Roman Soldier in the Full Armour of Godby CNSDATECH

Ephesians 6:17

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, as parts of the whole armor of God to be taken in order to be strong in the Lord and to stand and withstand in the evil day. The helmet guards the mind as salvation and hope and assurance, while the sword is for attack and the shield of faith is for defense within the armor of truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, and prayerful watching. The wrestling that requires this armor is not against flesh and blood or merely human opponents but against principalities, powers, rulers of world darkness and spiritual wickedness in high places. The sword is the living Word, powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to divide soul and spirit, discerning thoughts, exposing sin, pulling down strongholds and bringing every thought captive to Christ. Christ met every temptation by appeal to what is written instead of argument or self-serving miracle, and believers overcome in the same way by prayerfully studying, obeying, feeding on and skillfully holding forth the Word, keeping on every piece without laying it aside until conflict ends in victory.

Helmet Sword and Armor

The helmet is salvation and the sword of the Spirit is the word of God, both to be taken as parts of the whole armor of God for standing against spiritual evil. They equip believers to be strong in the Lord, to stand against Satan and his emissaries and spiritual forces, and to withstand in the evil day. Together with the gospel of peace this armor is a sufficient defense, and wisdom is given to all who ask for it.

Taking the helmet and sword belongs to putting on the whole armor to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might, to stand against the wiles of the devil, to wrestle, and to withstand in the evil day and having done all to stand. Standing is with loins girt about with truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, and above all the shield of faith to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. It is joined with praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit and watching with perseverance and supplication for all saints. Keeping on every piece enables conquering all foes met in constantly changing scenes, including foes not yet developed, subtle satanic agencies, increasing confederacies, opposing influences, delusive theories, growing apostasy, and satanic agencies in human form in every city opposing the kingdom of God till the close of this world's history, while heavenly angels in human guise are on the field of action. This requires looking continually to God, pleading His assurance by faith, hanging the helpless soul in humility upon invisible power, making His Word the man of counsel, and resisting invisible powers intelligently with intelligent faith that quenches fiery darts from whatever source they come.

The armor is God's complete armor found in God's Word, the gospel of Jesus Christ, for contending against Satan's spiritual forces and for preaching the Word to a perishing world. It is heaven's armor, Christ's armor and the whole armor of Christ's righteousness specified by Christ as Captain of salvation, Commander of the armies of heaven and invisible leader of His soldiers in active conflict, and every piece of it is essential with assurance of victory to those who do their part in putting it on. It is the armor of His righteousness in which Christ calls people to work by His Spirit to bring souls from sin to righteousness, used under the Holy Spirit's moulding influence while believers actively serve truth and righteousness, fulfill God-given duties, rely on God's wisdom rather than their own, trust their undefeated Leader, and work to uplift Jesus and exalt God's law. Obeying the Captain's orders and counting the cost to withstand in the evil day and stand brings supernatural assistance, so that in human weakness believers do deeds of Omnipotence in withstanding the evil one and are safe in Christ's assurance that He has overcome the world.

The helmet is salvation as protection, especially protection for the mind, and the word of God is the Spirit's sword and weapon supplied by the Spirit for the struggle against Satan, his forces, the devil, temptation and the unseen spiritual enemy. Every truly converted person must wear the whole armor to stand, especially in times of peril and opposition, and using it includes prayer and helping tempted people resist evil. Salvation as helmet is hope and assurance worn on the brow, while the sword is for attack and the shield of faith is for defense.

The wrestling calling for this armor is not against flesh and blood, not merely against people or human opponents, and not with men in questions of Bible truth. It is against principalities and powers, against principles and powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world and spiritual wickedness in high places, against satanic agencies, accusation, deception, spiritual evil and apostasy. It is therefore needed by ministers, physicians and medical missionary workers with real conversion, reformation, humiliation and Spirit-controlled hearts to meet God, to stand as brave soldiers against the enemy's wiles, to withstand in the evil day and having done all to stand, and to stand firmly in faith under Christ's leadership rather than follow Satan.

Conflict Against Dark Powers

The church now is militant, not triumphant, and must fight seen and unseen foes in every city until Christ leaves His place of intercession before the mercy seat to put on vengeance. The wrestling is not against flesh and blood but against principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world and spiritual wickedness in high places, including every sophistry, fallacy and working of the enemy to blind minds subject to him, while satanic agencies in human form are on the ground and men have confederated to oppose the Lord of hosts. In every city agencies are busily organizing parties opposed to the law of God, joined by professed saints and avowed unbelievers, and these confederacies will continue to the close of intercession. Jesus Christ leads this fight as Captain of the Lord's host and Captain of salvation just as much today as when He led Israel through the wilderness for forty years, and Christians as His soldiers follow His orders under His banner alone to build up His kingdom as laborers together with God in view of the universe of heaven. This is no time for the people of God to be weaklings or off guard for a moment, but to take the whole armor with no piece left off so the whole body is prepared, in order to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might, to stand against the wiles of the devil and to withstand in the evil day and having done all to stand.

There is unceasing war with no release against Satan's untiring attack on the law of God, a continual conflict between truth and holiness and error and ungodliness in which life itself is conflict with no rest and no laying off the armor. God calls His people to be witnesses for Him by vindicating the law and pressing the battle to the gates, moving forward to victory in perfect unity and willing to do and dare for God in giving the last message of mercy to the world. This work must advance or it will go backward, and those who hold on in hard and difficult places without relaxing hold or letting faith diminish when the way cannot be seen through darkness cannot perish nor lose their way by cherishing an abiding sense of God's power to uphold them. God has not left this warfare upon a few soldiers while the others rest at ease, but all who profess interest in the cause of God, the advancement of truth and the conversion of sinners should be soldiers in the Lord's army with one interest, one motive and one object as long as life shall last, going forth with energy, perseverance and unswerving faith, vigilant and determined to escape Satan's wiles. In God alone is strength, and indolence and slothfulness, presumption and self-confidence will alike bring defeat and destruction, while the armor is laid down at the Redeemer's feet only when the believer's struggle is over and readiness for instant action sick or well in obeying the Captain of salvation at once remains the rule.

The battle in questions of Bible truth is not with flesh and blood, not with men and not merely against human opponents, but against principles and powers and the rulers of the darkness of this world. The helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit equip soldiers of Jesus Christ for this spiritual battle against satanic agencies and deception and apostasy. God's workers are therefore not to join in personal controversy with the deceiver, but to stand firmly in the faith and resist temptation under Christ's leadership rather than follow Satan who works through accusation and deception. Being clad with the armor of God's righteousness enables believers to gain victory over every foe, with hope in the living God who joins His power with their efforts.

The evil day to be withstood includes troublous times ahead when everything that can be shaken will be shaken and tests come on every side. It is the time when human laws will compel worship according to human opinions and earthly and satanic powers will unite to oppress God's people, as probation draws to a close. The enemy will come from every side in strange ways with devices that infatuate many, and the only refuge is abiding in Christ, which happens by knowing His Word and doing it, since everything received from God comes through His Word as the Spirit impresses it upon the heart. Putting on the armor of righteousness is therefore earnest, determined effort against the foe, with overcoming grace enabling God's people to conquer in the warfare against sin until the redeemed praise God and the Lamb for salvation, and ministers must be rooted and grounded in truth through Bible instruction and educating teaching after the way Jesus taught.

The experience of Nehemiah in rebuilding Jerusalem teaches that God's people need the whole armor as long as time shall last. Taking salvation for a helmet and the Word of God for the sword gives strength and decision of character in the Lord and in the power of His might to stand against the wiles of the devil. It keeps workers on guard so the enemy cannot mingle his evil with every good work done and spoil God's purposes, enabling them to withstand in the evil day and having done all to stand. God's people must thus keep their spiritual armor on and remain faithful in work to save others until God releases them from service, when reward will follow, fighting in real warfare in defense of faith with weapons in hand.

Gideon and his men show that waging spiritual warfare requires humble trust in God and faithful obedience to His will regardless of the world's opinion. Putting on the armor means implicitly obeying God's commands, refusing to conform to worldly customs and maxims, earnestly using every religious privilege, inquiring of God daily to learn His will, and diligently studying the life and words of Christ and cheerfully obeying His instructions. One thus girded with righteousness need not fear the enemies of God and is assured of the presence and protection of the Captain of the Lord's host, because success rests on God's help working with human effort, not on human wisdom and skill. Daniel illustrates the same armor by relying on God as the source of wisdom and power, with truth as it is in Jesus serving as his weapon that cuts both ways. Joshua was a wise general because God was his Guide and he used the sword of the Spirit first, walking in the path God marked out with a Counsellor whose wisdom is far above any human wisdom, a pattern for those carrying large responsibilities.

Every brain and voice is to be enlisted under Christ's banner in the time of the end crowded with fulfilling signs leading to the day when Christ is revealed in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory, where they can never be conquered because angels from heaven fight beside them. The helmet and sword belong to heaven's armor specified by Christ as Captain of salvation, Commander of the armies of heaven and invisible leader for His soldiers in active conflict against a vast confederacy of evil for an eternal invisible world, with the whole universe of God marshalled for the conflict. God's people are in real warfare fighting in defense of faith, and angels arrayed for their defense ascend and descend a ladder of shining brightness and are commissioned to draw nearer and still nearer to those fighters to defend them. Taking the full armor with truth, righteousness, gospel of peace, faith and praying always with all prayer in the Spirit and watching with perseverance for all saints is obeying the Captain's orders and counting the cost, and with this preparation faithfully obeyed comes supernatural assistance so that in human weakness believers do the deeds of Omnipotence in withstanding the evil one, safe in His assurance of overcoming the world, in aggressive warfare to rescue fallen human beings and win them back to loyalty rather than against one another. Because of this no one must pull the weapons out of the hands of fellow fighters or hinder them because they are not working exactly as expected.

Satan's power to deceive increases and will be more fully exhibited to ensnare many, with lying wonders, miracles and healing in plain sight, so warnings must be heeded and souls guarded at risk. The call to put on the whole armor demands earnest, watchful, vigilant and energetic action to keep Satan from gaining advantage, since indifference and sloth endanger personal religion and eternal life. God's angels are ready to help so that faith is not overcome by the fierceness of the conflict, and success in warfare with eternal interests at stake requires order and harmonious action. The safety of Christ's soldiers is assured only when they keep their armor on continually, working and sleeping in it, because the conflict between right and wrong, between God and Satan, has raged ever since Adam yielded to Satan, and good and evil never harmonize and light and darkness allow no compromise, since truth is light revealed and error is darkness and righteousness has no fellowship with unrighteousness. Connected with doing right there is a divine vitality that Satan cannot overcome, so that truth will triumph over falsehood and God will vanquish the enemy.

Power and Work of Word

The Word is a living and powerful weapon, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to divide soul and spirit and joints and marrow and discerning the thoughts and intents of the heart. Through God it pulls down strongholds, casts down imaginations and arguments and every high and proud thing against the knowledge of God, and brings every thought captive to obedience to Christ. It is to be taken as the truths of the Bible treasured in heart and mind and obeyed in life, lifted up as the standard of truth and held forth as the word of life with It is written. Believers must become skilled in using it to cut through opposition and darkness in battle against the world, the flesh, the devil and forces of opposition, and it also gives definite commands and shows the duty to be carried out. Spoken in simplicity as heralds of the gospel without controversy, contention, dwelling on opposers' objections, profane and vain babblings, or wounding hearts, it is a sharp arrow by which the wicked are slain and the power of God unto salvation.

As a sharp sword it should cut to the soul, piercing the sinner's heart and cutting it in pieces to expose sin. When sin is cherished and excused it does not do this cutting work, and compromise with darkness makes the warfare seem easy while indulgence still hinders faith. Repeated as mere theory without its sacred influence felt upon the speaker's own soul, it has no force upon hearers and is rejected as error. That rejection leaves the speaker responsible for loss of souls, and the call is to let the Word expose sin, put away every cherished indulgence even at cost of worldly ties and human approval, and resist sin.

Treasured and obeyed it convinces and converts the soul, transforms the character, and comforts and uplifts the heart, making the proud humble, the perverse meek and contrite, and the disobedient obedient. It cuts away fleshly lusts and sinful habits interwoven with daily practice and makes men willing to suffer for their Lord. It goes forth with publications and tracts where missions open in all parts of the world to convince of sin and prepare the way of the Lord to the ends of the earth, so none should sit at ease while places around them and all nations remain unworked in darkness and error. Thorough study of Scripture and use of its truths in reform, as shown in Wycliffe, belongs to wielding it, and it is the weapon for gaining access to hearts of the ignorant and wicked dead in trespasses and sins, to be used with Christ's intense earnestness, prayer and faith for a sound and solid work, profitable for all things with miracles wrought through it.

Newly edged with Pentecostal power and bathed in heavenly light and the lightnings of heaven, the saving sanctifying truth proclaimed by human lips touched with holy fire cut its way through unbelief. It overcame satanic agencies, convinced the world of sin, converted sinners, brought them Christ's righteousness, overthrew idolatry, and magnified the Lord as possessing supreme power. Thousands were converted in a day and called out from the world to be kings and priests unto God, carrying the gospel to the ends of the earth as a united active force. When God pours out the Spirit upon the churches the sword is newly edged and cuts both ways, entering minds and hearts.

The truth as it is in Jesus is this sword, cutting both ways as a weapon in the fight for God. It includes the truth from Christ's own lips and the subjects on which He dwelt, including the law of God, learned daily and spoken by believers whose lips and voice are sanctified and subdued by the Holy Spirit in clear distinct speech with pleasant voice and due fervor to convince the world of sin, with Christ Himself making the impression. By it the straight testimony cuts through crooked paths with deep thorough correction, not superficial, because souls are at stake. Those who make God their trust, relying on Christ day by day and seeking the Lord as Daniel did with three daily petitions to God as wisdom and power, wield this truth in word, spirit and principle, and experienced laborers who understand the Scriptures and do the Word model its use to youth united with them. So wielded it equips believers to proclaim truth with sharp clear testimony.

It prevails against human reasoning opposing Scripture, and human arguments cannot withstand it. It proved mighty against papal authority, rationalistic philosophy and fanaticism, and decrees, threats, torture, religious condemnation and coercion cannot stop its influence or overcome it. It is the only weapon to use in this warfare, so the gospel must not become a cause of bloodshed, and believers defend it through prayer while bearing Christ's cross, patiently suffering, refusing to avenge or defend by violence or shed brethren's blood, and leaving judgment to God. Where people can read the Scriptures in their own language they eagerly study, discuss and memorize them for themselves, and efforts to suppress them can deepen desire to know what they teach.

Scripture is inspired truth and the test by which claims of inspiration are judged, rather than human wisdom, feeling or imagination, and it stands against fanaticism claiming inspiration from human imagination. It is the believer's rule of faith and practice and the only foundation of faith, to be received as truth and obeyed faithfully. It cuts away prejudice against dreams and visions promised for the last days, while visions may help show how its prophecies are fulfilled but give no separate rule. Genuine charity does not blunt this sword or keep it from exposing and confronting sin, but loves the sinner while faithfully warning of danger and pointing to Christ who takes away sin.

The Sword is the Word of the living God, still present and not stripped of power to impress hearts, with work to regenerate, purify, sanctify and prepare hearts for the Holy Spirit, cutting its way to hearts by living quickening power when wielded with earnestness as God's sanctified people formerly wielded it. It is a two-edged sword placed in the hands of God's servants, and the Holy Spirit inspires consecrated servants and works through them, leading them to speak in unity, with God calling to purity, holiness and sanctification so His work can be accomplished and the Spirit fully imparted when His people are rightly related to Him. It cuts both ways under the Spirit's inspiration and, as the guide bringing harmony and unity when its principles are followed, shines as light in darkness and a Rock to stand on amid tempest. God's Word is the sword in the human agent's hand while the Holy Spirit gives it efficiency and vital power to impress the mind, teaching and enlightening hearers and working through the agent, without which reading Scripture will not save souls or transform character. Its sharp searching force exposed the dangers of Freemasonry and the low religious standard of secret societies, and through the human messenger convicted Faulkhead and led him to leave the lodges. The truth as it is in Jesus planted in the heart is nourished by the holy oil represented in Zechariah 4:12-14, under God's armor and the Savior's loving protection against Satan's schemes.

No one should assume that he knows all the truth the Bible proclaims, for the Bible supplies evidence for every point and its truth must be used skillfully rather than in words of condemnation, since a wily enemy can turn the sword against one who does not know how to wield it. The living Word as the sword is to be proclaimed through the Holy Spirit, equipping believers for conflict, bringing victory to those who trust it, and guarding against Satan's deceptions and false teaching.

Christ Pattern for Using

Christ met every temptation by answering with what is written, standing on solid rock rather than entering into argument or working a miracle for self-benefit, and He gained victory through power from above in answer to prayer. In the wilderness He used the Word of God as the sword of the Spirit against Satan and conquered on every point, making Him the example to follow in spiritual warfare. When attacked, those who trust in Jesus can wield God's truth against the tempter, for Jesus helps them and raises a standard against the enemy, and truth wielded with power makes the father of lies tremble. The living Word is a reliable defense that cannot be overcome, so His followers are to answer the enemy with God's Word rather than use deceptive arguments, and He also drew the answer from the lawyer by his knowledge of the Word.

Believers resist by holding firmly to what is written and standing by Scripture against temptation and Satan's attacks, relying on God's strength and Christ's victory to overcome. Keeping Scripture in the mind equips the soul for conflict, for the Word together with truth, faith, righteousness, and the hope of salvation supplies assurance and the weapon by which the believer answers temptation with it is written. When Satan overwhelms the mind with discouragement and self-pity, thoughts are to be filled with the Bible's promises and answered with it is written, for the Word breaks Satan's power and gives victory. They are to recall promises quickly with unseen help near, ready to answer with God's written Word, which helps refuse hasty retaliatory words and remain close to Jesus in peace, for delay brings weakness and defeat and this defense sharpens perception to recognize Satan's devices.

The sword must be used skillfully with heavenly wisdom and close connection with God, for a wily foe will seize it and turn it against one who does not know how to use it. What is wanted in every conflict is the Spirit's sword rather than words of condemnation, meaning the truth as it is in Jesus held with Bible evidence for every point advanced. It is for defending and advancing truth, not for condemning others, and no one should assume full knowledge of all the truth the Bible proclaims.

Its right use combats error by presenting truth simply as heralds of the gospel, lifting up the standard of truth and holding forth the word of life without entering controversy or contention. It shuns profane and vain babblings, does not dwell on the objections of opposers, and speaks no word that wounds and bruises hearts. Opponents are to be met with Christlike gentleness while self is kept out of sight, abiding in Jesus with dignity, calmness, composure, boldness and decision, trusting the Lord in trial and leaving results with Him. It is wielded not by retaliating, making personal thrusts, irritating or provoking, humiliating opponents, speaking fast or with excitement, or speaking in triumph, but by plain declaration of precious truth as it is in Jesus, crowding in all possible truth slowly, calmly, earnestly, zealously, in love and pity, since souls are in the valley of decision and the presentation will prove a savor of life unto life or of death unto death.

The sword is not sharp uncontrolled words or temper against erring pupils, for using those is using Satan's weapons, not the Spirit's. It is the Word of God and the only sword that can be used safely, so when treated unjustly and unreasonably the defense is Scripture lived out in self-control, prayer, and obedience, not retaliation, harsh and unbecoming words, selfishness, or guile. Defense means circumspect words and actions, respect for authority and fellow workers, strict guardianship over spirit, actions, and words because connected souls are affected, raising the moral tone by personal influence and example, honoring fellow workers, and uttering only kind peaceful words which make for peace.

Arming means faith in God's Word prayerfully studied and practically applied and obeyed, which becomes a shield from Satan's power and brings off conquerors through the blood of Christ. It is the only weapon that can successfully resist Satan, his evil angels and invisible agents on every track, and bad men acting at his suggestion, to be used against marvels and miracles wrought in sight, healing of the sick before us, and the more fully exhibited lying wonders that will ensnare many souls. Departing from plain precepts and commandments and giving heed to fables fits minds to receive those lying wonders, while prayerful study and practical obedience protect from delusive arts and help overcome through the blood of the Lamb. Neglecting Scripture leaves people powerless to resist evil spirits, and distorting its plain teaching to support human traditions or opinions robs it of power and opens the way to unbelief and spiritual deception.

Feeding on the Word brings spiritual growth, strength, wisdom, and a settled healthy experience, and meeting the Spirit's sword under God's shield equips for faithful soldier service holding the standard high while the shield quenches fiery darts. Constant thoughtful Bible study gives young people strength for resisting temptation and proclaiming truth, and confession of sin with reliance on God's power protects against sophistry, requiring every piece of armor against prevailing wickedness. Diligent searching of the Scriptures draws daily strength and forms character fit for redeemed society, equipping for every good work including warning the world and leading others to salvation. In the school the Word is the foundation of all study, its facts and doctrines appealed to on the Lord's authority to help form a holy people, while unused it rusts and broken cisterns leave inefficiency, and constant meditation keeps it polished and effective like a sharp two-edged sword full of promises.

It must be used filled with all the fullness of God and with the meekness and lowliness of Christ, with self and pride dead and become as a little child. It is to be meditated upon night and day and brought into practical life, being trained in right principles and growing in grace at home and everywhere to give moral power to actions. Believers are to keep it ready for action while praying, believing, and walking humbly with God in self-watchfulness, honoring fellow workers and speaking only kind peaceful words.

Holy Life in Armor

Taking the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, is the cultivation of personal piety that comes from righteous principles kept in every transaction, striving for victory over personal inclination with the help of the Holy Spirit, and living with a mind sensible of Christ's forgiveness so that every action is circumspect and gives no occasion for good to be disparaged by an appearance of evil. These Christian graces are given for service to God and not merely for admiration, and the strength to meet what is required is available through divine grace that can subdue passion. Taking every piece of the whole armor is in order to stand and to withstand in the evil day against the wiles of the devil in a wrestling not against flesh and blood but against principalities, powers, rulers of darkness and spiritual wickedness in high places. Although all strength comes from God in the power of His might, each person must act an individual part, cherish and strengthen consciousness of individual duty, and strengthen spiritual consciousness by continual increasing faith, looking to God continually, pleading His assurance by faith, and with humility hanging the helpless soul upon invisible power. The Word of the Lord is the defense to be made the man of counsel, dependence is upon God's Word as guide and instructor and upon His revealed word with the divine Spirit and watchfulness in prayer, and resistance must be intelligent and understanding, above all with intelligent faith that quenches the fiery darts of the wicked from whatever source they come. Studied and obeyed by believers associated together in work, this taking makes spiritual life a living active principle through communion with the living God.

It requires being strong in the Lord by living faith union with Christ, depending on Him who died and estimates aright the value of the soul, putting on Christ so His grace enables faithful performance of every duty, growing in grace and constantly trusting Christ to supply needs. Going forward in the strength of His might while helping the weak and brightening lives ready to die with hope and courage, looking to Him for orders and obeying His commands, gives wisdom to see clearly the wiles, devices and stratagems prepared to deceive and ruin. Without Christ nothing can be done, and those exalted to responsibility must reveal deeper piety, more earnest faith and more zeal as witnesses, doing all on the human part to cooperate with God and then stand. Each soul must put on the armor in his own battle, pray, commune with God and keep watch over the soul, and when he does this part God does not fail to do His part and gives strength against the enemy; so putting on the whole Christian armor and submitting fully to God gives strength to honor Him, do His will, follow His way, overcome satanic deception and recognize the enemy's lies and enticements. Fidelity must mark all work, not striving for the highest place or to be first but striving to represent most accurately to the world the truth for this time, and being true to God and to one another even after weakening.

Taking salvation for a helmet means relying on the merits of the blood of Christ and claiming His saving strength with earnest prayer and unyielding faith, closing every door against Satan so he can take no advantage of words or acts. Satan will contend for the usefulness or the life of the godly and try to mar their peace as long as they live, and he may cause the furnace to be heated and darkness to gather and shut Jesus from sight, but his power is limited. Jesus and angels watch the trusting Christian so nothing is consumed but the dross, and the fire he kindles has no power to destroy or hurt the true metal. Depending solely on the merits of the atonement and casting helpless unworthiness on the crucified and risen Saviour, Christians never perish, learning to trust and wait patiently in hope when clouds envelop them, with the will swallowed up in the will of God; and when the devil points to sins they acknowledge they are sinners and trust Christ as Saviour who calls sinners to repentance, having come as Substitute and Surety because they could not redeem or restore themselves.

It means persistently overcoming spiritual defects and bringing heart, tastes, appetites, passions, motives and desires into conformity with Christ's will and God's standard of righteousness, for anything less leaves room for temptation and evil to prevail. The helmet and sword are to be kept on in constant duty, working and sleeping with armor on, never yielding to temptation, never being unjust, neither yielding nor fleeing, but maintaining integrity by relying on the strength of God, holding fast the sword with firmness that will not yield an inch as It is written. Believers stand on vantage ground because Christ has overcome in their behalf and has made every provision to overcome, with divine power standing behind every will resolutely set to do right, yet striving lawfully in order to be crowned, maintaining the principles contained in God's law at any cost, and living in watchfulness with a daily crucifixion of self. Feeling and impulse are no shield against temptation, because feelings not rooted in conviction of judgment have no stability but depend on outward circumstances and prevailing influences, and temptation changes them and leaves a person without confidence in self or in God and drifting without anchor. Standing firm therefore requires firm principle, inward assurance that strengthens purpose, watching unto prayer, and gaining spiritual strength, for without the armor the enemy will surely prevail. Keeping it requires quick discernment of danger, seeing the hateful character of sin and expelling it from the soul, casting every idol out of the heart, refusing the dominion of evil and divided service, refusing at peril of the soul to cherish lust which wars against the Spirit, putting the concerns of eternity and being saved before every other enterprise, and dying to self so that words, spirit and actions are after the likeness of Christ and not working to uplift self. Doers of the Word so clad receive strength in Jesus that becomes their own by faith and are clothed with the righteousness of Christ that God will accept, and thus successfully resist the serpent's wiles.

Being girded requires knowing well one's own character, the sin that most easily besets, and the temptations most likely to overcome, and refusing to expose oneself needlessly or invite temptation by placing oneself on the enemy's ground. Self-knowledge of this kind saves from falling into grievous temptation and prevents inglorious defeat, and it is gained by faithfully investigating motives and principles of conduct and comparing actions with the standard of duty revealed in God's word. When duty calls where circumstances are not favorable, God gives special help to meet the conflict. Success also depends on centering the affections on God and rejecting influence that weakens resolve to do right, turning to God with the whole heart for strength and confidence, while Christ's keeping does not remove the need to watch and pray and avoid the first step into a wrong course. After yielding to the tempter it means keeping off his ground and not running without Christ's direction into companionship with those who do not love or fear God, while witnessing for Jesus and advocating His truth wherever placed, becoming a power for good because the life revealed is the life of Christ, with holy angels working through instrumentality submitted to Christ and with Christ's blood as the only hope removing through faith every dark spot of character.

Guarded speech belongs to that warfare for the Christian soldier clad in divine armor and never off guard, even when compelled to be with the frivolous. The soul warmed and refreshed by the truth of the Word has a treasure of good things to bring forth, speaking words that help and bless others, lead minds to God, and sow seeds of truth and righteousness that bear fruit with a saving influence. Being armored against every evil work means having thoughts centered upon God, pure as crystal and sanctified by virtue, so that purity serves as a shield. That armor enables a spotless life that discerns the character and author of enticing, artful, strong temptation, resists Satan on every hand, and leaves no inclination to step off the path of strict rectitude into impurity in words, appearance and association.

In the family circle as elsewhere every one must put on the whole armor with words and works after the works of Christ, standing wholly under the control of Jesus Christ. Keeping a firm hold from above to stand against Satan in the family means that instead of becoming his agents by speaking harsh, unkind, unsympathetic words that cast a shadow and will meet the speaker again in the day of judgment, believers reflect light by revealing Christ's Spirit in courtesy, love, tenderness, compassion and Christlike kindness in the home. The preparedness it calls for is first gained and proved in the home through faithful performance of home duties, spiritual progress and perfection of Christian character, with family members seeking with earnest humble hearts to know that Christ abides in the heart, and this home preparation is then carried into missionary work abroad and into abundant work in the church.

Parents must put on the whole armor and gird themselves for the battle of managing, guiding and educating their children in perfect harmony with God's Word and divine plan. This putting on is trustful prayerful human effort in studying and obeying His Word, following it in conduct and using it in directing children, teaching them by example to be missionaries, keeping spiritual interests fresh in the home, teaching them to bear responsibilities, and laboring in unselfish persevering effort for their conversion. God aids and encourages every movement made in the right direction, working with power with parents who awake to their sacred responsibility and cooperating with them as they carefully train their children aright and work out their own and their children's salvation.

Youth must be taught to know God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent, and then choose to stand under the blood-stained banner of Prince Emmanuel and put on the whole armor of God, so they can fight the battles of the Lord manfully and gain the victory in His power. Their intellect and reason, given by God, must be kept in touch with the Lord to work with Him and for Him, not made workshops for the devil, and they must not be sent into the world loaded with worldly schooling as weapons against God. Constant Bible study gives young people strength for resisting temptation and proclaiming truth, and wearing every piece equips them to resist the tempter and overcome the wicked one and the wickedness prevailing in the world, with confession of sin and reliance on God's power protecting against Satan's sophistry while God watches over them and gives strength as they strive for heaven. The whole armor must be put on in order to stand fully and entirely awake to the tremendous issues to be met which will test every soul having knowledge of present truth, so youth need every advantage through deliberate education in truth and righteousness in every grade by the very best abilities, not left at haphazard or after a slack makeshift. Young men as well as those of mature age must awake to God-given responsibility and gird on the armor readily and zealously to do the work of faithful soldiers, with the Spirit from heaven working with them to surmount obstacles, hold vantage ground above the enemy, and realize great results in the whitening harvest fields, striving to overcome every defect with power from the Lord for victory after victory.

Keeping on the heavenly armor in sanitarium and medical work is a strict guard over self, kept on continually. It means reserve in word and action, modesty, kindness and courtesy without freedom toward men, never showing the slightest freedom when speaking to a married man, being kind and courteous but never free, and abstaining from every appearance of evil. This is required to stay connected with sanitarium work where broken, poor shipwrecked souls seek refuge as a haven, because observant eyes watch conduct to judge whether workers are indeed children of God, and any unguarded word or action gives wicked men occasion to speak evil of the truth; without this armor connection with the sanitarium should be severed.

It means putting on God's strength and not human armor, keeping God's glory ever in view, with eyes anointed to look deeper and see afar off what the world is — its dishonesty, craftiness, selfish eye-service, pretence, boasting, lack of fair honest dealing in ordinary life, and grasping covetousness — and taking a stand by precept and example to represent Christ and convert souls from the world by sound principles, firm integrity, hatred of all dissembling, and holy boldness in acknowledging Christ. It means not letting the world convert you, holding fast profession of faith and maintaining religious principles firmly but not stubbornly, letting religion be in no other man's keeping, honoring the cross of Christ, standing in God not to be bought or sold to reveal Christian fortitude, serving no man through fear of what he can do, depending on no other man's conscience, and preserving the moral independence and freedom to exercise God-given ability that Christ died to give, circumscribed by no man or council unless there is decided evidence they are worked by the Holy Spirit. Because a great crisis is upon us every soul must gird himself for the spiritual conflict ahead, each doing his own work and making his own decisions, refusing to sustain another in a wrong course, refusing the world's plans, customs and conniving, giving no room to selfishness, dishonesty and craftiness, keeping the eye single to God's glory and standing stable, brave and bold in Christian principles with a conscience cleansed, refined and ennobled by obedience. This includes refusing to act as conscience and detectives over brethren and instead being just as watchful and critical over one's own spirit, temperament and words, lest God be dishonored and truth misrepresented, by which self-watchfulness discernment is greatly improved and the truth, the living Word, becomes as fire shut up in the bones shining forth in clear unmistakable distinctness representing Christ.

The divine armor that Satan wants to strip away by setting every conceivable power at work to discourage and make fainthearted is kept by doing the best one can without worry, staying cheerful, trusting in Jesus like a little child, finding daily rest and peace close by His side, and accepting human limits and need for rest because mortals cannot bear constant strain. In that armor the righteousness of Christ surrounds the believer as a garment, Jesus Himself makes the light shine through, and all knowledge and wisdom come from the Holy One of Israel who will not fail nor be discouraged.

Every believer stands on trial before heavenly intelligences as a faithful armor-bearer in war against mighty powers of darkness. Keeping the armor means advancing in knowledge of truth and of God's love, gaining greater wisdom day by day as responsibilities increase and new fields open, and working with an eye single to God's glory as an example to others. The idea of once in grace always in grace fails the test, because one who does not increase grows weak in spirituality and brotherly love, is thrown off guard when entrusted with responsibility, gives God-given strength and influence to the enemy when he misuses speech to misrepresent, misjudge and depreciate, and lets light grow dim until it flickers into darkness and the candlestick is shaken and moved out of its place unless he repents. Taking the whole armor of righteousness is personal duty and privilege to represent Christ under insult and provocation, having Jesus close beside every moment as counsellor and refuge, grasping Christ's grace and the Holy Spirit as God's gift, and being strengthened with all might in the inner man so thoughts stay calm on Jesus, nerves are not worn, self-control is kept and actions are manful and noble, opening the windows of the mind and the door of the heart to let heaven's sunshine flood mind and soul temple so religion influences and blesses and joy in Christ becomes a permanent state of the heart.

Gospel Ministry and Mission

Ministers as watchmen on the walls of Zion live amid the closing scenes of earth's history and must put on the whole armor to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might, to stand against the wiles of the devil and to withstand in the evil day. They must walk in every ray of light as Christ is in the light, hold to Christ who gave His life for the life of the world, and discern and give with a certain sound the messages due at this time, lest souls be quieted to sleep unto eternal loss. They are generals in the army of the great King in war against the great rebel leader and his host, and must preach the Word and speak with the authority of Scripture, following plainly the directions for the Christian armor. All connected with preaching and publishing present truth must keep on every piece continually because Satan is artful, busy and active and brings his special power to bear upon them as special marks to attack. To sympathize with the enemy, talk out doubt and unbelief, or remove any portion is to expose the cause of God and the sacred truths of His word to reproach, open the weakest points to the deadliest foe, and show lack of wisdom, blindness and foolish generalship. When the armor is removed Satan hurls in his poisoned arrows, the flock is endangered, truth is exposed to ridicule, the hands of rebel leaders are strengthened, workers are weakened, and Satan and his hellish clan rear their heads in triumph and exult over the victory allowed them. True generalship never sacrifices the truth but guards the gospel from the insults of the ungodly, willing to sacrifice life and shed blood in its defense rather than allow them to triumph, and all who make Jesus their righteousness and defense will be especially sustained because Jesus lives.

Unfaithful, weak and tottering ministers need to be torn to pieces and made over new and must cease helping others until they are converted. To trust human judgment as sufficient, feel no need of prayer, and lack the Spirit of Christ and discernment of where the Spirit of God is and what true Christian experience is, is to enter the work unarmed and unarmored as soldiers, leaving judgment open to the guidance of the enemy of all good. The result is spiritless preaching and discourses, obstructed channels through which the living water of life will not and refuses to flow, and a dense fog of lukewarmness and sinfulness that the light of heaven cannot penetrate.

Victories in camp-meeting work come by putting on the whole armor presented by the Captain of the Lord's host, whom God stands ready to furnish with light and grace and power to use helmet and sword. Every soldier is to stand firm in the faith, and when assailed be ever ready with It is written, using words of divine wisdom and not human wisdom, keeping eyes fixed on Christ while praying always with perseverance and supplication for all saints. Those carrying truth where Satan contests every point and every inch of ground because God has precious souls there must gird on every piece provided and not fail or be discouraged. Taking the armor means standing at the post as a faithful sentinel, giving the enemy no quarter, refusing to leave the field, making God the trust for strength and blessing, exposing error in its deceptive and fatal character, showing truth as firm as the eternal hills, defending the truth people need, and pressing the battle to the gates because the God of Israel is on the side of truth and righteousness.

Taking helmet and sword is practical medical missionary work of a character testifying to the sanctifying power of truth upon human minds, enabling standing in the evil day against wiles in a wrestling not against flesh and blood but against principalities, powers, rulers of darkness, and spiritual wickedness in high places, quenching all fiery darts, joined with truth, righteousness, gospel of peace, faith, and persevering prayer in the Spirit for all saints. Ministers, physicians and medical missionary workers need real conversion, reformation, humiliation of heart, and hearts changed and brought under control of the Holy Spirit to meet God and stand as brave soldiers against the wiles, to withstand and having done all to stand. Physicians must put on the heavenly armor which is the equipment of God's Word, relying not on own wisdom but God's wisdom, standing firmly under the banner of the third angel's message and fighting the good fight of faith perseveringly and successfully. The armor gives security against falling into sin and safeguard against every temptation and impropriety in thought, word or deed by keeping constantly under the molding influence of the Holy Spirit, engaging actively in truth and holiness, discharging every God-given duty while taking no burden God has not laid, and following a Leader never overcome by evil. True medical missionaries must be wide awake and vigilant, loyal to Christ as Leader shown by obeying His commandments, remaining vigilant and fighting faithfully, for no one can lead souls destitute of wisdom, sanctification and righteousness into an experience of which he is not a partaker, and those who have not tasted God's rich blessing will make little of blessings others received.

For difficult and peculiar fields the sufficiency and defense to withstand and having done all to stand is in the preparation of the gospel, with wisdom given to all who ask. Workers must study Christ's methods and not bring peculiar traits into the work, but cut away inherited or cultivated traits so the Spirit of Christ takes possession of organs of speech and mental, physical and moral powers, lest Satan work upon those traits with masterly power to create defeat just when there should be victory and loss to God's cause. Remaining long braced for battle against continually creeping evils affects manner of presenting truth, so after such warfare effort must be made to unlearn harshness and be reconverted to present principles with patience, kindness, compassion and tenderness.

Workers obeying its words clearly present strong reasons of faith, sharing truths people need, for the Word of God is the sword of the Spirit and salvation the helmet. Taking the armor means buckling on for steady united movement in Bible order, terrible as an army with banners, not tarrying but going quickly to give explanation of truth from the Word, expecting trials and fighting the good fight with God's angel going before so souls benefit and receive truth. All believers are called to put on the gospel armor and stand firm by distributing literature, making most of every opportunity to arrest unbelievers' attention, and carrying warning to high and low and with united determined effort into the cities with no delay. Ministers are not to hover over churches but proclaim truth to those who do not know it, arousing those who never heard and giving opportunity to hear reasons of faith, while those with burden show it and lay members with means reconsecrate, let means come in, resist temptation to commercial enterprises, and do appointed work proclaiming the message worldwide in harmony with the Lord God and Christ His only begotten Son.

Paul had on the whole armor in stern spiritual conflict, pressing forward despite declining physical strength and the enemy's opposition, faithfully and unflinchingly proclaiming the gospel. Being thus clad enables pressing forward and remaining triumphant and cheerful in combat, with victory sustained by fixing gaze on high on the reward of the faithful. The disciples' weapons likewise were the word of God and the Spirit of God, and clothed with divine armor after the Holy Spirit was poured out they went as witnesses to Christ's birth and death. Though once helpless and discouraged they used no earthly weapons but word and Spirit and triumphed over opposition through truth.

Aged messengers in the work since the passing of the time in 1844 are to stand in the southern field, blessed with great light and sustained in arduous work, respected as chosen precious self-sacrificing workers who fit up men and women to proclaim with faith, hope, courage and wisdom. Perplexity from misleading theories taken from misused texts is to be met not with controversy but by presenting clear straight truths God has vindicated, standing with whole armor on because God gave truth to vindicate. They are Christ's soldiers, taught of God and guided by angels giving instruction to men, to stand fast ever working on the affirmative side, refusing to exchange instruction from God for science falsely so called.

The church at Glendale must awake from spiritual indifference and put on the whole armor, rooting selfishness out, seeking the Lord earnestly, revealing sanctifying power of truth daily, praying much, practicing self-denial, and cooperating with the evangelist God placed among believers. Putting on the armor means laboring as fishers of men and joining together to establish the struggling sanitarium as an institution after God's order and to take part in giving the message to reach others. Workers in the South need to stand firmly with armor on and trust the Lord for strength, and ministers and medical missionaries must put on the whole armor to go forth combining teaching and healing in Washington and Baltimore and many other large cities of the South and East. Coming to the help of the Lord against mighty powers of darkness they clear the King's highway, lift the standard higher and still higher, and proclaim a decided message with certain sound of the trumpet.

Every church member, not only those called to ministry, must stand equipped, put on Christ's righteousness which is the whole armor, and begin to work even in a little thing instead of remaining useless without God and without hope. Putting it on gives personal experience so none depends on the minister, brings God as helper with Christ at the right hand, and opens same help to high and low, rich and poor, with ten thousand times ten thousand heavenly beings in His holy place bidden by Christ to go and work for the weakest trusting saint. Believers thus wear it as courageous workers for Christ. Faith in God's power as truth makes even weak or timid believers strong and courageous in missionary work to wield truth in seeking souls, for the sword of the Spirit is the sword of truth. The Word as spiritual weapon sustains amid danger, and the Bible carried and kept open gives confidence in God's help.

The armor is not any one individual's but given by God for the battlefield to be worn and used together, with every soldier in the day of God's preparation putting it on and preparing for battle. There is to be no strife, difference, pride of opinion, selfishness or seeking supremacy, but those sanctified through truth are to be one, reaching highest efficiency, setting every human agency to highest service with pledged divine cooperation of heaven. Workers counsel together with much earnest prayer and humility, esteeming each other better than themselves, maintaining perfect unity and union of effort, venturing and running risks and doing best under all circumstances in Christian charity and love, advancing together trusting Lord and heavenly allies for victory. This call comes while each angel is at his post, unknown heavenly worlds watch in suspense, powers under the prince of darkness prepare vials of wrath, and Zion is to arise and shine because God's glory is risen upon her. Carefully following the Lord's directions about the armor leads workers to walk humbly and act discreetly, without binding others to human plans or letting human rules control work, and no one lords it over God's people.

Vigilance to the End

The whole armor must be taken, for one or two pieces are not enough and no piece is to be left off, so that the whole body is prepared for warfare against principalities and powers and spiritual wickedness in high places, with helmet as salvation and the sword of the Spirit as the word of God, worn continually in working and sleeping in constant duty against creeping evils and every sophistry and fallacy to blind minds, under Christ as Captain as when He led Israel forty years in the wilderness, with ministers and medical missionaries watching for souls and their own souls in holiness to sit with Him on His throne, safe from defeat to receive the overcomer's reward.
It must be kept on without laying aside, because faith will be tested in severe and trying ways and trials will come, and without every piece believers will be overcome by trials they are not ready to meet, needing the whole armor of righteousness to overcome and keep victory over darkness, to withstand conflicts and keep purity untarnished, holding fast the Word to stand firm, with vast resources and moral power to do righteousness under adversity as trial disciplines and makes workers better and abler.
Life is continual conflict with no rest or repose, and the armor is laid off only to wear a conqueror's crown purchased by agony and blood when the Master closes the work and releases from service, girded on anew to stand at post, resist the devil and fight manfully, laid at Christ's feet at release, kept on in resisting evil with faithfulness and perseverance rather than desertion.
After the midnight cry and shut door of 1844 every inch of ground must be fought against Satan come down in great power knowing his time is short, by having the commandments written in heart and mind and going strong and bold crying the commandments and the testimony of Jesus even when opposers are many and tall like the sons of Anak, holding truth until sealing is finished, Jesus steps out from between God and man, the time of trouble such as never was comes, and the Lord comes to be met in peace.
Holding fast the prophetic experience and light that made Adventists, and the path God led in the past, keeps from being diverted and unsettled by theories continually agitated, enabling both those who lived through the unfolding of prophecies and those who did not to hold confidence and the message of truth firm unto the end, standing with loins girt about with truth.
Putting it on now while probation continues and Christ is ever willing to help resist evil is urgent because iniquity fills the world and the cities as in the days of Noah, lest believers drift down the current and be swallowed with destruction, for as men resist the Spirit He will be less manifested and angels will fold wings and cease watchcare, and after warning there will be no more prevailing prayers or words of peace and wrongs cannot be righted, with character records kept in books for judgment.
The great crisis with sharp work, close trying tests, the Sunday movement and Sunday laws must be met by every minister and evangelist and church member putting on the whole armor now, by working and watching and praying, humbling hearts, crying aloud and sparing not, making plain the words of truth with the Bible explaining the Bible and fewer of men's words for tenfold greater influence, walking humbly in sanctification, taking a self-denying liberal stand free from covetousness, and proclaiming worldwide the gospel as God's power unto salvation and repentance and conversion.
In crisis and season of calamity many souls called out of the world and out of the churches, even the Catholic church, will come to the front, see the battle coming, give the trumpet a certain sound by taking up the whole armor, exalting the law, adhering to the faith of Jesus, and maintaining religious liberty the Reformers defended with toil and sacrifice of life, with zeal far exceeding former proclaimers as eleventh-hour laborers receiving their penny, equipped to press the battle to the enemy's stronghold and to prepare others with an experience that will stand examination.
It enables standing firmly with the third angel's message as burden, as gospel of peace and righteousness and truth, refusing lines that misplace prophecy and counterwork revealed truth, standing bravely and boldly at post against detraction and falsehood amid closing scenes by answering It is written, fighting the good fight with Father, Son and Holy Spirit as efficiency, heaven's strength at command, barricaded by an impregnable wall.
It distinguishes those bearing God's seal by steadfast principle and resistance to corruption from those receiving the beast's mark, requiring righteousness as protection against prevailing sin, and faithful obedience to all statutes and commandments to bring conviction to unbelievers and be ready for coming trials.
Staying awake, praying in the Spirit and persevering keeps discernment, for without it the sense of truth's power is lost, sacred things become common, and guides become weak and unsafe, while prayer fortifies those equipped with salvation and the Word; all who know truth must awake for perilous times, place body, soul and spirit under God's discipline, stay wide awake on guard for the enemy is on track, follow directions in prophecy, Word, testimonies and books making plain present duty, heeding warnings line upon line with no excuse, for becoming so active as to have no time to pray means the armor is not on.
It is taken anew after weariness, discouragement or laying down through backsliding and returning habits threatening happiness, meaning renewed warfare in view of eternal life with persistent energy, patient industry and unwearied zeal, rising to toil for self-conquest and perfection by washing the robe white in the Lamb's blood, breaking from deception, refusing evil angels, lying dreams and whisperings before the Spirit is grieved away, to lay hold on everlasting life and soon lay off armor for the crown.
Success needs order and harmonious action, cheerfulness, hope, faith, courage for hardest battles ending in victory and reward, moving steadily forward in fear and love of God without being swayed by criticism, reproach, censure or fault-finding, bearing reproach as Christ bore more, keeping testimony strong rather than weakening it to avoid criticism, acting like men waiting for the Lord in clouds with converting power to hunt and fish for men perseveringly whether fish are caught or not.
Strength is in the Lord's might, not personal character, human armor, learning or plans, and each must act an individual part, cherish individual duty, strengthen spiritual consciousness by continual faith, look to God, plead assurance, hang the helpless soul on invisible power, make the Word the counsellor, resist intelligently with faith quenching darts from whatever source, abide in Christ growing in grace since without Him nothing can be done, reveal deeper piety with responsibility, and do all humanly possible to cooperate with God then stand.
Those girded study and take the Word to have fresh truth to share, bring thoughts, motives and desires into obedience, prepare to meet the Bridegroom while helping others see danger and come to Christ, take eyes from earth and center mind on heavenly things amid temptation, refuse the world's standard which will count nothing in God's day and win no Well done, to secure entrance to the city which is to be won or lost.
Readiness means instant action sick or well at the Captain's command, listening for His word and doing the Master's will at once without consulting ease, convenience, pleasure or temporal employment, staying with the great work of the last message of mercy and dwelling on present truth, refusing to leave it to answer falsehoods, misrepresentations and slander by which Satan diverts minds from present truth and Christ's coming, in continual conflict with no rest.
It prepares for the coming conflict between darkness and the Prince of Light by strengthening from the Bible and faithfulness to duty to stand bravely and together without evading or teaching evasion, and by standing strong and pressing forward with the third angel's message which will triumph.
Keeping it requires quick discernment of danger, seeing sin's hateful character and expelling it, casting every idol from the heart, refusing dominion of evil, divided service and lust warring against the Spirit, putting eternity and being saved before every enterprise, putting picture-idols and many photographs out of sight as coming between God and soul, feeling reforming power in schools and sanitariums with high consecration and missionary self-denial, and stewarding money and talents to return increase at His coming, clothed by faith with Christ's acceptable righteousness and Jesus' strength to resist the serpent's wiles.
Students suspended are thrust onto Satan's battleground without armor or defense as easy prey to his devices, while students relying on God through Christ given as ransom resist evil and stay loyal, becoming prepared through grace and study of the Word to grow purer and stronger for useful service in active resistance.
It equips for faithful witness even unto death before persecutors demanding abandonment of faith or death, with faith and hope untaken though bodies are killed, looking to immortality at the resurrection of the just, as preparation to meet death if it must come, while God spares lives and holds back judgment to give repentance, and continuing in wicked works destroying health and reason such as liquor-selling rejects mercy unto destruction.
It must be kept on continually against doctrinal error about prophetic time and definite time preaching, with readiness to defend truth and contend faithfully through God's Word as standard and sword, while humble laborers in faith and love receive reward.
Victory depends on watching and praying with much prayer, living connection and grace sufficient in every emergency to elevate above the common and sensual, doing good and helping the needy, while angels keep eyes constantly on fighters, building a barrier of righteousness around soul and church against flood-like wickedness and hidden snares on right and left amid abounding iniquity, passing through dark shadow by living faith to find Christ, prepared through sanctified experience to show strength.
It calls all to awake from sleep, comprehend duty to the world at this stage of history, work the cities against wickedness, and press with urgency into soul-saving with God's angel going before to help others receive truth, bringing sanctification by truth and help from the Lord against faintheartedness, fear, failure and discouragement, carrying work forward earnestly, lovingly and vigorously, ready to endure trials and fight the good fight.
It means fighting manfully without hanging back on the outskirts lest shaking cast one into enemy ranks as prey and ruin, holding God's honor and truth as one's own and resisting every attack as a personal wound, throwing all into active service unentrapped by masterly devices, venturing on His word and walking by faith not sight in step with the Captain, refusing neutrality and non-committal indifference, refusing to pull weapons from fellow fighters or hinder them for not working as expected, while angels ascend and descend to defend fighters.
It means standing firm for right with holy boldness, not depressed by sin or difficulties on right and left, loyal to God and commandments bearing witness amid opposition, against Satan's new superstitions and light-clad false theories to deceive if possible the very elect, tested by law and testimony, watching, praying, trusting the living Word as faithful watchmen, entering each battle in full faith as more than conquerors, bearing the solemn message with confidence in Christ and sure prophecy not human theories.
It protects against provocation to rash words, enabling victory by relying on God and remaining in Christ, while giving way to one's own spirit dishonors God; the sword drawn quickly by It is written is a standard and storehouse of promises giving strength against glowing prospects and baits, with unseen help near, for delay brings weakness and defeat, while shield of faith keeps encouraged hearts and light chasing darkness without helpless despondency.
It belongs to solemn last days when signs show the end near and the Spirit withdraws from wicked nations, requiring standing in God's strength with every piece on, staying awake as faithful watchmen to sound the last warning, prepare the world for closing scenes and prepare the church that those with light are awake.
It equips soldiers in Europe against tradition, superstition and error through thorough drill like military training, earnest and painstaking preparation to pitch tents, move cannon, care for wounded and charge, learning to obey before commanding, waking, exercising ability by use, working while able by Christ's grace, sharing His self-denial instead of seeking ease, forgetting infirmities at trumpet call, lifting the standard under orders without cowardice or compromise, unearthing buried talents because the Lord is coming.
It is pledged by those enlisted under Jesus' banner as His separate army come out from the world to make aggressive warfare against sin and iniquity in loyalty to King Jesus, girding on to make constant advancement, making most of capabilities, improving talents utmost, heeding reproof, correcting mistakes, increasing in fear of the Lord with knowledge in reverence, with young men and women encouraged therein.
It fits for finding and saving souls with cheerfulness and full joy, keeping commandments and abiding in love never with sadness, cooperating with divine power to receive talent, courage, perseverance, faith and tact for warning work.
It prepares to speak publicly with God sustaining all who put it on, to renew resolve despite illness and difficulty to speak to others, and to labor daily clothed in full armor with prayer, watchfulness and perseverance doing all for perishing souls while awaiting Christ in communion, remaining equipped.
It requires truth as fixed conviction governing heart and life, not religion handed down from fathers, daily strengthened by humble sincere prayer and reading and held in God's strength, through heart-searching advancing heavenward and leading others safely, feeding on Christ to abide, discerning delusions as doers, studied and practiced in faithful service.
It gives vast resources and moral power to do righteousness under all circumstances and blasts of adversity, making workers better and abler as trial tests and disciplines unto success, never to be laid off for one victory ends not assaults, requiring partaking divine nature, constant resistance trusting Christ's strength, seeking not meager grace but irrepressible joy.
It consecrates the whole person and all powers to pure ends under Christ's control for truth and righteousness, revealing Christ in thought, word and deed as laborers together with God, with self crucified so Christ lives as hope of glory, reaching forward growing in grace and knowledge, righteousness wrought by mighty power giving power from above to weakness laying hold on the Lord.
It means living by faith of the Son grasping unseen eternal realities to appear with Christ in glory under His banner, serving as disciplined soldiers marshalled away from self-seeking, not living for self, found faithful as stewards, for those seeing no work beyond self do not wear it and truth is not savor of life to them or through them.
It calls for fewer responsibilities, giving no stumbling by example, being strong in the Lord, considering these words, doing all humanly possible to make peace, enduring hardship and resisting opposing forces without losing courage or despondency, fighting valiantly with safety by faith at Jesus' feet.
It warns against self-pity, calls to prepare for work and responsibilities before them amid perils, and exposes viewing God's work in distorted light so what should bring joy and peace looks inconsistent, and fighting it from prejudice and unbelief, as putting on Satan's armor against it.
It means standing at post as faithful sentinel giving no quarter amid increased bitterness and opposition, holding up on the banner the commandments and faith of Jesus with continual prayer and perseverance, feeding on the Son by studying and practicing the sword instead of judging brethren, refusing to favor any man in humble sincerity.
It requires earnest prayer to fight the good fight inch by inch, for every inch is disputed, wrestling not against flesh and blood but principalities, powers, rulers of darkness and spiritual wickedness, spending no strength criticizing brethren, with loins girt with truth and breastplate of righteousness, pressing to find entrance everywhere, laboring till souls embrace truth and Sabbath obedience from transgression to righteousness, in preparation for probation's close and the Master's approval.
It is practiced as well as preached in coming to the Lord's help against the mighty, instead of standing with the world against Christ on whom blessing and cooperation depend, clearing the mind from selfish indulgence in eating, drinking and dressing.
It equips defenders to face crisis, uphold law, remain faithful to Jesus and defend religious liberty, standing equipped with righteousness in last battles with safety by faith at Jesus' feet.
It enables resisting oppression with faith, fasting and prayer to beat Satan back, and when victory is not first gained fasting and praying for sure triumph, standing ready to help souls in need while Jesus' sanctuary work is almost finished and work must be done while day lasts.
It equips to stand against Satan's efforts to tear down faith in the third angel's message and against deceptive arguments, keeping the mind filled with scriptural truths, knowing the Word, guided by the Spirit to go conquering.
It is kept by remembering Christ the unchanging Rock and looking continually to Him, heeding every warning and trusting and obeying His words against false presentations, not trusting changeable men nor making flesh an arm, lest brethren changed by subtle reasoning and whisperings divert minds to falsities even while preaching theory of truth, followed at peril, to gain what Christ suffered to make possible.
It means refusing to act as conscience and detectives over brethren but watching one's own spirit, temperament and words lest God be dishonored, greatly improving discernment so the living Word becomes fire shut up in bones shining distinctly to represent Christ, rather than bracing to resist reflections on views when challenged.
It means buckling on for steady united movement in Bible order terrible as an army with banners, going quickly to explain truth from the Word, expecting trials and fighting the good fight with God's angel going before so souls benefit and receive truth and endure trials.
It means working earnestly with self-denial and sacrifice to meet emergencies, laboring unselfishly through weariness, suffering, heat and cold, fighting through difficulty to carry work forward, going with hope, courage, faith and cheerfulness holding firmly, refusing to talk embarrassments or past sacrifices or put discouragement before fellow workers, but strengthening them to look up, forget self and cling to God.
It means hiding in Jesus and exalting Christ not personal ideas, obeying the Captain's orders under His banner alone to fight enemies not fellow soldiers, building His kingdom as laborers together with God in view of heaven where each does duty.
It means standing ready to help needy souls, faithfully doing given work such as carrying books of present truth, working amid Satan's efforts to confuse minds and keep people from interest in truth.
It guards the flock through true faith, sincere prayer, Christ's Spirit and discernment of His working and true experience, advancing by faith under Spirit control with courage, perseverance and readiness for trials, accompanied by God's help at His work, for trusting human judgment alone without prayer leaves ministers unarmed with spiritless discourses and fog that light cannot penetrate.
It arms the soul by practical acquaintance with truth to meet strongest opposition, keeping the sword polished and effective as a sharp two-edged sword by constant thoughtful meditation and searching full of promises giving comfort, hope, joy, faith and courage, not rusting unused nor exchanged for broken cisterns leaving inefficiency, putting on every piece to overcome the wicked one with the Word abiding and constantly studied, holding truth against supposition and sophistry, confessing sins and relying on power so sophistry has no power.
It equips soldiers to remain loyal amid opposition bearing witness to Christ and commandments, holding up Christ able to save to the uttermost while putting away sin God hates, urgent as iniquity abounds, love waxes cold and light flashes on every seeker's path, requiring the whole armor for success.
It requires putting on all of it through repentance, trusting the living God, rising above ever-remaining hindrances with God-given purpose, fighting manfully, doing best with talents in restitution, redeeming time in special service, gaining respect as men of opportunity, standing ready for the great review doing given work, for God helps those who help themselves and money never qualifies for responsibility.
It prepares missionary work to stand solid on eternal truth and rectitude proportionate to great needs, meeting in human flesh powers of darkness in human flesh, placing daily on the right side connected with Christ with angels round about doing angels' work, not trifling with salvation, saving souls who may suddenly plunge into eternity, united to carry final warning and light to those without it.
It requires gospel shoes meaning going to impart truth from place to place on foot as Christ did letting light shine and converting numbers, not shutting up in a little section or sitting idle at home, as minutemen ready at a moment with every piece on, with grace given for going rejoiced in wholeheartedly.
It calls soldiers to listen attentively to warnings, forever remove works of sin and uncleanness, and put on Christ's righteousness as proof against all temptations, making faithful sentinels through decided change and loyalty.
It makes partners with Jesus with self hid in God and hearts in sympathy, practicing truth in humble dependence not self-assurance, passing on His love as messengers of mercy at His charges under His banner, faithful by precept and example to His agencies for extending truth and righteousness.
It calls servants as minutemen armed for defense of needed truth ever ready to unsheathe the sword, striving, laboring, fighting the good fight, praying in confidence and sincerity, studying to win confidence in approach.
It requires ministers to exalt truth by faithfully using talents, working in harmony, advancing God's work with Christ's Spirit, sowing no doubt, putting on every piece to succeed and triumph with truth.
It is the Lord's orders and prescription for health and power bringing victory through Christ when obeyed with divine help, enabling resistance to schemes, deception and false teachings by keeping the Word at hand and answering It is written as Christ did, standing firm as loyal soldiers.
