Exodus 25:4

And blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats’ hair,

The verse names blue and purple and scarlet and fine linen and goats' hair as part of the offering God told Moses to take from Israel for the tabernacle, together with gold and silver and brass. It belongs to the instructions for building the tabernacle and sanctuary given after Israel left Egypt, given by God through Christ to Moses on the mount after the law was given from Sinai and the covenant was made and ratified. Those details were received while Moses talked with God in the cloud during forty days and forty nights, a limited time to communicate judgments and laws, covering the specifications in Exodus 24-27 including the pattern of the ark.

The purpose of the offering was to make a sanctuary so God could dwell among them, built according to His word and design and pattern. It was made to be taken from place to place so that in all the travels of Israel the knowledge of God would be made known. The materials for God's house were to come from the people's gifts and free-will offerings, taken only from every one whose heart stirred him and whose spirit made him willing. They were to be brought willingly from the heart and not compelled, even from their limited means.

The people answered with every one whose heart stirred him and whose spirit made him willing bringing the Lord's offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation, and gave so abundantly that there was more than could be used, so Moses had to tell them to stop bringing offerings. The directions called for the best the people could give, showing that what is connected with worship should be treated as sacred and made pure and tasteful rather than carelessly or cheaply. The construction called for skill and wisdom and ingenuity given by God to be used for His glory, showing that skilled manual work done with diligence and thoroughness can give supreme honor to God.

The specifications were repeated chapter after chapter to fellow workers in tentmaking while laboring quickly and skillfully with the hands, to preach the gospel by intelligent labor and to educate believers in unity. The work went forward according to God's word. The directions show that God Himself establishes His work in the place He has chosen, with willing workers doing their best under His blessing and in accordance with His will, so that His name is glorified and His truth finds standing room and the place shows forth His praise. They give certainty that the work in Washington will be established because God has said it is to be.
