Exodus 22:8
If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges, to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbour’s goods. If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges, to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbour’s goods.
This direction belongs to the instruction and judgments that God gave to Moses for Israel at the mount, recorded in Exodus 19-24, given by Christ Jesus Himself and written in a book. It was given to guard against doing injustice and to guide people in dealing with one another. These statutes show God's care for His people and the exalted character of His requirements. The judgments were to be strictly obeyed. The instruction is needed now just as truly as it was needed by the children of Israel in the days of Moses, and it is to be studied and set before the people in every minute particular, in jots and tittles, so that all contention ceases and hearts are softened and subdued to love one another as brethren.
