Ezekiel 13:23

Therefore ye shall see no more vanity, nor divine divinations: for I will deliver my people out of your hand: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

The verse is spoken to the false prophetesses in their deceptive work of flattering sinners and ensnaring souls, and it promises that God will bring their vain visions and lying divinations to an end, rescue his people from their hand and power, and cause them to know that he is the LORD. It condemns all who claim to speak for God while delivering messages he never gave and leading others to trust a lie, a work that destroys souls even when the teachers themselves are deceived. Profession of faith in Jesus joined with claims to spiritual gifts while breaking God's law and teaching his commandments are abolished is such vain vision and lying divination, the religion of self-deceived workers of iniquity whom God will reject and from whose hand he will deliver his people. The wall daubed with untempered mortar is compromise of God's word by changing his law and breaking the everlasting covenant, seen especially in the human tradition that Sunday is God's Sabbath without any word from the Lord, a structure that cannot stand but will fall in the coming storm. The work of popular teachers and professed ministers who ease consciences in sin, preach peace and safety when danger is near, despise God's holy law and exalt a human code is the same seeing of vanity and divining of divinations, which God will stop through the thorough repair of the breach by holding up the law of God and the faith of the soon-coming Redeemer, rescuing his people and rendering justice to all before the Judgment tests every one's work.

Setting and Promise

The word is spoken to the false prophetesses, whose flattering and deceptive work is pictured in the sewing of pillows to armholes to ensnare souls. It stands as the Lord's condemnation of those who ease the consciences of people living in sin and who seduce others into sin. The chapter speaks of the same time and people as Isaiah 30:8-11 and Ezekiel 22, namely the professed people of God in the last days who are warned of their spiritual danger.

The promise is that vain visions shall be seen no more and lying divinations shall no longer be divined. God himself will put an end to the deceitful influence of the false prophets, stop their misleading visions, and expose their false claims. He will deliver His people out of their hand and rescue them from their power and control. Then they shall know that He is the LORD.

The hailstorm belonging to the setting of the passage is the great hailstorm accompanying the final plague.

Errors Exposed and Overthrown

To claim to speak for God while delivering visions and messages he did not give, to say the Lord has said what he has not said, and to prophesy lies in his name to make others trust a lie stands condemned. Such teaching destroys the souls of those who believe it even when the teachers are themselves deceived. Those who believe the lying words and join together in a practice with no scriptural authority but only the word of man are not excusable for failing to find out what truth is, and when God's presence shows them to be transgressors every one of them will be ashamed.

Profession of faith in Jesus joined with claims to the gifts of the Spirit while breaking God's law and teaching that the commandments are abolished is vain vision and lying divination, not from God. Iniquity is lawlessness, the opposite of keeping the commandments, so those who cry Lord, Lord and do many wonderful works in his name while disregarding the commandments are self-deceived workers of iniquity with no true vision and vain religion. God does not bestow his precious Spirit where antinomianism prevails, for the two cannot go together, and they will perish when told to depart, while God will deliver his people out of their hand.

The wall daubed with untempered mortar is compromise of the word of God by changing the law and breaking the everlasting covenant, boasting of large charity and tolerance while keeping sectarian prejudices of party division saying I am of Paul and I of Apollos. Their vanity and divining will be stopped, the incohesive structure will not stand, God will deliver his people out of their hand, and they shall know that he is the LORD. The work of popular teachers in the professed churches is that same seeing of vanity and divining of divinations, daubing the breach in the wall with untempered mortar through superficial and erroneous gospel work. The third angel's message must follow up that work and thoroughly repair the breach by pointing out the errors and dangers of the church and holding up the law of God and the faith of the soon-coming Redeemer, so vanity and divination are seen no more and God's people are delivered before the Judgment tests every one's work of what sort it is.

The work of professed ministers who ignore the basis of God's government, call his holy law Jewish, treat it with contempt, abolish the law Christ lived and died to honor and magnify, and demand human governments enact their amended code into civil law will be brought to an end. Their course brings law and government and religion into contempt and disrepute, sows the wind from pulpit and lobby and press, and ripens into the whirlwind of oncoming wars of anarchy. God will stop their misleading visions, rescue his people from their power, and render justice to all, so especially the poor are to trust in him, be patient unto the coming of the Lord, and establish their hearts, for the coming of the Lord draws nigh as the only sure hope when human schemes give no permanent help.

The chapter depicts a wall built on falsehood and weakly covered by others, which cannot stand and will fall, and its collapse is connected with the deliverance of God's people from the power of their oppressors. That image is applied to the false claim that Sunday is God's Sabbath as a human tradition that changes God's law and is upheld by its supporters, and to Sunday as a human institution with no word from the Lord to support it which the coming storm will expose and destroy. Unscriptural ideas about the Sabbath are rebuked, especially the inferred seventh-part-of-time theory used to avoid keeping the seventh day as commanded, which rests on human tradition and human law rather than God's plain command. Unsupported claims giving Sunday the sacredness and commands of the seventh-day Sabbath are fulfilled as false religious teaching that God will expose and end. God will also expose and end false prophecies that promise peace without truth, including the peace-and-safety cry proclaiming peace and assurance when danger is near, and will rescue his people from those who deceive them and make them know that he is the LORD.
