In the third year of his reign Ahasuerus made a feast for all his princes and his servants, with the power of Persia and Media and the nobles and princes of the provinces before him. The gathering brought the leaders of the Persian and Median empire together with the provincial nobles into his presence. The feast was a display of the riches and majesty of his kingdom and continued for one hundred and eighty days.
Indulgence in wine at such a feast brings no glory to God. Even so, God is able to restrain the wrongdoing of men and to carry out His purposes through rulers who do not listen to His wisdom. Esther’s elevation to the throne of the Medo-Persian kingdom served God’s purpose for Israel. Events shaped under the influence of wine were overruled for the good of Israel.
