The command to bring Vashti with the royal crown was issued by a king impaired by wine, in the midst of indulgence and excess that did not glorify God. He summoned her to appear before his feast so that the people and the princes present could gaze upon her beauty, for she was fair to look upon. Vashti refused to come, acting with a pure and clear conscience in declining to be made such a spectacle. She expected that once the king regained sober judgment he would approve her choice. Yet God restrained events and worked through the consequences of the king's actions, using them to bring Esther to the Medo-Persian throne and to accomplish His purposes for Israel.
