Ezekiel 1:24

And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings.

Ezekiel 1:24 belongs to a vision given to the exiled prophet beside the Chebar River. The living creatures and wheels in that vision are intricate and beyond human explanation, and to finite sight they look like a mass of confusion. Yet amid that intricate machinery a hand of infinite wisdom is at work.

In response to that hand, perfect order is brought out of confusion, with every wheel working in its right place in perfect harmony with every other part and the grand center. The vision reveals that the mighty God of Israel reigns above earthly rulers and that heavenly beings act under His direction. Heaven is closely connected with events on earth, and the Lord rules the world, holds the course of coming events in His hands, directs the destiny of nations and the concerns of His church, and cares for those who are loyal to Him. Through this rule He overrules evil for the good of His faithful people.

Every one of God's workmen should study the vision in chapters 1-2 with humility and earnest prayer because it holds a deep and important lesson. Applied to God's work, the verse means living human workers must stand at their post of duty with God as instructor, dependent on the Holy Spirit to guide them as faithful stewards, and no living person is to manage or dictate what belongs to the control of the great I AM.
