Ezekiel 11:21

But as for them whose heart walketh after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations, I will recompense their way upon their own heads, saith the Lord GOD.

In its setting the verse belongs to the promise of one heart and a new spirit, in which the stony heart is taken out of the flesh and a heart of flesh is given, so that they shall be God's people and He shall be their God, that they may walk in His statutes and keep His ordinances and do them, with all detestable things and abominations taken away. It warns that those whose hearts walk after detestable things and abominations will have their own way recompensed upon their own heads, meaning those who refuse instruction and leave stumbling blocks in the way of others face God turning away from them. These words were set before Nicodemus to illustrate the work of grace upon the human heart and the nature of Christ's work on earth and in heaven.

The verse teaches that even a man as just and honorable as Nicodemus must experience a new birth through Jesus Christ as the only condition upon which he can be saved and can secure an entrance into the kingdom of God. Rigid precision in obeying the law entitles no one to enter the kingdom of heaven. The prophecies of Ezekiel 11 must receive careful, thoughtful study.
