Ezekiel 17:12

Say now to the rebellious house, Know ye not what these things mean? tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon is come to Jerusalem, and hath taken the king thereof, and the princes thereof, and led them with him to Babylon;

The verse describes the king of Babylon coming to Jerusalem and taking its king and its princes with him to Babylon. The king so taken was Zedekiah. He was the last in David's line to sit on the throne of the Lord over God's earthly kingdom.

Zedekiah had been made subject to the king of Babylon. He had entered a solemn covenant before God to render loyal allegiance to that rule. He broke that covenant. Because of that breach of covenant the crown was removed. The earthly theocracy ended, to be no more until He come whose right it is.

The kingdom was made subject to Babylon. It was then to be overturned successively through Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome until Christ. To Christ God will give the throne of His father David to reign forever.
