Ahasuerus turned to the wise men who understood the times and who were versed in law and judgment to determine what should be done concerning Vashti. That counsel was sought in the midst of indulgence under the influence of wine, a course that brought no glory to God. Both the king and his counselors were under the effect of wine, and for that reason they were unable to offer sound counsel or to judge the case rightly.
