Exodus 22:4

If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.

This law belongs to the statutes and judgments given to Moses on the mount in Exodus 19-24 and written in a book, given by Christ Jesus Himself as Teacher on Mount Sinai. It requires that when a stolen ox, or ass, or sheep is found alive in the thief's hand, he shall restore double.

As one of the laws guarding against doing injustice and guiding dealings with one another, it shows God's careful concern for His people and the impartiality and high standard of His requirements. It is to be strictly obeyed, and it is needed now just as verily as by the children of Israel in the days of Moses, and must be studied and presented before the people in detail.

Its doctrine of restitution expresses honor, justice, and morality that is also rigidly enforced among the Maories of New Zealand. It establishes the principle of making restoration for wrongdoing, so that a person who has engaged in business theft or robbery must humbly seek the Lord and make restitution.
