Ezekiel 16:6

And when I passed by thee, and saw thee polluted in thine own blood, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live; yea, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live.

The Live is God's own merciful word, spoken through Jesus Christ. He utters it as the great Physician to guilty sinners and to sick sufferers alike. Those in blood are guilty sinners helpless in their guilt, enshrouded in the deep angry darkness of sin and guilt with the pall of death hanging about the soul. It is addressed to the sinful but repentant soul, to the guilty sinner who looks to Christ, whose tears and repentance are accepted.

The word is spoken because a ransom has been found in Christ. At the cross the guilty sinner who looks to Christ receives pardon and may live. This belongs to the covenant of peace coming from the union of mercy and justice shown by the bow above the throne. The light of the knowledge of the glory of God revealed in the face of Jesus lifts that darkness, rolls back the cloud of vengeance, and transfigures the pall of death about the soul from threatening to glory, reflecting God's mercy.

To the sick sufferer the word means Christ in pity spares life so that the one spared may become acquainted with Him and believe on His name. Recovery from sickness is His work of pity and sparing. So a physician who trusts in his own skill and takes the praise for recovery forgets the One who gave the life.
