Ezekiel 11:17

Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even gather you from the people, and assemble you out of the countries where ye have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.

Ezekiel's word was spoken to the captives in Babylonia as a proclamation of God's rule over the nations. It promises that God Himself will gather Israel from the peoples and assemble them out of the countries where they have been scattered and dispersed, and will give them and bring them into the land of Israel. That gathering and its blessings belonged to literal Israel after the Babylonian captivity. They depended on turning from iniquity and on walking in God's statutes and keeping His ordinances, while those who persisted in idolatry would be judged. If Israel had met that condition, they could have received the promised fullness of the land in that dispensation.

Its fulfilment begins in this life in this age, not at the same time as the new earth. Whenever men turn to the Lord with all their heart God gathers them, giving the new heart and the new spirit to those who walk in His statutes and keep His ordinances. The gathering belongs with the promises fulfilled when Israel enters the land of the covenant of peace at the time God gives them a new spirit. It belongs to the gathering and deliverance of God's living people before the resurrection of the just. When that work is complete in the last generation, then God will take His children home.

The same promise assures isolated believers that the Shepherd is near through their trials and that they will be reunited with God's people at the end of their journey.
