Ezekiel 12:18

Son of man, eat thy bread with quaking, and drink thy water with trembling and with carefulness;

The verse stands within the first twenty chapters of Ezekiel. More narrowly it stands within Ezekiel 12:2-21. It was uttered by Ezekiel acting as God's mouthpiece among the captives in Babylonia by the river Chebar while Jeremiah was prophesying in Jerusalem.

It concerns literal Israel when carried to literal Babylon and held there for seventy years while the land enjoyed its sabbaths. It depicts the condition of that captivity as eating bread and drinking water in fear, trembling, and anxiety. In that condition Israel continually rebelled against its captors, having eyes to see but not seeing and ears to hear but not hearing, for they were a rebellious house.
