Esther 3:7

In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, to the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar.

This verse stands within the record of Haman's plot to destroy the Jews, a scheme driven by his malice toward Mordecai because Mordecai refused to render to him the reverence that belongs to God alone. The Persian decree of extermination was obtained by false pretenses and by misrepresentation of the character and conduct of the Jews. That plot was an effort by Satan to wipe out those who preserved the knowledge of the true God, yet the designs of their enemies were brought to defeat.
