Esther 4:17

So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.

The verse stands at the moment when the Jews faced imminent slaughter under Haman's plan and the king's decree in the reign of Ahasuerus. Mordecai agreed to Esther's request and did all she commanded, gathering the Jews in Shushan and joining them in fasting for her before she approached the king. Esther directed the Jews to gather and fast for her, fasting and praying herself, and resolved to go in to the king though it was against the law, declaring if I perish, I perish.

Her resolve was faithfulness to the responsibility her position gave her, trusting God with the outcome. The crisis was met through the efforts and prayers of Esther, Mordecai, and their people. United prayer turned the danger aside, and great joy followed. Through her courage deliverance came to her people.

The verse thus belongs to God's providential deliverance of the Jews from Haman's plot to destroy them. Mordecai's prayer was answered, after which Haman was hanged and Israel was freed. In prophecy the episode belongs to Satan's attempt through Medo-Persia, the second head of the satanic beast system of government, to destroy all God's people under Ahasuerus through Haman, the woman through whom the Man-child should come, but God frustrated his purpose.
