Exodus 8:10
And he said, To morrow. And he said, Be it according to thy word: that thou mayest know that there is none like unto the LORD our God. And he said, To morrow. And he said, Be it according to thy word: that thou mayest know that there is none like unto the LORD our God.
Moses gave Pharaoh the honor of appointing the time when entreaty should be made that the frogs be destroyed from him and his servants and his people and his houses, that they might remain in the river only, and Pharaoh chose tomorrow for their taking away. He set the next day because he secretly hoped the frogs would disappear of themselves in the interval and save him from the bitter humiliation of submitting to the God of Israel. The frogs had come by the power of the living God, not by magic or by any power Moses and Aaron possessed, and God alone could remove them, for the signs and wonders wrought through Moses were done by the power of God and not by human influence or power. The magicians appeared by enchantments to bring up frogs as Moses and Aaron did, but they could not stay the plague or take the frogs away.
The rod becoming a serpent and the river turned to blood had not moved Pharaoh's hard heart but had only increased his hatred of Israel, because the work of the magicians led him to believe the miracles were done by magic. At the appointed hour the living plague was stopped while the dead effect remained, for the plague continued until the specified time and then the frogs died throughout all Egypt. God did not make them vanish to return to dust in a moment but let them die where they were, so their bodies were gathered into heaps lying in sight with their putrid bodies polluting the atmosphere and corrupting the air. This manner of removal gave abundant, undeniable evidence that the king and all Egypt could not pronounce the removal the result of sorcery or enchantment like the work of the magicians, proof their vain philosophy could not explain away that the plague and its removal were not magic but a judgment from the God of heaven.
The removal at Pharaoh's own word proves that there is none like unto the LORD God, who has no equal. The plague was a judgment against Egyptian idolatry, for the Nile revered as sacred became the source of a tormenting pollution, and by bringing the plague and removing it at Moses' word Jehovah showed that Egypt's idols could neither protect the people nor control the river and made His supremacy known. The work was done to convince Pharaoh that the great I AM sent Moses to command him to let Israel go that they might serve Him, and Moses in this work prefigured Christ's first advent to break Satan's power over the human family and deliver those made captives by him.
Satan, knowing Moses was chosen to break Israel's bondage and knowing Christ would come with mighty works and miracles to prove the Father sent Him, consulted with his angels to counterfeit God's work through the magicians in order to destroy the influence of God's work through Moses, harden Pharaoh against God's power, stagger the faith of Moses and Aaron, keep Israel from serving God, and destroy faith in Christ's miracles down through all ages. The magicians wrought not by their own science alone but by the power of their god the Devil, yet God's work was shown superior, for they could do only a few miracles, their rods became serpents but Aaron's rod swallowed theirs, they failed to produce the lice and were compelled to confess this is the finger of God, and God's controlling power cut off Satan's channel so they could not save themselves from the plagues and could not stand before Moses because of the boils. Pharaoh's asking for entreaty showed him somewhat humbled and beginning to know something about the God whom he professed to be wholly ignorant of.
Moses reminded the humbled king of his former haughty boasting and glorying over the works of his magicians, challenging him where that glorying was now and where was the power of the magicians to remove the plague. The Lord can answer a request as asked, making His unmatched power and glory known, which gives confidence that earnest prayer offered for God's glory will receive an answer even when it is delayed, so believers should keep praying and wait patiently. The frogs overspreading the land pictures the multitude of periodicals and books now overspreading the land that are commonplace, idle, enervating, unclean and degrading, and that intoxicate and ruin the mind and corrupt and destroy the soul.
