Ezekiel 1:23

And under the firmament were their wings straight, the one toward the other: every one had two, which covered on this side, and every one had two, which covered on that side, their bodies.

Ezekiel 1:23 belongs to the divine symbol of the living creatures and the wheels, the wheels within wheels set forth in Ezekiel chapters 1 and 2. The vision was given beside the river Chebar during the exile, and the outstretched wings described in the verse are part of that revelation of heavenly beings moving the wheels beneath God's throne. To the finite eye the symbol looks intricate, inexplainable and difficult to explain, seeming like a mass of confusion in the wheels and their movements.

The appearances in the symbol include human-like forms connected with the wheels. What appears as confusion reveals a hand of infinite wisdom at work among the machinery. Out of that confusion perfect order is brought forth in response to that hand, with every wheel working in its true place and right order in perfect harmony with every other part of the machinery and the grand center.

The vision shows heaven closely connected with events on earth, with God's power ruling over earthly rulers and directing events in perfect harmony. It is evidence that the world has a ruler who cares for those loyal to Him, and that the Lord holds the course of coming events, the destiny of nations, and the concerns of His church in His care. The symbol holds a deep and important lesson for every worker for God and every one of His workmen, and should be studied with humility and earnest prayer.

The lesson is that every worker must be dependent upon the Holy Spirit to guide him as a faithful shepherd, and must look to God and trust in God and know that God is his instructor. No worker is to wait for voice and dictation from Battle Creek, and no living man is to fancy himself able to manage and dictate and control what belongs to the control of the great I AM.
