Esther 1:4

When he shewed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honour of his excellent majesty many days, even an hundred and fourscore days.

In the third year of his reign at Shushan, Ahasuerus made a prolonged display of the wealth of his kingdom and the splendor of his majesty. Those honored with the sight were his princes and servants, gathered to behold his riches and excellent greatness. The showing continued many days, even a hundred and fourscore days, or one hundred eighty days in all.

The display belonged to an occasion of indulgence that did not glorify God. The events surrounding the king's exhibition of wealth and majesty unfolded under the influence of much wine. Yet God worked through those very events to accomplish His purposes for Israel. He can guide rulers and turn human actions to serve His purposes even when they follow wrong practices and fail to acknowledge His wisdom.
