Exodus 22:3
If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.
Exodus 22:3 belongs to the instruction given to Moses on the mount in Exodus 19-24, which was written in a book for men to obey. That direction was given by Christ Jesus as Teacher on Mount Sinai, who has spoken in human flesh. Those laws were written to guard against doing injustice and to guide dealings with one another. They reveal concern for the poor and the impartial, high standard of the requirements.
The verse requires full restitution for theft. Its statutes are to be strictly obeyed. They are to be studied and presented before the people now just as verily as by the children of Israel in the days of Moses.
Anyone who has engaged in theft or robbery in business should humbly seek the Lord and make restitution. Contention is to cease, and all are to love as brethren with softened and subdued hearts. The principle of restitution is rigidly enforced among the Maories, showing their high sense of honor, justice, and morality. Among them a contract once made is held as ever afterward sacred.
