The High Priest in His GarmentsBible World

Exodus 28:12

And thou shalt put the two stones upon the shoulders of the ephod for stones of memorial unto the children of Israel: and Aaron shall bear their names before the LORD upon his two shoulders for a memorial.

The ephod had gold-embroidered shoulder pieces bearing two onyx stones engraved with the names of Israel's twelve tribes. Placed on Aaron's shoulders as part of his robes for service, the stones meant he carried Israel's names before the Lord as a memorial. The heavenly sanctuary scene recalls this clothing, with Jesus wearing priestly garments with names engraved on a breastplate suspended from his shoulders.

The verse belongs to God's specific, detailed directions for the clothing of those who minister before Him. Those directions covered everything connected with His service in a particular style suited to the work of service in the holy place and the priest's office, down to the two shoulder stones.

The tabernacle garments were symbolic, so Aaron's dress had meaning and the appearance of those who serve God is to represent Him. God may be honored or dishonored by the apparel of those who officiate before Him, and He requires order in everything and especially cleanliness. Care in ministers' appearance helped teach the people reverence for God and the holiness of His work. In application, Christ's followers should be neat, modest, and pure in appearance, without dressing for fashion or display.
