Exodus 39:29

And a girdle of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, of needlework; as the LORD commanded Moses.

The verse describes the finished embroidered girdle, made of fine-twined linen with blue and purple and scarlet yarn, made as the Lord commanded Moses. Its wording presents the priestly girdle as fine twisted linen worked with blue, purple, and scarlet thread.

Its account of fine linen and gold work in the tabernacle garments fits the skill in making fine linen and working gold demonstrated in the ancient world.

The verse belongs to the chiefly legislative division of Exodus in chapters 19-40, and specifically to the account in Exodus 25-40 of the wilderness tabernacle built by Israel at God's command as the earthly center of worship. Within that division the building and fitting of the tabernacle in chapters 35-40, also described as the building and setting up recorded in Exodus 33-40, follows in chronological order and carries out the instruction concerning the sanctuary given to Moses in the mount in chapters 25-31. That work led to its setting up on the first day of the first month of the second year from the Exodus.

The verse records the completion of the sanctuary furnishings and priestly garments according to God's instructions. It shows that the ark with all its furniture and equipment was built just as God directed, with explicit directions for every part, according to the divine pattern shown to Moses in the mount. It falls within the laws given through Moses, which included ceremonial laws as well as moral laws, statutes, and judgments. Those laws revealed offerings, sacrifices, and types whose substance was to be traced in the new dispensation.

The sanctuary it details was built after God redeemed Israel from Egyptian bondage with a mighty hand. After hundreds of years of slavery had left them unable to comprehend His great salvation and the character He required, God gave them a great multiple object-lesson in various forms and rites teaching the whole plan of salvation. He asked through Moses for free-will offerings of all things needed, so they would make Him a marvelously beautiful sanctuary that He might dwell among them. Its pattern was divine, given by God to Moses in the mount.

The work was properly done by Bezalel and Oholiab with other devoted men and women upon whom God placed His Spirit, for God specially endowed His workmen to build it. This teaches that God blesses workers in material things who are consecrated to Him just as He blesses workers in spiritual things. The record places at the center the holy of holies where the ark of the covenant containing God's holy law written on tables of stone was placed. The building and inaugurating of the sanctuary and its services ended with wonderful blessing and glory coming down upon the congregation and the building, whose manifestation of God's glory showed His acceptance of the people's repentance.
