Exodus 35:4
And Moses spake unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, This is the thing which the LORD commanded, saying, And Moses spake unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, This is the thing which the LORD commanded, saying,
The verse is Moses speaking the Lord's command to the whole congregation of Israel concerning the work of the sanctuary or tabernacle. That sanctuary work was to be carried out according to God's directions and with exactness, skill, wisdom, and perfection. The command was an invitation to bring free-will offerings for building and furnishing the tabernacle, accepting gifts from everyone who gave willingly from the heart. This call for offerings was extra beyond the systematic tithes and regular required gifts. God made this draft upon the people for their own good as well as to sustain His service.
Though the gold and silver are the Lord's and even souls and bodies belong to Him, and He could furnish means without asking sacrifice, He does not furnish means by creation but asks His people to return to Him that which is His own, so that all may take a part and share the blessing of giving. The appeal required no coercion or worldly entertainment, for the offerings were wholly voluntary. The people responded willingly and abundantly from their possessions, and labored gladly, until Moses and the leaders declared there was enough and more than could be used and told them to stop bringing offerings. The same principle applies to providing and purchasing property for a school to educate youth to go forth as missionaries and reveal God's salvation, so everyone who can should take an interest, open heart and purse, make free-will offerings, and have a share in the blessing.
