Ezekiel 17:18

Seeing he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, when, lo, he had given his hand, and hath done all these things, he shall not escape.

The one who will not escape is Zedekiah, the last king of Judah, the last of David's line to sit on the throne of the Lord over God's earthly kingdom. He had been placed on the throne by Nebuchadnezzar and made subject to the king of Babylon, entering before God into a solemn covenant to render loyal allegiance to him. That oath was sworn in the name of the Lord God of Israel, so that he owed his overlord both gratitude and loyalty.

He despised that oath by breaking the covenant when he forsook the counsels of God given through the prophets. He rebelled against the prophets, against his benefactor, and against his God, sending his ambassadors into Egypt to seek horses and many people and troops. Having pledged himself by giving his hand, he basely betrayed every sacred trust.

Therefore he would not prosper or escape for doing all these things. He would die in Babylon, in the very place where the king dwelt who had made him king. Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company would not help him in the war.

For this breach he is addressed by God as a profane wicked prince whose day has come. The diadem is to be removed and the crown taken off, overturning the kingdom so that it shall be no more. That overturning unfolds in stages: while then subject to Babylon, the kingdom is overturned a first time by Medo-Persia, a second time by Greece, and a third time by Rome, after which it remains vacant.

It will remain no more until the coming of Him whose right it is, Jesus, to whom God will give the throne of His father David to reign forever. Thus the throne of the Lord has been removed from this world until the end of this world and the beginning of the world to come.
