Esther 3:6

And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai: wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.

Haman thought it scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone, and because Mordecai was a Jew his hatred of Mordecai grew into a plot to destroy all the Jews throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus as Mordecai's people. His malice toward the one man thus made the whole people his target. Mordecai had done Haman no harm; his offense was refusing to give Haman the reverence that belongs to God alone.

The decree of destruction against the Jews was secured through false pretenses, false claims, and misrepresentation of the people. Behind Haman's plot was Satan's effort to oppose God's purpose and bring suffering to God's people by removing those who preserved the knowledge of the true God. Yet the enemy's purpose in this design was thwarted, for God's power defeated the plot in Mordecai's and Esther's time.

The episode foreshadows a future decree against God's people over Sabbath observance, prompted by hostility toward those who refuse to worship the idol sabbath. In that time Satan will use religious powers and falsehood to seek the death of those who remain faithful. As God defeated the plot then, God's people in the future crisis can trust that His power will defeat such plots. The verse teaches that God's people must remain true to Him, whatever the cost.
