Exodus 22:17

If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.

The direction was given on Mount Sinai by Christ Jesus Himself as Teacher, speaking to Moses for Israel as part of the instruction in Exodus 19-24 that was written in a book. He is the same Teacher who afterward spoke in human flesh. It does not belong to a time without Christ nor to an inferior standard, for its requirements are exalted and are no lower than the statutes given for the present age.

It was given to guard the interests of God's people and to guard against doing injustice, guiding how people deal with one another and showing the impartiality of God's ways. It calls for all contention to cease and for people to love one another as brethren, with softened and subdued and humbled hearts. It was to be strictly obeyed by Israel and must still be obeyed and must be studied and set before people now just as verily as it was set before the children of Israel in the days of Moses.
