Ezekiel 13:16
To wit, the prophets of Israel which prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and which see visions of peace for her, and there is no peace, saith the Lord GOD. To wit, the prophets of Israel which prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and which see visions of peace for her, and there is no peace, saith the Lord GOD.
The verse describes the prophets of Israel who prophesy concerning Jerusalem and see visions of peace for her when there is no peace. The related image of coating a wall with unsuitable plaster means covering a real breach, wrongdoing, transgressions and mistakes with reassuring words and promises of peace, offering false reassurance instead of repentance, facing the wrong, and plain truth. Such a breach includes taking on human shoulders the responsibility to rebuild what God did not design to be rebuilt, with associates standing ready to plaster over that transgression and mistake.
Declaring peace when there is no peace gives false comfort and false security rather than truth and does harm. Flattering or sympathizing in ways that conceal wrongs, speaking smooth things, and weakening warnings against sin make the message of reproof ineffective, and those who follow such influence are in danger. This includes assuring a dying man of peace while his sins remained unconfessed, thereby concealing his danger instead of helping him face it, and indulgent attention that fails to address people's real condition.
The same image warns against presenting Bible truth unsoundly with a misleading, superficial and softened message. Instead there must be no softening or false assurance but a decided influence for righteousness and truth through wisely, faithfully and honestly handling Bible truth and presenting its importance, so that prejudice is broken down and souls are reached. For Christian physicians this means not confining talents and influence to one institution but making themselves known outside, giving light to all they can reach, meeting unbelievers with wise counsel and instruction, and presenting Bible truth on every possible occasion.
Those who plaster over wrong must put the plastering aside and get out of the way, humble the soul before God and seek the Lord's guidance together, let God work upon their hearts, and strive with all their might to bring the light of heaven upon their souls. Those responsible must be converted and humble their hearts before Him, and then God in mercy for His cause and His name's glory will pardon their transgressions and mistakes.
