King Ahasuerus Angry at Vashti's Refusalby emmanuel_higgins

Esther 1:12

But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.

The command to Vashti was given while the king was under the influence of wine, which had impaired his judgment and made the command unwise. He wanted the wine-besotted men at his feast to gaze upon her beauty. She refused in order to remain at the head of the women of the court, acting for her husband's sake as well as her own.

She refused with a pure conscience and expected the king to approve her decision once he had recovered his reason. Instead his anger burned against her because of her refusal. His advisers argued that allowing her refusal to stand would give women a power to their own harm. Although the indulgence surrounding the episode did not glorify God, God made the resulting events work for Israel's good, showing that He can carry out His purposes through rulers and others even when their conduct is wrong.
