Ezekiel 17:5

He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful field; he placed it by great waters, and set it as a willow tree.

The parable surrounding this verse concerns Zedekiah being placed in subjection to the king of Babylon under a solemn covenant made before God that bound him to render loyal allegiance. That covenant required faithfulness to Babylon as a divinely recognized obligation, not merely a political arrangement. Zedekiah violated that covenant, and because of that breach God pronounced judgment for the removal of the diadem and the crown from him.

In this way the verse marks the taking away of the earthly kingdom of God as administered under the line of David and its reduction to subjection under Babylon. That kingdom was to be overturned three times through successive world powers, and thereafter to exist no more until the coming of Him whose right it is. At the end of this world it will be given to Jesus Christ as heir of the throne of David.
