Exodus 21:33

And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit, and not cover it, and an ox or an ass fall therein;

The verse belongs to the statutes and judgments given to Israel through Moses. Those laws were to be strictly obeyed, and they reveal care for the people and the high standard of the requirements placed upon them. This particular law serves to guard against injustice and to guide dealings with one another.

It holds a man accountable when he opens a pit or digs a pit and fails to cover it, if an ox or an ass falls into it. The one responsible must make compensation to the owner of the animal and take the dead animal for himself. The uncovered pit is a danger its maker knowingly leaves unrestrained for a neighbor to suffer, showing that knowingly leaving such a danger makes a person answerable for the harm that results.

In the same way, one who knowingly supplies liquor that is likely to bring violence and ruin bears responsibility for the harm that follows, just as with the uncovered pit.
