Exodus 22:6
If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field, be consumed therewith; he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution. If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field, be consumed therewith; he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.
The instruction stands within what was given to Moses on the mount in Exodus 19-24, spoken by Christ Jesus Himself and written in a book as part of the laws and statutes. It belongs among those statutes given to Israel, which they were required to obey strictly. Its plain requirement is that when a fire breaks out and catches in thorns, so that stacked grain or standing grain or the field is consumed, the one who kindled the fire shall surely make restitution. Responsibility rests on the starter of the fire for the spread and the loss of crops that follows.
That requirement guards against doing injustice and protects the interests of people through an impartial rule. It was set to guide how people deal with one another in justice between neighbors. It demanded strict obedience from the children of Israel in the days of Moses. It is to be studied, presented before the people, and obeyed now just as verily as then.
Its keeping calls for all contention to cease. It calls brethren to love one another with softened and subdued hearts.
