Ezekiel 17:3
And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; A great eagle with great wings, longwinged, full of feathers, which had divers colours, came unto Lebanon, and took the highest branch of the cedar: And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; A great eagle with great wings, longwinged, full of feathers, which had divers colours, came unto Lebanon, and took the highest branch of the cedar:
The riddle of the great eagle belongs to a message concerning Zedekiah, the wicked and profane prince of Israel who stood in the line of David. It identifies him as the last ruler to wear the diadem and crown of that Davidic kingship before judgment fell. That kingship was not merely national but was the throne of the Lord over God's earthly kingdom.
Zedekiah had entered into a solemn covenant made before God, binding himself to render loyal allegiance to the king of Babylon. He then broke that covenant, violating both his oath to the earthly conqueror and his oath to God. Because he broke the covenant, God removed the diadem and crown from him and overturned the throne of David. The kingdom was thereby subjected to Babylon, losing its independence and its theocratic standing. From that overturning it was left to pass under successive world powers, to be overturned again and again until He come whose right it is.
