Ezekiel Sees the Living Creatures and Wheelsby KalebRosendahl

Ezekiel 1:15

Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces.

The verse shows one wheel resting on the earth beside the living creatures with their four faces, part of a vast living machinery of wheels within wheels beneath the cloudy chariot. Though the arrangement looks confusing and intricate, every wheel moves in its proper place in exactness and perfect harmony because it is moved and directed by infinite wisdom and the Spirit of God. The wheel-like complications stand for the tangled course of human events, yet the One enthroned above the cherubim guides the affairs of earth amid the strife of nations and overrules earthly rulers and evil powers for the good of His faithful people. Therefore human agents are to trust His providence, do their appointed part, and recognize Him as instructor rather than trying to control His work or leaving Him out, knowing they are not left to carry responsibility alone. At last those living wheels beneath the heavenly chariot will bear the saints upward to the holy city, the New Jerusalem, crying Holy as the wings and angels cry Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty while the redeemed shout Alleluia.

Wheels Beside Living Creatures

The one wheel stands upon the earth beside the living creatures with their four faces. It belongs to a complex arrangement in which humanlike figures are connected with the wheels. That arrangement involves cherubim, with a hand beneath their wings guiding the wheel beside them, and with wings on each side of the cloudy chariot above the living wheels.

The wheels are living wheels beneath a cloudy chariot. They are described as wheels within wheels. They are the machinery of earth and heaven, ordered workings that need many faces in order for the Hand beneath them to be seen.

The vision looks confusing, intricate and difficult to explain. What seems confused to human understanding moves with exactness, each wheel in its proper place and in perfect harmony with the whole and with the others.

God's Hand in Events

The wheel beside the living creatures is moved and directed by infinite wisdom, by God and by His Spirit. What looks intricate, confusing and difficult to explain is brought into perfect order, so that order comes from confusion. Each wheel moves in its proper place and works in perfect harmony with the others and with the whole.

The wheels are impelled and directed by heavenly beings under God's control, moving with exactness and harmony even when wheels within wheels seem confused. Myriads of glorified beings stand ready at His word to do His bidding. This shows how closely heaven is connected with earth, with heavenly messengers at work in the affairs of the world and the church under an infinite guiding hand.

The wheel-like complications represent the tangled course of human events, yet they remain under divine control. The One enthroned above the cherubim, with His hand beneath their wings, guides the affairs of the earth amid the strife and commotion of nations. He rules over coming events and the destiny of nations. The whole world is under His control, so He can overrule earthly rulers and the power and policy of evil men for the good of His faithful people. The machinery of earth and heaven needs many faces to reveal the Hand beneath the wheels bringing perfect order from confusion, proving the living and true God is necessary everywhere.

Trust and Final Triumph

The wheel beside the living creatures shows intricate machinery that looks difficult to explain, yet every wheel works in its proper place in perfect harmony because infinite wisdom directs it. God orders the work and prepares the way for it to be done through people, while human agents are to do their appointed part and trust His providence. They are not to try to control what belongs to Him, nor to leave Him out of their plans, but to recognize Him as instructor and fulfill each his duty.

Because heaven is so closely connected with events on earth, His guiding hand rules over coming events and the destiny of nations through heavenly messengers at work in the world and the church. His servants therefore need not carry responsibility as though they were left to themselves.

The living wheels are beneath a cloudy chariot with wings on each side, and as the chariot rolls upward they carry the saints upward to the holy city, the New Jerusalem. The wheel on the earth beside the living creatures with four faces belongs to this heavenly chariot imagery in which the chariot rises heavenward.

As the chariot rises the living wheels cry Holy, joining the moving wings crying Holy. The retinue of angels cries Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, while the redeemed shout Alleluia.
