Ezekiel 17:16
As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely in the place where the king dwelleth that made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he brake, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die. As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely in the place where the king dwelleth that made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he brake, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die.
The king is Zedekiah, the last king in David's line upon the throne of the Lord, whom Nebuchadnezzar had made king and made subject to Babylon. The oath he despised and the covenant he broke was a solemn oath of allegiance to Nebuchadnezzar, taken in the name of the Lord God of Israel, binding him before God to render loyal allegiance. To despise that oath and break that covenant was to betray every sacred trust toward the prophets, toward his benefactor, and toward God. In the vanity of his own wisdom he rebelled after pledging himself, sending ambassadors into Egypt for horses and many people. Yet Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company would not help him in the war.
Because he broke his oath and covenant after giving his hand and doing all these things, he would not prosper, escape, or be delivered. Surely he would die in the midst of Babylon, in the place where Nebuchadnezzar dwelt who had made him king. Because of this breach God removed the diadem and took off the crown, overturning the kingdom. The throne of the Lord was left vacant from this world until the coming of Him whose right it is, Jesus, to whom God will give the throne of his father David to reign forever.
