Exodus 16:32

And Moses said, This is the thing which the LORD commandeth, Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations; that they may see the bread wherewith I have fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt.

Moses was commanded to have an omer of manna filled and kept for future generations, so that they might see the bread with which the Lord fed Israel in the wilderness when He brought them out of the land of Egypt. That bread was provided to Israel by a miracle of God, a merciful provision showing His care for His people in their need. The manna thus preserved was angels' food, yet even with this food Israel was not satisfied.

The command to preserve it belonged to the Sabbath law, which required that they keep the Sabbath. God's giving of manna was part of an all-embracing education covering every habit of life, because everything concerning well-being is a matter of divine care and comes under divine law. Even in giving food God sought Israel's highest good, and the manna He gave in the wilderness was fitted to promote physical, mental, and moral strength, so that despite the hardships of wilderness life there was not a feeble one in all their tribes.

That miraculous provision did not remove Israel's responsibility to cooperate with God, for their moral discipline depended on each person doing a part in His service. The God who gave manna to the children of Israel in the wilderness is still our God, and as He gave bread then He now gives skill and wisdom to make wholesome, palatable foods for hygienic restaurants in the cities, giving light and knowledge to all whose desire is to glorify Him.
