraging. Putting on full armor and remaining firm through trials means never laying aside, with faith courage and perseverance withstanding difficulty and following Christ. Succeeding in warfare requires constant watching and praying, for prayer neglected forfeits holding strength, and doing good helping the needy belongs to warfare under angels' constant gaze. Young people are called to put on righteousness armor, overcome every defect and rely on the Lord for power to gain victory after victory to withstand and after doing all to stand. Putting on every part and going out to work enables standing against evil and carrying heaven's light to those in darkness. Those who would help souls destitute of wisdom, sanctification and righteousness must themselves have on whole armor of Christ's righteousness, for none leads into experience not partaken, and those untasting God's rich blessing make little of blessings others received.
