Exodus 22:9
For all manner of trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, which another challengeth to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whom the judges shall condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbour.
This direction forms part of the instruction given to Moses on the mount recorded in Exodus 19-24, among the statutes and judgments given to Israel. The Teacher who gave it on Mount Sinai is Christ Jesus speaking in human flesh. These directions are not Christless or of a lower order, but reveal the exalted and impartial nature of God's requirements. They guard the interests of God's people and include special care for the poor.
The laws written in the book guard against doing injustice and guide dealings with one another, so that all contention ceases and people love as brethren with softened and subdued hearts. Israel was to obey these statutes strictly. They are to be studied and presented before the people now just as verily as to the children of Israel in the days of Moses.
