Exodus 23:3

Neither shalt thou countenance a poor man in his cause.

Neither shalt thou countenance a poor man in his cause belongs to the instruction given to Moses on the mount in Exodus 19-24, spoken on Mount Sinai by Christ Jesus Himself, the same Teacher who afterward spoke in human flesh. That instruction must be obeyed and studied and set before the people now just as much as by the children of Israel in the days of Moses. It forbids favoring a poor man in his cause, so a judge must not let sympathy for the poor decide a legal case. It requires impartial judgment and guards against doing injustice, revealing the impartiality and high standard of God's requirements and forbidding judgment to be perverted by partiality, false causes, or bribes. It shows God guards the interests of His people by giving special direction concerning the poor, guiding dealings with one another so that all contention ceases and men love as brethren with softened and subdued hearts.
